Dear Ray, Long time listener, first time caller. As a former owner of a PT Cruiser (NA, not the Turbski) that did their own maintenance, the first thing you do when beginning anything on one of those is to remove the grill and radiator support (along with that weather stripping). The last thing to do is to reinstall said components. It saves you from having to say, "There is no room!" so many times. 🤣 Also. having replaced that same torque mount...No one sells the correct part. I had to drill out mine as well after trying 3 different brands I believe.

Oh Ray I really feel your pain here. A few weeks ago I had to replace a transmission in my friend's 04 pt, 2.4 turbo and I was cussing the whole way. Like you said in this video, I literally had every tool in my box out. It was not fun and took 2 days,10 hours first day alone. I don't have a lift, and I am not certified, I just do repairs mostly for family. I am mostly self taught but my father and step father helped a lot too, and still have a lot to learn. I have yet to do a head gasket. That is my last major experience needed. Well still have to learn more about electrical diag, but I'm getting their. Keep up the awesome videos man. Between you and SMA, I learn a lot. Been a sub to you for about 2 years now. I'll keep watching as long as you keep posting. Thanks for your uploads and passing on your love of vehicle repair.

It made my day knowing that Ray noted, "That's generally why we don't like to use customer-supplied parts" as he was given odd paper gaskets where recessed seals are required!😆This is why it's always so important to have accurate data on the vehicle yr/mk/mdl as well as reference numbers for parts so that you know you're getting a properly fitted part (including fluids) even as they're sometimes "updated" but if you have the original part#, usually it'll cross-reference to the newer part with "replaces part#..."

I've been patiently waiting for the next video to come out. Your work bench reminds me of my work benches over the years. I had a radio repair shop for 14 years and customers would come in and out of the repair portion. Sometimes It was down right embarrassing to have to shove stuff precariously off to the side in order to put their equipment on the bench. As a one man technician shop, I always had multiple jobs going on. I tried to keep shelves in order to put my work back up while it waited for parts or to be worked on again, but my tools and test equipment would always be strewn across my bench. When I took a down day and organized them all, it sure felt good, but didn't last too long. I tried to get people that I hired from time to time to organize it for me, but that didn't work out. I guess my suggestion is to knock off the work an hour earlier and just clean and organize the bench and shop. It seems like there never is the time and customers, family and making money come first, but keeping an organized bench will have a good effect on you personally and actually help speed things up. Being retired, if I was close by, I would volunteer my time to help organize and clean up behind you. I know some may not like this comment, but I would really hate to see you burn yourself out. I can't imagine how you do everything that you presently do. You are the top KZbinr in my opinion.

It's worth noting that wasn't a bad customer supplied motor mount, but rather someone had changed that motor mount before, fucked it up, and had to drill and tap the hole to a bigger one and a bigger bolt. That was not the factory sized bolt, and you could tell the mounting holes for it to go into had been damaged, and rethreaded (badly)

My wife's 2005 189,000 mile. GT Turbo PT Cruiser was great car. Airaid CAI with a 3 hour dyno tune. By a Ex Nascar tuner. We got 300 hp, and 331 lbs. It ran 13.4 at 104 mph in the 1/4 mile. The look at the brand new. 2005 Mustang GT owners face was priceless at the track. They where all running 13.7 + 13.9's. And they where shocked to see it was Auto. True they Turbo PT's are Real Bear to work on. No room at all.

Ray, I was told that the spring clamps are allowed to move with temperature , where as the bolt screw type do not so if they work loose they do not go back tight. Just what I was told . Don’t know for sure.👍

Yes, because as Ray told us in an earlier video, they keep constant pressure on the hose as they are always trying to get tighter due to their spring action. I have been working on my own vehicles since the early 1970's and never knew that. One of the first things I used to do when I did the first service on a new car of mine was to remove and throw away those "annoying" factory hose clamps. Now, thanks to Ray, I know better. Better late than never.

You can find some videos by Gates about how well different clamps work as temperatures drop, and rise. These springy "Roto-Clip" type clamps are basically second best. Gates thinks their heat-shrink, one-shot hose clamps are best, providing uniform pressure at all points around the hose/spigot, and handle temp changes best. The downsides to the Gates shrink bands is a) cost 2) one-shot. I mostly use the spring clamp hoses and have built quite a collection of tools to help fuss with them.

I just did a timing belt replacement which came as a kit with a new tensioner and water pump and idler pulley, also replaced the heater core lines and water inlet pipe on 2 PT Cruiser's, 1 was a 2006 and the other was a 2009 and it took 2 days to do both cars. And I believe that the people who design cars these days almost make it for us to have to pull the engine out to do any work on them theses days because there is no room really to work on them any more

When I was a boy in Florida a rain storm came through a field I was in and it left wet sand and dry sand within 6 inches of each other. Pouring rain-soaked sand and dry sand right next to it. Never seen anything like that anywhere else.

I experienced the same thing in 1980, on vacation in Hawaii, on the main island of Maui. I was walking along a street, headed to Diamond Head (volcano), and this rain cloud blew past me, dumping rain on the opposite side of the street that I was walking on. I stayed completely dry as this rain cloud wet down the other side of the street as I was steadily walking. This blew me away at the time. I have never experienced anything close to this since that day in Hawaii.

