I spoke about this topic in my class just a few months ago. (I teach Hinduism to teenagers and young adults). Many teenagers (non Hindu) here in Toronto identify with this 'SBNR' title. At the end of my class many of my own students said they would start telling those same individuals that they are in fact Hindu!

hates smug I live in Canada, having resided in several cities, and it's very wrong to state that Canada is given into Islamist demands. Although Canada has a Multi-cultural dimension, it's only at the cultural level , not religious. And of course Canada does not have the immigration problems as Europe. I've never felt that I had to "convert to Hinduism". I arrived in India in 1970 at the age of 18, and after coming in contact the Dharma, and learning about Hinduism, I just automatically realised that I had always been a Hindu but just hadn't known it. It was a liberating experience, discovering my true faith. I never had to formally give up the religion of my youth, because Hinduism explained all the quandaries and questions I had growing up as a Christian. It was like I stepped through a door into the light of Dharma and never ever considered going back into the confusing grey mist from where I had come on my spiritual path. My Guru Shri Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji gave me the name RamRani, a mantra, and He held me close and said I was His daughter. I am so happy to be Hindu!

What is mandatory, is some form of service to the Dharma, to which we are indebted. Dharmo rakshati rakshitah. If we don't serve the dharma it languishes. Besides, the external and the internal worlds are contiguous. The natural way is to be uninhibited in expressing our true self. Rare is the person who can secure the internal self from being unaffected by his or her external habits.

Spiritual but not religious, is a empty slogan. I hear this often: "Oh I am spiritual" Usually without a practice or knowledge. The West has taken Indian Spiritual Philosophy without giving credit to the sources. We do see this with plenty of fake teachers and gurus. However even as fakes do exist, at the same time real personage and traditions are there, much like Swami ji and living traditions. and For example, we would not have fake or imitation jewelry if real jewelry did not exist. The importance is discernment. And has the Buddha said, first is Right Knowledge. I admire Rajiv"s work.

SURESH POOJARY I live in Canada, however few actually convert to Hindisum for two reasons: First Hinduism does not prescribe convertions . Secondly, whom I know, are more interested in the universal philosophical aspects of Hinduism. I have also been to Ghana in Africa and was pleased to see a Hindu temple, and meet the African priest. Unfortunately, because of the Christian prostalizing, few Africans approach the beauty of Hinduism.

Visited the Hindu Monastery/Himalyan Academy last week in Kauai, HI. These people are serious and it is trip worth making. It is a very beautiful/serene place as well. I wish I could have spent more time there. Interesting fact: They planted 108 Rudraksha trees long time ago and sell really genuine rudraksha malas from those trees.

Like the show and meeting Swami ji from Hawaii. It is pleasure to listen Rajiv ji as he peals the onion skin and show the subject as clarity as he can. Only comment about this episode, I would have liked to listen what Swami ji has to say. Rajiv did not give him enough chance to speak. Most of the time only Rajiv was talking and Swami ji just nodding and just listening.

I am a proud American practicing Hindu of Kashmir Saivism and Kriya Yoga. Great discussion. I am such a fan! Also very familiar with the Himalayan Academy and fully support what they do. 🙏 I do run into the dilemma of not "fitting in as a Hindu" there were times I'd leave the Temple in tears because the Priest there would completely ignore me. Everyone else would recieve blessings, but even though I always came with offerings of flowers, fruit, and donation I would, often times, not receive the blessing. I would also be stared at quite a bit! It discouraged me from going to the Temple. Thankfully I have a beautiful home shrine and do my own puja every morning. I have been Hindu for just over 5 years now, and am preparing for my initiation into Kriya Yoga through Kriya Yoga International. Even though they are out of India, they have been very kind and encourage me quite a bit. My Sadhana is the most important aspect of my life. I take my religion of Sanatama Dharma extremly seriously. I pray that my next birth will be in India! I do not plan to ever turn on Hinduism like some of the Westerners you described. The Abrahamic religions never resonated with me. I truly believe the Goddess & Sri Ganesha led me to Hinduism. I had been practicing Wicca and Pagan religions prior to Hinduism, and that path led me to the teachings of Patanjali and I converted from Wiccan to Hindu very quickly. I have read anti Hindu propaganda, just as I've read anti Pagan propaganda, and I can see straight through all the bs, and it infuriates me to no end!

