I try to keep music that isn't mine on the opl3music channel, so that's why there are two channels. The CT2290 is my favorite based on sound, yes. Allegedly it has some trouble with sampled sounds in DOS games, but I don't game on it so I wouldn't know. The reason I like the CT1747 chip for OPL3 music is because it is a little bit brighter than a YMF262, but it also has a bit of OPL2 flair.

If you play it backwards, it's about a factory that siphons rainbows out of the sky to make ponies. In their greed, the corporation built enormous siphons to ingest rainbows. They also built huge weather control towers which seed the clouds with nanocrystals in order to produce thunderstorms, so that more rainbows would be created. This led to massive flooding all over the earth. People waged war over the few remaining patches of land. Millions died. However, that was the least of Earth's problems. The massive number of ponies generated by the reverse-rainbow factory sent earth's biodiversity spiraling out of control. Soon earth was deforested entirely as ponies consumed the last remaining plant matter. And then... they turned on one another...

This is sick as Tartarus...you have no idea how long I've been looking for OPL3 dubstep-ish tunes. I hate the fanfic this song was based on (because I love Rainbow Dash and don't like her portrayed as a sadistic villain) but damn, is this a fine tune. I actually have Adlib Tracker II as well (for DOSbox,) but I haven't done much of anything on it because the interface is confusing to me, and also because while I do compose music using a tracker, I prefer it if my end result is a module file which can be used by the various silly little indie game projects I make in my spare time. Hence the reason I compose in OpenMPT and pretty much only use the Impulse Tracker format nowadays...the mod/s3m/xm/it formats have been supported for years and are still supported by even the latest version of Unity that I use. However, one thing I've always wanted to use Adlib Tracker for is creating and rendering the OPL3 instrument samples for use with my OpenMPT modules. I've done it before with VOPM in FL Studio, but that plugin is sorta unstable. So I think what I might do is compose the song partially in Adlib Tracker and partially in OpenMPT. Well of course, I could always compose *everything* in Adlib Tracker and simply render it as an ogg or mp3 for my game, but ever since I got into game development ten years ago I've had this little OCD aversion to using prerendered music in retro-style indie games. I think it's mostly because almost games back in the 80s and early 90s used music formats which played back in realtime, as well as playing a few bad indie game attempts at being "old-school" in the past where the music was generic and boring techno and all the graphics looked conspicuously 2000s, not "old-school" at all. Sorry for long-ass reply 0_o
@OPL3music10 жыл бұрын
Actually i agree with you! I would love to see module files used instead of sampled recordings in modern games. Unfortunately i don't know of any standardized software synth engines or FM chips that could be used without people arguing over which one is best and preventing it from hitting the market. This file is actually included in the AT2 sample files if you want to play with it. There are many others from many other good artists as well. Right now it is under very active development. Yeah some people find the interface confusing but I'm not sure how....... I personally love the interface. *shrug*
@DashsChannel10 жыл бұрын
OPL3music Wow, glad you agree, and that I'm not just irrational and OCD about my aversion to prerendered music in 2D or otherwise retro games. I'm just scared to ask a question about how to get the most out of my music modules in my games on the Unity forums, for fear I'll get a ton of "GET WITH THE TIMES" or "NOBODY USES MODS ANYM0AR YOU GOTTA ADAPT AND USE OGGS INSTEAD BUDDY" comments. Yeah, I think nowadays the only way to get authentic FM synth into your game is to use a dedicated hardware emulator as a plug-in or some sort of add-on to whatever game engine you are using. I know ZDoom (a popular Doom source port, AKA the one I use the most for my gaming and modding needs) has a built-in software emulator for OPL3-compatible sound cards, but such measures are generally really, really rare. And since I'm a poor college kid who currently just makes games for fun and has close to zero budget for them, I'll just stick with rendering OPL3 samples and using them in more widely-supported module files. Dude, that is *amazing* that this tune comes bundled with Adlib Tracker II. And it was there all along, ever since I downloaded the latest version of the tracker almost a whole year ago. I guess I'm not the only brony who loves retro computer music. I used to think MLP was so inherently "modern" and unlike anything from the 80s or 90s (because well, it isn't) that fans would never even consider associating the ponies with old computers. But since many of us were born/grew up in the 90s and the late-80s it makes perfect sense now that I think of it. Damn, now I wanna compose something in Adlib Tracker, even if just to put on my KZbin channel :3
@OPL3music10 жыл бұрын
Dude, I would be happy to help you with AT2. I don't have much time to spare, but i can certainly offer advice and some assistance. It's quite powerful. The reason i use OGG files is because they can have an arbitrary sample rate, they loop seamlessly, and the file size is only slightly larger than an MP3. MP3 cannot have an arbitrary sample rate and is incapable of a seamless loop (By design). Sadly, sampled music is here to stay. I love analog synthesizers and effects, and the only feasible way to incorporate them is with sampled music. But i do miss FM. I also dislike software synthesizers, but even a software FM synthesizer is better than nothing. Subz3ro loves OPL3 music - he'll include just about anything with AT2. His dedication and openness are what drives this small community. I was flattered to see my own module in the sample tracks. Yeah. Lots of 90s kids in the MLP fandom. Gotta love it! Another good one is CdiFan237, although he left KZbin when G+ moved in. Shame. I'm glad you find the track inspirational. If you are interested in more, check out the MadBrain modules, they use 4op mode and macros to make insane sounds. The Encore modules are pretty good too. I haven't had time to listen to most of the samples, so I'm sure there's many more I've missed. If you need any help with AT2, i would be delighted to assist. There is also a Facebook group named after the tracker, if you're interested in connecting with the community.
@DashsChannel10 жыл бұрын
OPL3music Hey man, sorry for the super-late reply, but sure, I'd love to know how to use AT2. I hear so many awesome tunes composed in it and I'd love to make my own. Again I never got much of *any* experience with DOS or non-GU interfaces until just in the past 4 or 5 years with DOSbox, mostly with help from my roommate who is a total whiz at both retro hardware _and_ software. But funny thing is, on a slightly different note I picked up a different FM tracker a few days ago called VGM Music Maker, which is designed to emulate the Sega Genesis's YM2612 sound chip, and exports as *VGM (the file format used by the Genesis and a few other arcade and home platforms as music files) so it can be played by any program that emulates the Genesis/Megadrive hardware, or perhaps a real Genesis/Megadrive somehow. However, while it does support the console's four-voice PSG and the option to play PCM samples (if you'll notice, most Genesis music had FM synth for the actual melody, but the drums were actual PCM drum samples, albeit with a very low bit depth and sampling rate,) it has far fewer FM channels than Adlib Tracker (only six instead of eighteen.) Probably because the YM2612 hardware is older and less advanced than the SB16/OPL3 hardware. But thanks to VGM Maker I am slowly actually understanding the mechanics of FM synthesis...I have the concept of envelopes pretty close to down pat. I've successfully recreated the distortion guitar instrument from Thunder Force IV...though for the power chords I had the original ripped Y12 instrument file open in TFM Maker and just copied the parameters, but the palm mute was created completely from scratch after hours of tweaking, and it sounds actually pretty good. Also, I don't mind sampled music for pretty much all applications except retro 2D/early 3D games. But for KZbin videos, listening on an iPod, or as the musical score for modern 3D games, prerendered music is where it's at. And yes, OGG is a great format. I wish more platforms would support it.

