After our 8 foot tall sturdy fence is done being pulled we can finally start to organize the garden layout. We mill spruce lumber for our custom raised beds and get them filled with a mix of composted manure and our native soil. Next up, planting!
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

I lived in Willow in 1959. I loved where I lived. I would have never left voluntarily. Our school was a one room quanset hut. I have a coin they gave us when we became a state. We went back and found the old homestead about 10 years ago. I tried to buy it back. Unfortunately, the lady wasn't interested. I'm an old lady now. You are living my younger life. I lived on a 40 acre farm. We raised beef, had gardens, canned, etc. Thank you for your program. It helped me through a tumor in my brain. You were what distracted me from my problems. I'm now addicted. I will watch until I run out. God bless you. Keep living free.

My father was a professional gardener for many years and when plants that were wanting to be planted on, he told me and my siblings were potbound. That's where you can see the roots coming out of the pot, or whatever you have them planted in. A house plant that wants to be potbound to flower are Christmas Cactuses and similar plants. There are others that I can't name because I'm not a man who has ever been a gardener. Where I live in Britain my house doesn't have a garden, only a small walled in concrete yard.

Just remember: more tie-downs to your vertical posts means more stability, and greater strength. Don't skimp on the wire ties because it's hard and tedious. You want more ties especially around your corners. Also, the raised beds will save your back. Build it right, build it once. Also, that saw mill is mesmerizing. I love watching the logs turn into structural timbers.

The higher the raised bed, the easier on the two of you as you age. Also, I don't know if you guys like ducks, but if you have high raised beds you can keep ducks your in your garden for pest control and when you clean their water you can use that on your trees. Duck eggs are also more nutritious than chicken eggs. Also I would put down barrier fencing around the garden to keep animals from digging in. Bears will want your berries too. Just ideas, but I think it's all great, I can't wait to see what it looks like with all the plants!

Eric's cooking and your bread baking make me so hungry. You're my idols, because if I could go back and start my life over I'd be doing just what you two are doing. Living off the land and out away from everything. Being in my 70s and having severe osteoarthritis, and need both hips and knees joints replaced that Drs want to operate on put a stop to my growing a garden and canning up vegetables, but I refused to be cut on because of my fibromyalgia, it makes your pain way worse than it's supposed to be, I just can't handle this pain anymore. I'm laying on the couch now squalling because I can't get comfortable because of the pain, but I'd give anything to be where you are in your life. Thank you for posting these videos of your life, they are such a treat, I wake up everyday and turn on my phone to look for your video. Thank you for listening to an old worn out woman who knows she probably doesn't have much time left on this earth, God willing I'll be here as long as he deems necessary...❤❤❤😚

Every time the video comes to an end it makes me a little sad. I could watch you two for hours. This life was always my dream. I grew up on a small farm and do as much as I can now on my one acre, but we have to be close to town for my 82yr old dad. One day I will have my little farm life again, until then I get to live vicariously through you guys♥

That fence is impressive! Y’all continue to amaze me with just how capable you are! I grew up on a farm and am in my 6th decade of gardening, but after moving to the Northwest more than 20 years ago, my results have been nothing to brag about. The deer and the dry summers have been a challenge. And I can’t afford to hire someone to fence in my property or put in irrigation and am no longer able to do it myself. It makes me appreciate your fence so much. Anyway, I wanted to mention, although you probably already know, in addition to the covers, fill the bottom part of your hot beds with manure and other compostables because the heat from the decomposition will really warm up your hot beds. It’s an ancient way of doing that and I saw Charles Dowding show his hot beds built that way several years back in one of his videos on his YT channel. I can’t wait to see how your garden does this year!