First of all my heartfelt thanks, wishes and blessings for being an open minded in the persuit of Truth. 🙏 The reason why Santana Dharma is the choice of any logical and open-minded person is because of it's openness, non-dogmatic and it's encouraging nature towards a person to inquire, practice, realize and then believe. Whereas in the Abrahamic religions it's believe or burn in hell ( no/little room for inquiry or question). Please keep going. All the obstacles should make us more mature, compassionate and a realized being. The very first Brahma sutra is "Athatho Brahma jignasa" meaning therefore (because u got a human form) you inquire about the highest Truth. Rajiv ji i really immensely appreciate the work that you are doing to save and protect this country, unearth our glorious facts of past. I bow down to you for all the trouble you take and sacrifices you make. I first saw you in a video of swami ramdevji where you gave a talk in patanjali yogpeeth. Since then i have felt that you are a modern day rishi. I always wanted to know your views on sadhguru because i love the way he is, and appreciate his work for uplifting, giving direction to this country in whatever possible way he can. After having heard him for many many hours on youtube and read his blogs on his website.. i am assured of his honesty towards our land. I can see the pain he carries in his heart for the hungry people and dying soldiers of our country. He acknowledges our cultural heritage and is trying to preserve them through gramotsav. When fashion people want him to talk on fashion.. the first thing i see is pain in his heart for the dying weaves and crushed weavers. He requests everybody to wear indian weaves... he acknowledges sanatan dharm as eternal law and hindu as a geographical identity (please see youth n truth interview with a south actor called vijay) he talks proudly about our yogis, sadhus, rishis (he mentions agastya muni, shankaracharya, raman maharishi in some videos). It is because of him that i know baalbek temple of lebanon was a creation of indians yogis.. that the entire city of alleppo (now ruined in syria) was built on indian tax payer's money... that people in some middle eastern country name their girls "hind". It is he who said to kangana straight that the london city you are praising was built on stolen money from india..it is he who crushes the british saying wherever the went they destroyed the whole race.. be it america, australia.... and then proudly he says india was the only land whose culture, people, traditions they could not wipe out. It is he who is trying to spark a fire in the callous youth and going on answering their questions about why we should stand for national anthem and say vande mataram. He says nation should be in your heart and emotions not just on paper. When shashi tharoor was going on prasing, legitimising and softening up the mughal invasion in india sadhguru gave an answer which shut him up for lifetime.. He admits that our history has been distorted and motivated at creating shame in us. He says ram and krishna are history not mythology.. just as you claim.. Rajiv sir, this little is all i remember of him right now.. there are many more such things about him that i appreciate. He makes me proud just like you make me proud ! Well, ever since my childhood, I was told by my formerly Sikh, father that Hinduism was not a religion but Dharma. He used to go to great lengths to distance himself from the concept of religion. In that sense for many years I termed myself spiritual but not religious but strongly affirmed Hindu identity. Just some reflections.

I was 'spiritual but not religious' until I learned that much of its teachings were taken from Hinduism. To be quite frank, the ideas presented in sbnr were also explained in much less detail and depth than Hindu scriptures explain. As Swamiji explained at 29:29, so many snbr, as well as my former self, do not know they are practicing Hindus! I do believe that many people in the USA are not adequately exposed to Hinduism. My case in point, I had not met a single Hindu while growing up. I also never felt 'at home' in Abrahamic religions. I did not know where to turn, so I told everyone I was sbnr. It was not until I graduated college, and the pandemic happened, that I came upon the term 'advaitist' online by chance. As I kept digging, I realized that my personal spiritual beliefs already had a long tradition stemming from Hinduism. Many sbnr teachers will spout that all religions are restrictive, but I found that they lied as many of their own teachings were rebranded and watered-down Hindu philosophy. Thus, i have since found my home in Sanatan Dharm. Thank you for bringing light to this topic!