Oooh yeah Genesis has far far fewer channels. The waveforms are different, too. The OPL3 has a square wave and a logarithmic sawtooth, and you can get some *crazy* results with them. How do you even use the FM OPL3/OPL4? Whatever I try to make sounds like utter shit.
@NAB62210 жыл бұрын
Oh, I spend hours making sounds. And I love making as many new sounds as possible for each track. There are a few sounds that I feel are legendary enough to carry over from track to track, but most of the time all of the sounds are new. It takes time, but it can be very fun. I'll just write an essay below, hopefully it can help. It's actually a bit difficult to make good sounds at first. There are a few things that might help. First off, get to know the sound and shape of each of your waveforms. It's the most important part. Some waveforms, like the standard sine wave, have values above and below the 0 point. This means that when you use it as a modulator, you will have harmonics above and below the carrier wave's frequency. ABS-sine, which is the mathematical absolute value of a sine wave, has only positive values - so it will only create high harmonics. Another thing to consider is the EPO waveforms. EPO means the oscillator will oscillate on Even Periods Only. So, for instance, Sine (EPO) would mean you get no sound for the first oscillation, and a sound for the second oscillation. When you use an EPO waveform as a modulator, it allows the carrier wave's natural harmonics to come through, alongside the harmonics it generates. You can get some very thick sounds with it. The BNNNZZZZGH bass sound in this video is made using a half sine carrier wave and an ABS-Sine EPO modulator. The sawtooth and square wave are verrrry special. Both of them are useless in any normal FM sound. However, the sawtooth (Well, it's more of a logarithmic sawtooth) is actually extremely useful in making grungy sounds - try using it as a modulator wave, with a tiny bit of volume. I've also gotten some chorusing sounds using the square wave. Now, since FM is all about playing with carrier/modulator combinations until you find something harmonic, you can use ADSR to test the harmonics of a certain combination with just one go. Set your carrier to a wave you think would sound nice and set it's attack to F. Then, set your modulator to any of the waveforms, and set it's attack to 1, with the volume at maximum. Then play a note. You should hear a complete sweep of the sounds available from that combination. If you like a sound, you can easily find it by adjusting the modulator volume. If you don't like it, you can keep playing with the waveforms and multipliers. The biggest, awesomest feature of this chip: feedback. I have no idea how it works mathematically, but basically, if you use the feedback setting on a low note, you get a snappy bright sound. If you use it on a high note, you get a bright screeching sound. And if you turn the feedback and modulator volume all the way up, you get static. Most people use the static for drums and cymbals. The low snappy sound is a trademark OPL bass sound. Lastly, don't be afraid to layer several 2op instruments! The actual bass sound in this video is on track 4, the grungy compliment sound is on track 3, and there's a quiet complimentary sound on tracks 1 & 2 throughout the entire track. Don't be afraid to get wasteful! Hope some of my rambling helped.......I should make a video..................
@smilingme12310 жыл бұрын
NAB622 Oh, I know how FM works in general. It's just that the interface of Adlib is so hard for me to work with. :/ But that's just me. I didn't know about the EPO settings... I'll take a look at that later. Wait, the saw in OPL3 is logarithmic? Interesting... That's really smart about the attack trick. Didn't think of that. Feedback is when a modulator modifies itself. Yes, it kicks ass. Yeah, from my experience with Genesis and a lot of 4-op instruments just being two 2-op's layered together, I can see why this would work really well :)
@NAB62210 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Yamaha synths in general seem to be plagued with bad interfaces. I'll be honest, though, I like Adlib Tracker. Once you get a handle on what you're doing it's pretty easy to use. There's only two EPO waveforms - Sine and ABS-sine. Both are quite useful. Yeah, the sawtooth waveform on the OPL3 is logarithmic, hence why it's sound has very little body: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19603700/OPL3%20Sawtooth%20Wave.png Some of the other waveforms have some very strange quirks, too. In particular, the square wave is hardly a square. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19603700/OPL3%20Square%20Wave.png It's worth checking them out close up. Some of them change shape slightly depending on the frequency played. My favorite waveform by far is the pulse-sine (quarter sine). Feedback is the modulator modifying itself? Hmmmmmm. I'll have to play with that. Wish I had an oscilloscope, it'd be fun to see it in action. By the way, if you're interested in poking through this track to get ideas, it's included in the Adlib Tracker sample files as RBFACTRY.a2m. Subz3ro decided to flatter me.......

