As a young child of seven, one major factor in the decision to keep me back a grade was my lack of skill with cursive writing. (The style you sign off with) That one well-meaning decision brought about instant low self esteem, and a failure mindset. Now, California (not my state) is teaching cursive writing once again, after most states discontinued it as being outdated and unnecessary. My own skill, in printing and writing, is now very fine and well established. I have yet to completely heal from that early childhood trauma. It was mind controlling and life changing. I am finally coming to recognize the true inner self that you speak about here; with the beginnings of a balanced and satisfying final chapter within reach for me. Your videos are always insightful and inspiring. Thanks.

Oh, it really does matter how much it costs, because all of this perfection is very, very expensive, and people who can afford this kind of bed make a lot of money. Having nothing to do with cost, but just appreciating the value of the work and knowing that every detail has been refined to have the best possible end, is really the important thing here. It’s a philosophy that can be used in every walk of life, has largely been lost in our throw away society, and has become less and less expected. We’ve settled for mediocre everything. When we see something like this, our sense of what work is, can change. Any work, from sweeping a path, to washing our car. It is just wonderful. It sets a high standard, and isn’t that nice.

There are so many messages here, open to interpretation and idealization. As one who has lived in the higher end whatever-it-takes-craft world for a bit, it is truly a piece of heaven!!! As I was working day and night to pay the bills, little did I realize that my craftsman friends were from inherited wealth (oh, well). The garments I wove still look fresh after 40+ years, and just as stylish. No regrets, but it did not turn out to be the long-term lifestyle I envisioned. I enjoyed this video, but for those who haven't been there -- there's a lot more that goes into making it in this labor-intensive sphere, especially if you're not 4th generation. Dovetailing this video, see also Rajiv's "Visiting a Custom Upholsterer" from about a year ago. Again, highest level of upholstering, closer to home for some of us. Respect to both!

I have mixed feelings about this lovely exploration of quality and finding one's bliss. I’m happy Mr. R was lucky enough to be born into the right family and now gets to create a form of art that happens to be a bed. However, as someone who used to volunteer for a housing charity, and often needed to find mattresses at the best (often lowest) price possible, I will always remember a nine year old boy who was very excited by his first real bed and (cheap) mattress. Previously he had spent his entire childhood sleeping on a series of old sofa cushions spread on the floor. I guess I would just like to see a more fair world in which if the uber-wealthy get to sleep on a $20,000-$300,000 masterpiece of a bed, that everyone else should at least be guaranteed a bed of decent quality. We just need the will to make it happen.
@a.o96565 күн бұрын
I get what you're saying! I think the philosophy behind Rajiv is that you 'buy' and use the best quality you can afford so that things can last longer. In many of his antique videos he speaks about not buying it unless it's a low price and in great condition. To a child or any person who is making it rough in this world, that very cheap mattress will be valued and hopefully treated with all their love and care. Hopefully they can then trade up and get the next "better" mattress and so on - just has the child went from old sofa cushion to a mattress. There are many channels that are all about brands and getting the most expensive thing. I don't believe that's this channel though. I don't think this channel is trying to promote buying an expensive lifestyle, but rather a very curated one. I'm personally unable to afford expensive things too. But I'm trying to learn the message of keeping treasured things and looking after them well. Not out to argue with you, but just a conversation I hope. =)

Just a question: how is the horsehair sourced? In the US, kill buyers purchase horses and ship them to either Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Some of the horses might be old or sick but they don’t deserve to go to slaughter. There are efforts in congress to end this practice, as it was ended for dogs and cats. Jan is such a nice pleasant guy. It seems like it's easier to find quality workmanship being done in Europe than it is here in the US. I love my country but sadly so much of this attention to detail & quality work such as that which is seen in this video is sorely lacking here.{*Edit: 'lacking' the reason being we barely manufacture anything here anymore.} Wish I could afford a Hastens 😞. However I have a feeling you will be owning one before long Rajiv.

I agree. It’s the speed of life. The mass production. Everyone wanting to find the most inexpensive product often because they have no choice. The whole atmosphere of this factory seems to be about caring about the staff down to caring about the workmanship and the product. It’s not like that in every work place, some places are working the staff to death, it’s all about sales figures at any cost, it’s sad how things are sometimes. The philosophy of this man is so lovely.

How amazing is this episode! You and this gentleman are so much alike from different countries and different generations. Yet you hold fast. The ideas of how well made things are important, you understand the making of them and so does he, and so much so that he felt it and it evoked a real and true emotional response in him which was wonderful. I'm hoping he sends your mattress. But anyway, with your knowledge about how to make things and this factory, together this was made for you to speak of.. And the handy work and the people, and how they knew their jobs must be done absolutely perfectly and how dedicated they were to the work. That's actually what America was made on and this is going to weigh in America and I'm hoping more people that watch you Rajiv, The more people that were understand this. I really and truly enjoyed this and I'm already taking so much of what you say to heart and changing things within my own home. Let us embrace doing a good job, looking for well-made things because we can't afford to buy the cheap ones. We need things that last a lifetime as you always say. You know washers and dryers and stoves and refrigerators they're now made to last you five or six years and so is your hot water heater and so on. The furnace I recently replaced in my home lasted 45 years. The estimation for the life of the new one is 10. And still in yourself and in your children. A sense of pride in whatever type of work you do. It doesn't matter what it is if you're making a hamburger or you're making a sofa or you're a secretary. Do the best you can at all times❤❤❤ Just like this fine gentlemen and his company. Now aside from all that, isn't that the dream mattress? Oh my goodness gracious! I can't even imagine being able to have that mattress.

Absolutely wonderful video. I have always dreamed of sleeping in a Hastëns bed. Thank you for introducing us the CEO, he is a beautiful soul. So moving end.
