‘Atma’ is the most foundational principle of Indian philosophy and spirituality. The concept of atma plays a very pivotal role in the metaphysics of the Upanishads. Atma is considered in Hinduism to be the conscious and intelligent principle within the inert psycho-physical body. It is the true self of a living being which is left when he or she is stripped of all that is temporary, perishable and subject to the limitations of space and time. It is very common, for scholars and laymen alike, to translate ‘atma’ as ‘soul’. In this video Babaji and Rajiv discuss the concept of atma and the inappropriateness of its translation as soul.

When Dr. Das makes a statement that there is Paramatma and infinitely many Atmas, he should clarify that it is one of the many views of Indian philosophy (dwaita or several later versions of Dwaita to which he probably subscribes). But Advaita does not consider Atma to be many. Nor Atma in an individual is part of the Paramatma. There is Atma and Atma alone. Unless you make such clarifications, people can raise objections and create confusion in people who are not aware of these differences. I thought that the purpose of this entire effort by Rajiv is to give a unified view of India and its philosophical concepts.

A good analogy to Atma can electricity. It flows thru everything..conductors or insulators but in insulators it doesn't get manifested. That's why it doesn't 'seem' expressed. Like rocks or trees or water. Once a body falls the electricity can continue transmitting thru another body.
@vish2553
@vish2553 2 жыл бұрын
Very simple analogy but can be misleading. There are only two things in the universe. You the subject and the rest, the object. You alone exist and others , the objects sort of borrow their existence from you. The whole universe is in your consciousness! Jagat Mithya, Brahman Sathya! Apparent reality and true reality!

In this entire episode, I felt what is missing is comparison of Atma with other similar concepts, for example, the Psyche of ancient Greek Philosophy is almost same as Atma. So, also the Anima of Latin. Unless you at least mention these similarities you will be seen as partisan. Can Rajiv throw some light on these since he may be aware of those concepts? Sorry Rajiv, I have no intention to criticize. I am also highly appreciative of Dr. Das's knowledge. That is what made me spend so much time on this. Best wishes for future episodes!

Great work ! 🙏 I humbly had a doubt, if atma has consciousness as it's dharma then it would mean there is no plural as atmas. It's one. What all living entities are conscious of, aware of might be different but the fundamental principle which is the awareness itself must one, advait. Also something to be beyond time must also nesecarily be beyond space as they are two sides of the same coin hence atma which is beyond time and beyond space is eternal and beginning less. There can't be more than one eternities or beginning less entities. 🙏

I just want to clarify some things in what Dr. Das says 1. at 2.27 the quoted sloka 13.27 from Gita does it really say that whatever that moves or does not move has soul in it ? I think that it says whatever you see in the world that moves (that means alive) is a combination of insentient body (kshetra ) and a sentient soul (Kshetrajnya). So, a mountain having soul cannot be inferred from this. Am I right Guruji ?

There cannot be two atmas ! It is only given a name like parmatma the boss & many atmas under him. It "IS" the parmatma. It is "NON DUAL". The one & only that exists without change, & bliss (ananda) & chit (consciousness) are the form/properties of the formless one. It is infinite & eternal encompassing everything without exemption in this & other universes. Thats why it is said fire cannot burn it water cannot whet it, wind cannot push it. All things other than atma don't have life and have a limited time span like the stars, galaxies, humans, mountains etc. These things never lived & atma is the sustainer of these.🙏😊