NAB622 I can't wrap my head around the interface. So confusing! Yeah, I can see why they would be useful. I just realized that I've been using them the whole time in Deflemask :P ... Well, the squares in all Yamaha chips are like this, if I remember correctly. They do that? Well, I guess there's quirks in using a soundchip, but these quirks are what makes a soundchip itself, I suppose. It is. Famitracker (VRC7) and Deflemask (Genesis/YMU729) are two FM trackers that have oscilloscopes. It looks just as nice as it sounds. Great job on making it into the samples, by the way!

Most (all?) AWE64 cards had emulated OPL3 (creative's CQM synthesis) which sounded quite bad, or at least very different from the real thing. 96 MB of RAM might be a bad idea; many motherboards (e.g. intel 430TX chipset) only caches 64 MB of RAM properly. More than 64 MB of RAM can lead to stutter and a performance loss of about 10-20%.

@NAB62210 жыл бұрын
Well actually, there's a few possibilities. The obvious first impulse people have is to make a separate recording with software and mix it with the original track, but I utterly despise software. So, the first possibility is, since this is a Sound Blaster 16, it could easily play a sampled sound. Second, the ever-elusive OPL4 chip actually has some kind of sample based synthesis, but I have no idea what it's capable of. It might be able to do speech samples. Third, there's a very rare CSP chip for Sound Blaster 16 cards that can actually synthesize it's own speech. It's a bit primitive, but it would actually sound good with this track. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH-TZp2IlLWrjZI I actually obtained a CSP chip as well as an AWE32 with it's own CSP chip, so I might try it at a later date but I certainly don't have time right now.

opl4 from what I saw is just an opl3 synth + wavetable, it's not bad, I saw some examples, but they're not so different from a single wavetable board... Hmm cant the voice be "emulated"? like at the end it's just a wave frequency on both cases, so if playing a note very fast couldn't it make a similar sound to that voice? The better example for me would be the wav players for pc speaker, like this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6XaYmOJmtp2pdU But I don't know if it would be abble to make the same result, making notes to sound like that (maybe, some really fast notes?)

+ibm5155 Somehow I didn't get notified of your reply. That's neat, I've never heard a PC speaker playing sampled sounds, although I figured it was possible. I wonder what that would sound like for the lyrics........I don't suspect it would be very good, though. I intend to experiment with Adlib Tracker's macros for synthesized speech eventually, but it won't be easy....definitely will take a while.

its pure legit real deal so fuck those software emulated shit.

we don't need no shitty software emulated stuff. because some emulators might lag too much and shit.

For hardware, you'll need an oldschool DOS or Windows 95/98 PC, equipped with a Sound Blaster 16. And for software, you'll need Adlib Tracker II. The synthesizer chip is a Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 chip, found mostly on the classic Sound Blaster 16. There are plenty of variants to choose from as well. This video uses a variant I particularly like called the CT1747. If you want to try Adlib Tracker without spending money on the hardware, you can get the SDL version from www.adlibtracker.net to try out. OxygenStar has a video tutorial that gives the basics: Adlib Tracker II Tutorial: The Basics Also, if you like this track, you'll probably like Bring The Pain, from OxygenStar's album, Sassy wisdom. www.planetzaxxon.com/zip/OxygenStar-sassywisdom.zip Hope that helps!

Actually, this would work on a Soundblaster Pro 2 because you don't seem to be using any samples at all. Although it'd play at a lower sample rate of 22050hz (not 32000hz for the YMF262 or 44100hz for the YMF289, an embedded version of the latter) and would probably be mono.
