I got pretty obsessed with this song and I m pretty sure the guitar solo is itself a melodic image of the tower being build : It starts low (in pitch) the build up is really long, it goes higher and higher right to the final moment where the guitar stops and "stand still" (time s standing still). This moment IS the moment the wizzard jumps, we can only hear the guitar, all other instruments shuts (no sound as he falls) and the riff finally get back (the wizzard hits the ground) I Can totally imagine the whole story pictured during the whole guitar part.... But maybe i m juste crash 😁😁

It's a bittersweet feeling to be sure, Dio and too many others now (recently added to the list were Florian Schneider from Kraftwerk a couple of weeks ago and Little Richard today). What a time to be alive, though, when the performances (not just the compositions) of these fantastic musicians can live on for new fans to discover. I like that, it's kind of comforting to me.

This is in my top 5 albums, ever. I remember reading an interview with Ronnie James Dio about this song; its a group of slaves serving a wizard, who believes he can fly. They build him a tower, which he ascends, and when he jumps off, he falls to his death. The end of the song is about the slaves not knowing what do to, and having conflicted feelings about what to do next. I enjoyed watching you enjoy one of my favs! Ronnie James Dio, RIP.

And then they see a rainbow and their thinking clears and they realize they are free, and they go home. The following song A Light in the Dark continued the story. After going home they spent their lives regretting wasting their lives in search of somebody elses dream.
@RedDawnRocker
@RedDawnRocker 4 жыл бұрын
@@chuckhughes4899 All these years and I'm still not sure about the ending. "My eyes are bleeding ... take me home. I'm coming home" sounds more in line with follower suicide than just literally picking up and going home. The lyrics in the later songs sound like lost souls in purgatory than anything. With Dio's views on religion, how heaven and hell aren't separate realms but Earth itself and how both live in all of us; It seems very possible the lines could allude to souls living eternally in purgatory for following a false Messiah or God.

This was amazing! One of my all time favorite songs by one of my all time favorite bands. If you liked this, please please PLEASE react to Uriah Heep-Wizard. Such an incredible song. The voice on this dude is other worldly. Going back to Ronnie James Dio, I was fortunate enough to have met him not long before his passing. I told him that it was such an honor to meet him and that after all of the years of him singing that he still delivered with such power in his voice. He told me (in classic Dio style) “Without me, you will carry on. Without you, I am nothing.” I am actually fighting back tears as I write this. Those words hit me like a truck. Little did I know at the time that just a few short months later he would be gone. But I do not cry because he is gone. I smile because he existed. Because he was a gentle loving soul. And because I got to spend just a few moments in his presence.

That "wizard" can be ANYbody in society that we hold up on a pedestal. A politician, a priest, a rock star or rapper, a celebrity or anybody that claims to have all the answers. Beware of anybody that want's to lead us to a "star" or "promised land" of any kind. The moral of the story? Don't "follow" anybody or hold people with extremely high regard. Nobody is holy. They will all fail and you will be let down eventually if you do this. Great video!!

Rainbow/Dio!!!! The best voice in rock, never to be repeated. I don't always remember the first time I've heard some of the songs you react to... but your joy and enthusiasm makes me happy because I know those feelings were there when I first heard them too! You're a great reminder of music I used to obsessively listen to at a young/foundational. Thanks for giving me rediscovery. Please keep on posting videos. I love your channel. Thank you and much love Jamel!

Anything with Ronnie James Dio on vocals is worth a listen. Whether he's with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, or his own band DIO. He was a tiny man with the worlds biggest voice. Now you know why Jack Black was praying to him.

From Wikipedia: The song has been called a "morality tale",and its lyrics are written from the standpoint of a "slave in Egyptian times", according to lyricist Ronnie James Dio. They relate the story of the Wizard, an astronomer become "obsessed with the idea of flying", who enslaves a vast army of people to build him a tower from which he can take off and fly. The people hope for the day when their misery comes to an end, building the tower in harsh conditions ("In the heat and rain, with whips and chains; / to see him fly, so many died"). In the end, the wizard climbs to the top of the tower but, instead of flying, falls down and dies: "no sound as he falls instead of rising. / Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand". The next song, "A Light in the Black", continues the story of the people who have lost all purpose after the Wizard's death "until they see the Light in the Dark", according to Dio