Okay, real advice for fence pulling. Observations of your process from a lifelong farmer: 1) Change to a homemade clamp for pulling your fence tight...two 2X4s longer than the height of your wire...drill holes for carriage bolts to go through both boards (we use 4 bolts for 5' woven wire fence, so you'll need about 8 bolts. The 2X4s sandwich the woven wire fence and we attach chain (not nylon straps - not safe) to the sandwiched 2X4s with barbless stranded wire. We only use the tractor as our anchor point and use a come-along to pull the fence tight. Lastly, we never (never) pull around a corner post...always terminate your woven wire on the end post and then start with your next straight pull by starting your next piece of woven wire by doing the connection exactly as you did on the first pull. Good luck. Always rooting for you guys. Love your channel's content. 👍😊

you might consider finding some sort of solar powered watering system, and get some tanks that you can fill that can supply all the water you need during such trips. it is something i am myself considering eventually. mostly out of convenience, but also since regular watering seems to be easier if you can digitally time it, and have water supply readily available. that Fence of yours is Epic, you two are awesome at what you do.

A little nugget of info for when you’re drilling, pressure doesn’t matter. Slow speed, lots of oil, and mild pressure is what you want. Nothing burns out a bit faster than too much speed and pressure and too much heat.

I don’t grow vegetables anymore, I got tired of feeding woodchucks. I also work full time outside the home, so my time was limited. I enjoy going to local farmers markets, and supporting the wonderful people who do the hard work for the rest of us. Now I grow beautiful flowers.

@@miatfitz I am in north Queensland and have to do combat with wallabies, bandicoots, possums, bats, scrub turkeys, native rats ... I've even had wild pigs and brumbies taking a share too. I gave up gardening for a couple of years just because I was so defeated by nature. Restarted, tried to barricade everything, think I am having a bit of success ... AND then a cyclone made a direct hit in January this year. And because of the entire wet season rain pattern this year - and obviously some bizarre alignment of planets - out came the earth worms. GIANT earth worms! Too many worms. Sigh ...

This looks so good! I’m in Anchorage, and I have a couple pointers (from my own experience with big raised beds). First, I would use screws to reinforce, and a cross bar halfway across the wood. Hope that makes sense. The snow was so heavy this last year, it pulled the middle of the beds out. Good luck! It’s awesome.

Suggestion.. Arielle, you said you both like the go on trips during the summer. Watering... Why not put some raised totes, trash cans, or even 5 gallon buckets filled with water and elevated with a drip hose coming out of it. You can even buy battery operated water valves that would turn on for two hours each day. The elevated water containers would keep pressure on the drip lines and drip water on your plants while you are gone. Just a suggestion.

Awesome job you guys! 🍻 3️⃣ things if you like. 1️⃣. Paint the outside of the raised bed wood, Brown. To help soak up the 🌞's heat into your raised bed. 2️⃣. Wrap chicken wire around the bottom of the fence to keep the little critters out. 3️⃣. Don't cut the top off those metal poles for a couple of years until you are sure you don't need their length.

Raised wooden beds is the way to go. If you have a problem with weeds growing between the beds I would suggest using woven weed fabric to cover the ground. If you can install some form of heating in your polytunnel you could keep your bedding plants in it before transferring them outside. I am impressed by everything you have done since moving to this property. The difference between this and your former property is day and night. It gives you more room to expand. I even envisage a lovely cabin on the site in a few years time. Keep up the good work. Finally I have to congratulate you that your channel is not filled with advertising selling stuff that nobody wants or needs.

There is a wonderful tool my dad used when he was in the airforce working on fighter jet plans. They sell it at Harbor Frieght. 9.99 called a wire twist tie. Did you need one? Also, GAZIBO for your wife! In the middle of your garden make a small green house to make it look like a place Ariel would like to sit at and enjoy the garden. :) Also, you might wanna put holes at the very bottom of all your metal poles for drainage. Ice wont go so well stuck in there when the time is right when melting through the seasons.

Love this whole project! I'm a master gardener and the best advice I can offer is that there is always something new to learn. A new way to grow things, a better way to do things, new varieties to try - everyday is a learning day. Don't be afraid to try something new. With a clean slate - the sky is the limit. I am excited to see your progress on the garden this year.
