We haven't planted potatoes yet. It will be a few more weeks for us. Our garden plan didn't allow room for potatoes this year so we are using a raised bed method and trying a couple plants in pot's. You are a zone ahead of us so we are prepping now and I can't wait to start planting. We're growing only 5 pounds this year.

We are trying the "Southern Belle" mix from Wood Prairie Farms this year. I only bought the single set and will be putting them into ten, 15 gallon fabric plant pots. The fabric pots will sit on top of plastic spacers which then sit on an old firewood rack that has a wood floor. Spacers are so water can flow out and they also give an air gap at the bottom of the pot to help keep them from rotting the wood. I've also cut up a russet type from the grocery store that sprouted and will put that into a 17 gallon plastic tub just to see how it does. Tater time is probably next week for us as the Wood Prairie seed potatoes are in part 2 of the greensprouting process right now.

LOL...I like the Shirt....Nice. And I have planted 2 different varieties of Taters so far in containers. 4 containers at 27 Galloons a piece, each with 1/2 pound of taters. So 2 lbs so far. Red Pontiac and Grand Duke. I'm holding off on the Main Planting for a couple more weeks since our last frost date isn't until April 9th. So i'll be sticking about another 6 lbs of Taters in the soil then. 1 Lb of German Butterball and 5 lbs of Kennebec.
I had a credit from last year at Gurney’s (always the worst place to order from! Will I ever learn?) so I ordered some Red La Soda and something else (?). BUT I had some apparently small russets from Walmart which quickly started turning green & sprouting, so I planted some a few weeks ago. The rest are being cut today and most are well sprouted. Got some fertilizer to add to the others, some garlic, & these once they callus over. Not serious gardening, but just for fun. Maybe they’ll grow; maybe the raccoons & possums will dig them up. We will see…😊

Tonight I started a Vietnamese fermentation recipe using both juicy/sweeter and drier/spicier white Daikon out of the garden. Added a bit of chopped cilantro and lime zest. Should be ready to test around the 1st of the month. Raised beds make it so nice to grow the long Daikon roots.

Most the locals plant Valentine’s Day but my father in law swears by march planting so I planted both valentines and first of march last year and they performed the same except I wasn’t covering the latter crop from frost so I’m holding out this year til first of march. 15 lbs but bought an extra 5 to refrigerate and see if it will last me til September for a fall planting. I’m hoping it does.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
In a normal year, that difference in planting time probably doesn't matter that much. In a year where it gets really hot in spring, it could matter. But if you're only planting red potatoes which are fast-maturing anyways, it probably doesn't matter.

Fellow Georgian here. Want to try potatoes so badly but not there yet! May do a few in continued ant least this year. Always good to find someone similar to our climate though we are zone 8a a bit more NE of you. Two questions Re: challenges we face and want to handle as organically as possible around our food in particular.: Black lubber grasshoppers (aka. The Nemesis) And Florida betony/rattlesnake weed etc (aka Feels at Home Everywhere Weed) Any challenges from those yourself and if so, suggestions? Thought I had found a natural solution (Noto Bait) to grasshoppers but not currently available.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
Haven't ever really dealt with grasshoppers except for an invasion on some fall pumpkins this past year. They wiped them out pretty quickly. As is the case with most pests, the little ones are easy to kill but the adults are almost impossible. Haven't dealt with rattlesnake weed much though.

I try to plant my root crops on a Waning moon. I got my potatoes in on Valentine's Day. I'm curious to know if you plant by moon phases and Almanac dates. I try to, but with my busy schedule. I fall short alot. I do my potatoes in containers, it's just easier for me. To save room in my Victory Garden sized plot, for my spring veggies.
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
I don't plant by the moon or by the almanac. I find that the almanac is a little too conservative with their planting dates and I can usually plant several weeks before it recommends.

Nature safe is great stuff. especially for building soil fertility. unfortunately the only dealer within a days drive of me quit carrying it as of the first of the year. I bit the bullet on shipping cost this year and started looking ahead for a local alternative. While restocking on disease/pest prevention at my local feed supply I convinced the owner to reach out to nature safe and get a run to see how it sells! Im Hopeful. Told him i'd peddle the stuff for him if he keeps it in stock 😂! Otherwise Ill need to look into other slow release pre plant alternatives.

I still have six to eight weeks of frost, so not planting potatoes yet. Onions are in and cabbages are hardening off. I am planning on potatoes earlier this year and keeping them covered full time with row covers, though. I find them difficult to grow here because the frost-free cool season is so short. If I plant them two weeks before the last frost, they'll be scorching in 100 degree heat when they're trying to put on tubers. Sweet potatoes just do so much better. Maybe someone can recommend a white variety of sweet potato that is starchy, close to tasteless, and can mostly pass as a regular potato?
@LazyDogFarm Жыл бұрын
Try this one: www.sweetpotatoplant.com/product/o-henry/ The folks at Steele tell me it tastes great and is fast-maturing.
@bobbun9630 Жыл бұрын
@@LazyDogFarm Thanks for the recommendation! I have bookmarked it for when I order slips. Fast maturing doesn't really matter as my warm season is plenty long, but if it's just a little less obviously a sweet potato that's an added bonus.

If you have determinate potatoes, you dont need to hill them. They grow on a single layer. Hilling them is just a waste of time. Try an experiment and do a comparison. Hill some and the others just plant them 6" deep, cover them to the same height as your soil level and see what the results are. I could nearly guarantee you will get the same yield.

I plan to plant about 40 feet of potato rows this year. Simple answer please .. what happens if you don't hill your potato rows?
@joshadair4744 Жыл бұрын
It will run the risk of greening the potato’s if the sun gets them , the sun will actually penetrate and green beneath the soil a couple inches even if the potato isn’t showing that’s why we hill potato’s to avoid them from greening
@garynorcal4269 Жыл бұрын
@@joshadair4744 thank you .. appreciate the quick and simple answer.

Taters generally form above where you plant the seed piece. Hilling gives room for more taters to grow and keeps them from being exposed to the Sun. As you're hilling, you're also keeping weeds from growing.

I sure hope we don't get a hard frost because my taters are already up about 6 to 8 inches and I planted them around valentine day, I had to plant the Red Norland s before valentine day because some of them were beginning to rot and they had the longest sprouts I believe I've ever planted and they are the ones that are 6 to 8 inches tall already. My Sarpo Mira was the slowest to chit and the potatoes were so small I couldn't cut the majority of them so for the first time ever I planted whole potatoes. Hopefully I will be able to save some of them for seed.