@@electronicengineer I can't help but to help out your memory here. The name of the main island is Hawaii, not Maui. The island of Hawaii is also known as the big island. And the entire chain of islands is also known as Hawaii. Diamond head volcano is on the island of Oahu, not Maui or Hawaii. Easy to get mixed up if you're island hopping on a one or two week vacation. It can go by in a blur. Anyway, If you were walking towards Diamond Head volcano, you were on the island of Oahu, probably walking near Waikiki Beach, on the island of Oahu. You can also see diamond head from Honolulu, the capitol. Just wanted to refresh your memory, which were probably really good memory's of your visit to the islands 🙂 ~ from a former Oahu, Hawaii resident.

Pro Tip: Save your radiator boxes. Thye make excellent "cushioning" in place of a creeper _AND_ when left on a large coolant spill, they wick the water up leaving only the oily residue on the floor thus saving costly petroleum absorbent.

16:59 when your bolt is in a tough spot put a piece of paper towel over a socket the push the bolt into your socket/extension. it will gently hold the bolt in place for easy installation.

Ray, the breakers in your distribution panel are not designed to be used as on/off switches. They are engineered to be current sensitive. They are designed to trip in a high current condition. Continued exposure to the locked rotor in rush current of a compressor motor (typically 5 times the name plate rated amperage) will cause them to weaken and cause nuisance shut downs in hot weather. Install a disconnect at the compressor. Do it the right way. Using the breaker as a switch is hard on the panel, against the NEC and most likely local codes.

When you bolt a self-tapping screw in plastic, turn the screw backwards until the first thread drops into the hole. Thats how you know the screw goes into its original position and not making new threads in the plastic.

I had a PT Cruiser once. After a few years, my mechanic suggested I take the radiator cap and put it on another vehicle. Then change the radiator cap. It became a white whale for the constant repairs. Wheel bearings and crosslinks were a yearly event.

Get yerself a set of T-handle ratcheting box ends. Used ‘em to pull exhaust stacks off radial engines on DC-6’s. They’ll save your knuckles and makes getting to those you can see it or touch it, but not both bolts.

Ray, according to a Mechanic friend of mine--it is Much Easier to Remove Radiator by Removing front Grill and Coming out the Front of Vehicle, less than 1/2 Time your way. Thought this might help you should you have to replace another Radiator on PT Cruiser. Like you, he did recommend that All Hoses be Replaced while Radiator is out...

Hey Ray.. interesting video as usual, like the t/stat wire trick! One small tip for you, trying to get a bolt started when you have little room for the fingers, wrap a length of lock wire around the bolt to hold it in position for you as you turn it in, and you'll never have to hunt for a dropped bolt again.

The easiest way to work on a PT Cruiser engine. Secure the claw attached to large excavator. Lift using the powerful excavator. Shake car violently until engine separates from engine compartment. I will never trade one of my 60s or 70s model truck for something with no room under the hood. You have great patients to work on suck a vehicle. Stay safe my friend.

I'm old time mechanic-i used yellow 3m gasket glue instead of wire trick-2 little dabs opposite each other will hold thermostat in place--also gaskets when you try to line things up--also put an asprin in thermostat flap this way water flows fills up cooling system and no air lock-asprin melts and system doesn't need to be bled.

The entire design if flawed. They fit a modern engine and feature in a legacy shape that was made for a smaller engine without any features. The original called for a rear traction wheels. No automatics, no AC, almost no creature comfort. Turn the engine 90 degree, push the transmission under the car and the differential in the back. Remove the electrostatic fan and the AC. Remove all those electrical sensors. And suddenly, you have plenty of room to work on that engine.

Engineers seem to be the last people to get a crack at it. Body design first then the bean counters decide how much its going to cost. Now the engine people try to jam a driveline into those parameters. They always lose.

@@kenore4003 Maybe for Chrysler. My wife's Toyota Siennas (on her third now) have been great. They seldom need work, and when they do it's obvious that the different design teams worked collaboratively to make sure that not only did everything fit well but there was decent access for servicing the vehicle. The Honda Odyssey she had at one point (admittedly a first gen) was a steaming pile (by comparison and in general). It broke a lot and everything I had to fix was much harder to do than on almost any other vehicle I've touched. This PT Cruiser looked to be much more like the Odyssey.

I guess the lower mount they gave you was for a non - turbo engine which takes an 18mm bolt.

I remember when I was a young line mechanic in 1970 at a Chev dealership I had to "tune up" a 1970 impala. I got all the sparkplugs out except for #8. I tried all sorts of tricks and could not get a socket on it. I talked to an old mechanic and he told me to drill a hole (back then the wheel splash guards were metal) through the wheel splash guard after removing the wheel. I used a hole saw and it gave me access. I found out later that most mechanics all over never changed #8. Times have not changed the engineers much.

My dad hogged out the passenger side inner fenderwell with a sawsall on his '71 Caprice to change the heater blower motor. He was pissed. He was cussing the engineers (and he was an engineer). LOL

ya know if you have the options for what you want to work on, you could always decline pt crusers if you hate working on them so much, thats part of the best thing about owning your own shop, you can choose what you work on, just make sure that the wife unit knows to decline/ignore the pt cruser emails.

Always a good idea to disconnect or connect the ground terminal on a battery last. That way if you short the "hot" terminal while connecting it you won't get an arc or burn, or worst-case a battery explosion. Had that happen twice...acid makes a mess.

Since someone wished for Ray to work endlessly on PT Cruisers (Which in my opinion would be Ray's version of Hell) we have to make up for that. HOW, you may ask.
