Cool to see that the dash structure didn't change too much between the 90s and then. That's exactly how you would take out the dash in my Blazer. It also had a failing dash dimmer 🙃

That tuning knob may have a set screw in it. You might have been covering it with one of your phalanges. 😁 GM must have had a summer student design that thing. A set of stacked potentiometers & switches would have been better, but probably $.12 over budget for the vehicle.

I had a 97 GMC Yukon with a similar headlight switch...my failure mode was the shaft snapping: A 1/16th inch plastic bit. I got pretty good at swapping switches

About the blue light cover. My old Honda Ridgeline was notorious for the small dash backlights burning out. I found that they were all the same bulb and just had little colored rubber covers on them.

FaderLube (from DeOxit) can sometimes restore a brightness potentiometer like that. Some dielectric (bulb) grease on the rotary switch contacts and PCB could help too.

it is a good location as long as you put a guard in place to stop the wash from the wheels reaching them. They dont seem to hang down as much as yours.

On the light dimming switch, try a spray of TV tuner cleaner or similar. There was a tsb couple years ago dirt/dust accumulation. Just a thought