In this sense, I can say that I missed a few steps in the U-turn theory. Rather, (perhaps I was too young) I immediately associated with sbnr and then (as I grew older) was able to research several questions and find the answers in Hinduism.

Yes he does have many times said that the concept of religion didn't really exist in India before the invasions started. Also, Hinduism is the most libertarian religion because you decide the deity or god and the way you worship or meditate. Sadhguru says that Hinduism has no one book, no papacy or authority and it can't be classified as a religion. It can be termed a way of life, a cultural identity or in our language 'Dharma'. The word 'Dharma' is not a translation of the word religion so yes his reasoning is sound. To say that he is shying away from admitting its a religion is little exaggerated here.

The best way you can counter spiritual but not religious is by spreading the message that Hinduism is not a religion at all. It is just spiritual and scientific way of life in Cohesion with nature without having to be a compulsive practitioner. The irony is, everyone in the West knows Hinduism only by associating it with the bad things like caste system while with yoga /meditation /Ayurveda/Vedas/Upanishads they deny relating it to Hinduism. Caste system is a social structure, Indian Muslims and Christians too have castes and avail caste base reservations. Also many ancient and medieval societies have had some level of caste/class systems . Like : kings/knights/priests were upper class in Europe and peasants were lower class . The Arab, Egyptian societies had slaves which Hindu kingdoms never had. Pyramids were built by the slaves. In Chinese flag too, five stars represent 5 classes: labor, agriculture worker, trader etc. For SBNR people, Hindu side should do a poorv paksha. Like asking their Western students who came to Gurus : 1)What are they trying to achieve? 2) How do students define spirituality? Asking them what they believe regarding Judeo Christianity and why they came to guru/swami etc, why not to their local priest/Rabi regarding spirituality? Why not go to Islamic maulvi? Why is that around 90 percent of Western SBNR people goto or have their teachers gone to India especially Rishikesh Ashrams for spirituality and not to any other country.3) Ask apart from Hindu gurus/yogis/swamis, which other institutions have they been to for spirituality and from where do those institutions trace their origins. Example Japanese Osho movement was something that didn't have a Hindu origin .What other such spiritual movements are there currently or in the past4) If spirituality is found in other sects/religions too, Why is it rarely the other way around: You never see a Hindu going to a catholic priest, a Jewish Rabbi or an Islamic cleric for being spiritual. The conversions you see in India are forced conversions mostly with Evangelists going door to door and offering money/incentives to convert. Its very rare that a Hindu on his own will go to a Catholic priest on his own.5) Before teaching the philosophical parts, Veda, Yoga, Upanishads , tell them they are integral part of Hinduism and Hindu scriptures, and not a stand alone text/movement. Also, Let disciples of gurus read about the Bible/Torah and the guru should have knowledge of the teachings of them too. Its strange that the Arabs/Islamists and the British did a translation of our religious scriptures: Vedas, etc but we Hindus never bothered to do the same. Did we ever translate the Quran/Bible into Hindi and read what it says ? No. Forget the Bible, how many percentage of current Hindus have read Vedas, Upnishads, Samhitas? Barely 1-2 percent.6) Many westerners think Hinduism means worshiping many Gods . Explain clearly the concept in Rigveda :Truth is one, sages call it by many names (God is one, there are many ways/paths to him ). Compare/Contrast it with Judaism/ Islam/Christianity which say only my God/ my chosen religious path is true , everything else is false and the fanaticism /conflict this has created in history (Jewish Exodus from Christian Europe), Christian/Islamic Crusades and current ongoing conflict. In contrast, all the eastern religions (from India /China and Japan) never had any conflict with each other and till date live with tolerance and respect for others. In India, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism have been with harmony with each other, In China Buddhism, Confusium, Taoism have been in harmony with each other7) If students wish to convert, tell them the key beliefs of Hinduism. Many assume to be a Hindu one needs to worship exotic looking Gods which is not true. Tell about key beliefs: One god/many paths , Ataman, Divinity of humans (oneness with God compared to original sinner in Bible), Dharma, Karma , Yoga, Samhita, Reincarnation, Mokshya. Worshiping Gods is personal choice (part of Bhakti yoga). Deity worship is one of the ways to God, not the only way and neither an essential practice of Hinduism , although is a hugely popular practice .8) Quantify the various aspects of Religion and determine the essential belief/practice key to religion, and then form a package . For Example, Vedic philosophy, spirituality, dharma, ritualistic practices, belief in epics, social practices, cultural practices, ethnic elements. Current generation Indian Hindus are fed up with ritualistic Hindu practices like various types of poojas which our moms do but don't understand. I believe in Aatman, Dharma, Karma, Samhita, Moksha but I don't like to do pooja . Pooja/ritualistic offering is not essential element. I don't like to wear the Chandan on forhead, many Hindus don't . If a westerner converts , he/she shouldn't have to wear Chandan, bindi, saffron/white clothes, dhoti , saree etc, or belong to any caste, or believe in arranged marriages, or worship one or many Gods. These are cultural and social practices, not essential religious practices. I see many westerners wear these, they think to be Hindu you need to dress in certain manner which is not true. A role model for a western convert to Hindusim would be Tulsi Gabbard. She has a Sanskrit first name, family/ethnic title (gabbard), is religiously/spiritually Hindu, is ethnically Hawaiian and culturally/socially American ( believes in American values), follows Dharmic tradition in thinking/decision making , has knowledge of Vedas, Gita,etc. She doesn't appear to be ritualistic Hindu (doing pooja, wearing Chandan etc.), or trying to make a statement by wearing Saree9) Explain the epics/stories /narratives in figurative/symbolic manner rather than literal manner. This should be done to Indian youth as well as Westerners. Abhramic religions take their text literally. So this needs to be contrasted with Dharmic practices. The Puranic story of moon having 27 wives is a narrative for explaining 27 days of moon cycle. The Rahu -Ketu-Shani being angry and being pacified is symbolism for certain planetary positions have adverse effects on Earth events . Shiva Shakti depiction is symbolism for purush-prakriti, does not literally mean Shiva is actually sitting in Himalayas. Indra getting jealous/destroying means flood/thunderstorm happened . Ram abandoning Sita didn't mean he does not trust her, but in being a perfect king his family had to suffer because of social norms of that time. In fact their should be commentary on the epics to better explain them that why did certain sages/kings, etc act a certain way. This will help current generation of Hindu youth understand many scriptures better as well as others too who want an answer in different religions

