Hi Ralfy, you may recall I told you about a tainted bottle of Clynelish I bought from the distillery some 30 years ago. I rang the distillery, they collected the bottle from my home, confirmed the batch was contaminated, provided me with a replacement and a collection of DiAgio minitures. Nick from York

This has only happened to me once. Soured whiskey… a curious brown stain at the bottom of the bottle releasing threads when disturbed.

In the USA, no shop worker or owner I know would ever taste from a bottle a customer brought in. Paranoia of tainting and a general attitude of “no return once opened” is prevalent here.

This applies to beer too. Had a batch of unusually acidic, sweet and sour tasting Don de Dieu (Unibroue) a year or two ago. Tripels can be a little acidic, but I was quite familiar to how the Don de Dieu normally tasted. I can't imagine I was the only one to complain, because they took it seriously, confirmed it on their side, removed the Don de Dieu from the variety 12-packs (and it sure seemed like they recalled the packs with the Don de Dieu in it off the shelves) within about two WEEKS of reports, and gave me two free variety 12-pack coupons. Now, keep in mind Unibroue is a microbrewery in Quebec that grew into a macrobrewery when they were bought by Sapporo. This was especially unexpected professionalism coming from a macrobrewery.

Greeting Mr Ralfy, and thank you for another informative video. I believe I had a bad bottle, and it was Glenfarclas 12. Unfortunately, local bottle shops here have min knowledge of whisky. I have noticed that one particular bottle shop here , when I go there, I can see that Oh Man Not Him Again look on their faces. I always challenge them when they are talking crap.

I've only had 2 really bad over sulphured whiskies. Both were undrinkable, both were Glenfarclas purchased at different times from different retailers. I will never buy another bottle of Glenfarclas again.

I needed this video a couple years ago. Early on in my journey, I bought a bottle that I remembered enjoying in the pub, but the bottle was sheer rotgut. It was permanent markers on the nose and palate. Sadly, I wasn’t confident enough in my palate at the time, so I kept trying - and failing - to find something to appreciate. I wrote it off as a loss. Who returns an opened bottle of whisky? Nowadays I think I could do it, but only because I’ve learned a lot since then. (Credit where credit is due… Ralfy and Roy have never steered me wrong.)

Totally agree... Coming from Germany, there are rumors that especially sulfury casks are selected for the German market as we have quite a lot of people who tending to like this as a "aroma"... Me instead I would like to have a warning label or something like that when it comes to sulfury....

If they know what they do they use citric acid to avoid cask getting sour. Or they burn sulfur paper (not candles today) with impact of sulfur smell and taste.

I learnt to overcome the discomfort of complaining years ago, if for any reason i was unhappy with a pocket money purchase he'd march me back to the shop and standby whilst i fought my case 😂😂😂

PX sherry covers up a lot of things. All of those double and triple cask bottlings where PX is the last one are probably covering up mediocre scotch, whatever the age.

Twice I bought whisky bottles and they had a terrible bad cork taste... One was a Glenturret 12YO in November, one Edradour Caledonia, 3 years ago. As for wine,it can happen... I brought the bottles back in the shop I bought them and they were replaced immediately without any problem or discussion... But you can unfortunately verify that at 46°, you are at the point where the most aromas and tastes are transported by alcohol when you tasted this "roten" whisky just before to go blowing in a bagpipes for 45 minutes 🤮.... more you blow, more the taste develops itself...

Sour sherry casks give off a balsamic vinegar note, and once you taste it you’ll never forget it. Not a good note whatsoever

I hope that there will be a follow up video and that they send a sample to the distillery so that we know if they took any action. I bought a whisky that was so terrible that I could not give it away. Nice video sir

I believe to have crossed paths with such blended whisky being dressed up in big sherry influence to cover some defects. It was a bottle of DESMOND & DUFF 12 years Deluxe scotch whisky bought at auction on ebay. This was a rather popular blend sold in Italy in the '80s, still available on the internet. It's whisky matured in tired casks, undermatured for it's age, with big sherry notes that cover sulfur and funkiness that are noticeable in the development. I paid chips for it on the internet and nowadays importer and bottler are failed business I believe so I have nobody to complain to. But hey, thanks to Ralfy now I have a reference point and an opinion about it❤

Hi ralfy I have had a bad batch of berry bros sherry cask bottle , very sulphur infused. Put me off buying another. But , as you say as I have whisky buddy's & my local is a whisky influenced bar I have had samples given of different sherry cask berry bros . I couldn't believe that a well established independent bottler could turn out such a soure sherried whisky

From now on, I'll probably steer clear of whisky matured in different casks as this might be masking a bad 1st cask?

I didn't expect that too!! But credit where credit is due and they're a lovely company to deal with. I had a similar issue once with blue label.

So that explains why my 70€ Lagavulin 16 smelled of sulfur. It was so bad i ended up pouring it down the drain. I will never buy from them again and i make sure to let everyone known about it on it every lagavulin related comment section.
