Original RainX was Methanol, V2 is Isopropanol. V1 scatters any rain into exploded stars of smaller beads, easily winded away at low speeds. V2 just repels water from glass, leaving huge blobs of rain at low to medium speeds. V1 is great if your wipers fail.

Your video answered the questions I had about these products. Maybe it would be best to apply the original and use the 2 in 1 for general window cleaning afterwards instead of using just a glass cleaner.

For those that are curious. The "Original" is also available in a spray version. It is superior to the 2 in 1 clean and repel (I did my own test in small scale using photo frame glass), which isn't surprising since it is only doing one thing instead of 2. What I would suggest is: If you have a proper cleaner like "CARPRO ERASER - OIL & RESIDUE REMOVER" than buy the Rain X repel, NOT the "Clean and repel" Using the "Eraser" to clean and prepare the surface for the Rain X Original treatment. If you don't have a product like this for whatever reason (you don't really do waxing yourself etc), than buy the "Clean and repel", while the water repellency is to a degree noticeably different. It is still VERY GOOD. BUT what you need to remember is that neither (as far as I'm aware) can be used on the inside of the car. So you need to have a separate glass cleaner for the inside (which MAY leave residue that inhibits Rain X original from bonding to the surface of the glass). So if you are just interested in a quick OUTSIDE GLASS clean with pretty good repellency than go with the 2 in 1 "clean and repel" If you are a bit more into car detailing than I would recommend going with the "Original" BUT make sure that neither come into contact with the paint of your car, so spray on to an applicator first (ensure that nothing drips on to the paint of your car) And if it does wash the area immediately.

Protip dood: Use the 2-in-1 to remove the haze of the Original. It works better and makes a super crystal clean window. Invisible Glass works better on the inside and the side windows, but keep in mind you MUST clean the window first. Rain-X is for front, rear, and mirrors.

i find the best combination is to apply the original rain-x water repellent directly on the windshield, and use the 2 in 1 as your windshield washer fluid. altho, i'm not sure if the 2 in 1 won't eventually clog up your washer fluid sprinklers... i've been doing this for the past 2 years and had no issues and because i'm using the 2 in 1 as my washer fluid, the rain-x original windshield coating lasts significantly longer (5-6 months instead of 3 months)

Rain-X makes a washer solvent with repellent in it, but it's rumored to fould the sensor in your reservoir after a while.

@@AcmeRacing interesting enough i never experienced any problem caused by the 2 in 1 to my washer fluid reservoir, however i did notice that if you don't use your washer fluid for a long while and just let it sit, some solids start forming in it - which may potentially clog the pump - for cars with a filter at the reservoir filling hole that isn't much of a problem as long as you are using the washer fluid on a more or less daily /weekly basis. but for people which don't have that sort of filter in their washer fluid reservoir filling hole that may cause some trouble. i'm not sure which cars have or don't have this sort of a filter, but my Audi A3 and A6 had one and my brand new VW Tiguan has one as well, so i guess all VAG cars have this sort of filter. i noticed these solids forming in the 2-1 mix in my refill windshield washer container that i prepare in advance and stock in my garage they usually start forming around 2-3 months after the fluid is standing unused.

I have used Rain-X on all my cars since 1979. I have never seen a product that works better. The new 2-in1 is sold here in the UK as a "glass cleaner" that also "adds Rain-X", so I use it before adding a refresher dose of Rain-X. It's quite expensive, so I use a 3" square of cloth-faced sponge to apply it, as that is far less wasteful.

The "original" Rain X I used in 1994 was hard as hell to get off windshields and would leave a 'filmy' residue if not buffed off completely. It was as dense - and hard to get off - as waxing a car in 1965 was. The replacement (which is the Rain X they refer to as "original") and came out around 2003 or so, was easier to apply/remove, but not nearly as effective as the original Rain X (1994) was/is.

In some reviews of rain x and other water repellents shows perfect in water repelling during day time but during night while raining if we use wiper then the vision will not be perfectly clear as there seems like a waxy layer on top of the glass.Please share your experience after applying rain repellent

I LOVE not having to use wipers on the highway while its raining after applying the original Rain X....however, I frickin HATEEEEEE the haziness that forms, then it feels like no matter how hard I try to wipe off with new paper towels or separate clean microfiber towels, my arm wants to fall off as I feel like I always keep seeing the haziness. That's the only annoying AF part.

Great question! The Original rain-x would need to be applied first as it needs a bare surface to work properly. Once that is applied, you could look to other products such as a wax or sealant for additional protection and longevity.

Hope someone can answer this, if I use original water repellent and then use a standard car glass cleaner when windows are dirty. Will this reduce the effect of the water repellent or is it best to use the 2 in 1 cleaner?

Anything you use instead of rainx or another water repellent product will wear away some of the rain x coating. It would be best to use rain x 2 in 1 cleaner or another water repellant cleaner like armor all ceramic spray cleaner (idk what the actual name is). Even using the cleaner with repellent in it will decrease the effects of rain x I believe, because it is less concentrated that the original rain x formula (I’m just guessing). Hope this helps.

The 2-in-1 will clean, but the harder it has to work to clean, the less it’s able to protect. For regular Rain-x, definitely needs to be pristine clean. For the 2-in-1, it’s ok if it’s a little dirty

UPDATE: Sorry for the late update everyone. For the last two years the 2-in-1 has met my standards and I keep buying it. My brother also keeps buying it. You will be happy with the 2-in-1. We honestly can’t tell a difference. We have never tested durability because we keep our trucks meticulously cleaned… Just go for the 2-in-1. Rain X is not gonna put their name on a product that doesn’t work. Sorry again for the late reply

The rain x original is tricky to apply. Your car windows must be clean and you have to work fast or the streaks will stay i also had the problem with the original but the 2 in 1 does not streak only if your towels are dirty or wet

You have to buff it off with a clean towel or microfiber or paper towel or something. Like apply it with one towel, then get another clean one to buff it away. If you buff it away with a clean towel enough it will become clear.