The problem is that Hinduism was developed by enlightened sages. Many things like reincarnation and karma can only be understood after one attains enlightenment. Most Hindus and most people aren't enlightened; that's why it's hard to relate to such things. I agree with Rajiv that we have to maintain a strong identity.

Adi shankara was called a prachhanna-bauddha (buddhist in disguise) by some Vaishnavas. So there is no clear cut difference between buddhism and some forms of hinduism. Buddhism is the likely end point for some who are spiritual but not religious as they slowly lose faith in the idea of God but see value in Spiritual practices including meditation. THis is particularly so when they learn to understand Karma and the importance of niskaam Karma. That said, there are those who turn to Yoga and then pursue spirituality through meditative and other practices - some go to Gurus like Dyer, Tolle and Deepak Chopra. Hinduism or more generally Sanatan Dharma does encourage this when it is a deep rooted and heartfelt idea. But I am very impressed with this particular presentation and discussion. Thank you.

Roots are always deep rooted. They are spread all over. Our spiritual books are the roots of Hinduism. From the roots come out a big tree. The tree gives fruits. Sweet as well as sour. ‘Spiritual but not religious’ is a fashionable term to show that one is knowledgeable enough to understand spirituality to be considered as a class and not to be included in mass. Language tells the source of origins. Sanskrit is most rich versatile language and mother of Indian language. Tamil also a rich language with ancients roots believe to be older than sanskrit.
