This is my Rainbow D4c SE PE Canister Vacuum (which I believe to be from the mid to late 90s) that I bought piece by piece on eBay after dreaming of having one to have alongside my D4c ( • Rainbow D4c (D4) Canis... ), and my regular SE ( • Rainbow D4c SE (Specia... ). The D4 was a major upgrade over the D3 specifically for its motor design, which was revised to the suction doesn't flow through the motor, which originally created a cooling effect for the motor of the D3 but now with this design to solve that, an impeller fan was added on the opposite side of the motor which pulls air from the top to keep the motor cool, while the suction fans were moved to the the lower side of the motor by the water separator and exhausts below the motor unit, which solves the issue when the unit is tipped on its side and can let water in by mistake. The SE PE was basically one of Rainbow's biggest upgrade to the late D4 style units long before the E series came into existence, and that was mostly to due with the introduction of the PN2 power brush, which greatly increased cleaning performance since it had much more aggressive agitation compared to its predecessor. These Rainbows are a unique vacuum since they use water as a filter, and the way they get their suction is by having suction flow through the water separator (which keeps water from entering the motor) and into the motor, and all the suction flows downwards into the water basin and all the dirt gets trapped in the water and the rest of the air flows through the separator. It has all of the attachments including the separate non-electric hose. It features a 9.5 amp, 3 stage motor with clean air design, and has a 2.5 amp power nozzle motor (combined it has around 12 amps). The suction and airflow are pretty good on this machine and the agitation is pretty fantastic (in fact it's the most powerful I've ever experienced with a canister). The only thing I have to complain about this machine, although I love the performance, it's inconvenient because the casters on the wheel caddy get stiff occasionally and don't like to swivel completely, so the motor isn't very maneuverable. Overall, I really love this vacuum, and I recommend any of these D series Rainbows.