I completely agree with everything that was said in this video, atma is NOT the same as soul. I hate the hereditary caste system and I do not condone the hereditary caste system, but the hereditary caste system has no basis whatsoever in the Vedic scriptures. In fact, the hereditary caste system is actually CONTRARY to what the Vedic scriptures teach. Caste was never originally hereditary, it was originally only an organisation and categorisation of society based on occupation and what occupation you had was, in those ancient times, determined by whatever your predominant guna was ('guna' is a Sanskrit word that means something like 'mode' or 'tendency' in English). This is confirmed by Lord Krishna (who is considered to be God Himself in a human form by many Hindus) when He says in the Bhagavad Gita: “According to the three gunas and the work ascribed to them, the four divisions of human society were created by Me. And, although I am the creator of this system, you should know that I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable.” Also, all of the four castes were equally necessary for Vedic Civilisation to function properly. Kshatriyas are the arms, Brahmins are the head, Vaishyas are the stomach and Shudras are the feet. This is what the Vedic scriptures declare and the message is that a person needs a head, arms, a stomach and feet to properly function and that, in a similar way, society equally needs Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras to properly function. Also, the Vedic scriptures declared for the first time anywhere in the world thousands of years ago "Vasudhaiva kutumbakam" (which in Sanskrit means "The world is one family"). Furthermore, Lord Krishna also states in the Bhagavad Gita in Chapter 5, Verse 18: "The learned, with the eyes of divine knowledge, see with equal vision a priest, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater." Also, the Vedic scriptures were the first scriptures in the world to declare thousands of years ago the fundamental oneness of all living things, for example the Katha Upanishad says: "As the same fire assumes different shapes when it consumes objects differing in shape, so does the one Self take the shape of every creature in whom He is present."

Yes. Number of Atma's are constant. They keep rotating Paramatma and when they want, based on their good or bad deeds in previous body births, they only decide to be born again. The concious of atma is so pure, they are judgement al and decides what path they have to take in next birth.

At 11:35 this speaker says Atma is different from Paramatma. That is not correct. The very word 'Atma' primarily refers to Paramatma in its ultra primary sense (parama-mukhyArtha). In secondary sense refers to we the jIvatmas. Look at what ParamaOpanishad says in this regard; AtatatvAchha mAtrutvAdAtmEti paramO hariH | AtmA bhAsAstadanyE tu na heYtEShAM tatA guNAH || -iti paramOshanishadi Hari is called 'Atma' because He is vyApta and nirmAta of this jagat. Since all other beings do not have such qualities, they are called amukhya Atma. This is said in param upanishad. -- Acharaya Madhva in His Vishnu Tatva Vinirnaya.

What Rajiv wants us to acknowledge is basically the difference between the word *SOUL* (which is used by Christians) and *Atma* by us sanatanis. He is promoting the use of sanskrit terms for important subjects like Atma, dharma etc which don't match to words like soul or religion by their abrahmic definitions.

Atma is a Sanskrit word, derived from another Sanskrit word Atm. The correct English word for Atma is SELF. Soul = Spirit, which has nothing to do with Atma.

Did you actually listen to what they said? The soul as defined in Christianity is created at birth and ascends to heaven or descends to hell after the life. Plants animals and nature itself do not have a soul (in Christian definition). Atman is infinitely old transcends the bodies and exists eternally through all living beings. It is untouched by the experiences of the sense organs and it reflects the universal consciousness on the bodies.

At 11:38 the content in the slide is quite anti-vedic. It is shown that Jivatamas are "integral part" of Paramatma. This goes against Vedic concept of Brahman is part-less (akhanda) tatvaM. Think this way -- if we are "integral part" (sic) of Paramathma, then our flaws (such as ignorance, pain, expectation of worldly desires etc) are also part of Paramatama. Such position makes Paramatma also has ignorance and goes agaist His Sarvagynattvam, SarvaShaktiman attributes. Please stop spreading anti-vedic positions.

If the Dvaitha vedanthins stop calling others names like "Mayavaadi", "Pseudo-buddhist", "Anti-Vedic", etc. maybe they could get a few people to listen to their interpretation of the Vedanta. Stop with your dumb name calling. We are not children and we are not Abrahamic and we are not intolerant. All our Acharyas played a role in preserving our civilisation. You choose, follow and teach your version of Vedanta without insulting others. You are no better than our colonial masters if you continue to denigrate and ridicule your fellow Vedic people. The Babaji actually presented Dvaitha here in a very respectful way without any insults or name calling. I understood what is Dvaitha and I am okay with that view also.
