A great whisky is one you can both enjoy and afford. Every enthusiast should be seeking for this because it will make our enjoyment greater and undermine the price gouging of customers by cynical marketing and pricing behaviour of the those selling whisky and abusing brand loyalty. You provide us with the means to make thoughtful choices and avoid the traps Ralfy, it is appreciated by me and all your malt mates. Thank you.

Here here! Well said Ralfy. Some may not want to admit it but your assessment on this particular topic is spot on.

You are totally right. I have bought so many bottles and been disappointed. Arran 10 being one of them. Whisky of the year here, there and everywhere, of course I expect gold and angels, but no… But after a few weeks and drams and the expectation is lowered, it’s a great whisky.

The category of whiksy of the year always has to be grounded in reality. Otherwise some 30 year old £2000 bottle would win every year.

Had similar experience with the “hot” brands of late. The brands that many wax about simply have not impressed me. And I do not think I’m wrong. I think they may simply be far cheaper where others encountered them and aren’t worth a premium. So I’ve stopped paying a premium for ANY brand of whisky, period. And I’ve had better success since

BRAVO, Sir, Bravo. I recently fell for a subscription whisky service and its feverish promotion of an 'exclusive release' from one of the more recognisable independent distilleries. I was ready with my shopping cart piled high and consumed all of their promotional waffle in the lead-up to the day of release-they even had the celebrity Master Blender shoot a short video 'tasting' the release and extolling its virtues. When I finally received my numerous bottles it was not long before I realised that the Emporer wasn't wearing any bloody clothes. That so-called vintage is awful - hot, young, badly blended and quite obviously shipped out the back door to an unsuspecting captive audience via a bulk deal that included a paid endorsement. Lesson learned.

I’d like to give a good shout out to Old Parr 12, as being a good value “cheap” blend. It’s under $30 where I am and it’s better than JW Black for those looking for either a budget dram or a pallet starter. It’s markedly better now than it was last I bought it, about 3 years ago.

Great points, sir! I have a bottle of Edradour single cask that was nice when I first opened it and poured two drams. Six months later, I poured a dram and it was absolutely amazing! Oxidization, in my opinion, really helps the whisky open up. Cheers, Ralfy!

Well said about coming back to a whisky from time to time over the course of a year or two. I've gained a greater appreciation for a dram by recognizing the smell and flavor sensation a few months on while at the same time discovering more depth in, say for example, development on the palate. As time goes by my palate changes with experience, and the whisky seems to change in the bottle, too.

I've experienced one malt going from good to bad (to me) and one from bad to good, both after at least two months of opening and sitting, having trialed each for about 1/3 of the bottle. Downside of any of it, you have to pay your money and take the chance to make the discoveries.

Thanks for your help in fast-forwarding my experience and knowledge with single malts and other fine alcoholic beverages for the past seven years! And I just thought of a malt mention, when my turn comes: Malticolored Maltoholic Malt Mates! And you may (more simply) just refer to me as "JF". Thank you again Ralfy!

Whisky is best enjoyed over a good few months the liquid and our attitude to it are moulded together over time, definitely changes and improves the experience I’ve always got three or four bottles open and alternate between them

For a future review, I do recommend Lindores at cask strength - still young, but the friar jon cor chapter II are still accessible and sub £70 for a lowlands, cask strength whisky with a peated cask finish.

In ‘94 I had a Pentium PC and was bumping around the internet on a 28.8k modem. It took 30 minutes to listen to a 30 second clip of a song on MTV’s website. Back then, we certainly had an internet… but not a widely popular forum infrastructure. That came (IMO) in 1999-2002 roughly.

Are all Benriachs triple distilled? Edit: it seems they do it once a year and there is an expression that states it clearly on the bottle. The website says: Although Scotch Whisky is traditionally distilled just twice, in the spirit of our bold distilling tradition, Benriach have been experimenting with a third distillation since 1998, giving the spirit an even more fruity and zesty character. Building on the rich cask maturation profile of Benriach expressions, this rare triple distilled whisky from Speyside has matured for at least ten years in first fill american Bourbon barrels and first fill Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks.

It is surprising to me how much bottlings of whisky vary over time. I've had a few whiskies where the neck pour and even the second dram have left me wondering why I bought it. Then it completely changes by the third or fourth dram. Others I've had where the neck pour has been pretty good but gets even better by the third or fourth dram. I've also had a few deteriorate slightly after about 12-18 months. Still really good but not as good as they were at 4-6 months. While others that have been open for the same length of time, with similar amounts in the bottle, show almost no deterioration. It all adds to the exploration and experience. Cheers!

At the end of the day no matter how hyped its has been or expensive it is, some whiskies just don't deliver. And others we haven't been paying attention to do. Fool me once...

Arrived in Edinburgh a few minutes ago from the U.S. hope to find some good scotch. Going to the Deanston and glengoyne distilleries on Tuesday. Deanston 18 is on my list. Any recommendations from glengoyne.

Nice distillery EXPENSIVE shop. NAS cask strength is best option for the price, IF you will pay their high premium.

Great extra's Ralfy. You got me thinking, what is the most essential/purest moment for a whisky to present itself? Neckpour, fresh of the new opened bottle, after some time in the glass? Or when the bottle has been opened for a year or so? Or is that just personal opinion for the enjoyer? Maltmention: hello malty methane mufflers

whisky is now too expensive to take a risk on. Nowadays, I won't take a gamble on a bottle (e.g.from a new distillery) unless I first taste it myself, or a trusted malt-mate gives me the nod. Whisky is now falling victim to their own hikes in prices, as I know I'm not the only one whose buying habits have changed in recent years. Sure, ill.splash out £100 - £200 on a bottle, but it will be one I know I'll like (or have a very strong chance of liking). It's Also quite amusing to see that the secondary market has tanked - these 'elusive' special editions are selling for far less than rrp; there's simply little to no profit to be had for flippers anymore

Ralfy, can you maybe do a review on LL Noble Rebel series of Blended malts, then there's the one from Dràm Mòr ,Dumbarton Rock Blended Malt ,all 46%abv and non chill filtered, and most probably natural colour. I don't think I've heard anyone mentioning them, and as you probably know there's the 3 different ones of the Noble Rebel whiskies.

Frankly, Ralfy, I generally don't pay close attention to the malt mark. I pay more attention to your body language, your facial expressions and the tone of your voice to get an idea of how you really feel about a whisky. Don't ever become self-conscious of that, please.

Ralfy's words are so well considered and weighted I can guess the malt mark nearly half the time, and to a point either side 99% of the time. Ralfy's consistency is the real star!

Certainly agree with that. Personally, I don't like marking schemes at all, since most of the lower values are totally redundant.
