Ralfy, another fine review. You do realize that we have to go back to Ralfy Review 96 for the first, last, & only time that your reviewed Glenfiddich 15 Solera. At that time, you gave it a darn healthy 88 Malt Mark. Also, GF 15 Sol is indeed one of the best quality & price point Scotch Whiskys around. Because of these two facts, we of the unwashed masses are in need of, & we request a re-review of GF 15 Sol at some near point in time. Thanks, from the greater New Orleans, Louisiana area. Richard

Being a Kentuckian, I liked Bourbon and not the cheap Scotch I tasted in college. However, on my first trip to Scotland, I though I should bring something distinctive home. So, in the Gatwick duty free store, I purchased a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 YO Solera Reserve. I didn't open it for about two years; but, when I finally did, I found I liked it. Since then, I've come to drink single malt whisky almost exclusively.

IMHO if Glenfiddich wanted to pull a rabbit out of the hat they should introduce a few "nadurra" bottlings (call it something else, of course) - with age statements. I would be very interested in NCF natural color 'fiddich. They could keep some of the current bottlings for people who use their whisky as ice melt, of course. I check local liquor stores periodically and I am noticing that newer expressions seem to all be responding to the Ralfy-rants. I see more NCF, higher abv, natural color bottles. Also, new players realized that it's their only way to be noticed against the 40% behemoths. Nice to see that. I'm a bit concerned that it might become a way to offer mediocre malts, after all, even bad whisky starts out at cask strength and can be NCF and natural color. But that's what reviews are for :)

Recently, I passed this up (Glenfiddich 12) for a bottle of GlenLivet 12 instead over the Christmas holiday. I liked the Glenlivet but maybe it's time to give the Glenfiddich a try. As I replenish my stock of three scotches (including the ARdbeg 12 that I didn't like very much, but am not liking a lot less, lately - to the point of wanting to replenish) I will look for this label.

I think Duty Free shops still do exist in some places, i.e. about a year ago crossing from Canada into the US I bought a 1L bottle of Glenfiddich Solera "Reserve Cask" - a NAS made to look very similar to the Solera 15 (still haven't tried it yet). It cost me $50US with no additional surcharges on top. Not bad for 1L. Even came with a gift of "whisky rocks" - 2 marble cubes in a Glendfiddich string purse baggie. They also have the NAS "Select Cask" - green, a look-alike of 12.
@justinskaggs97516 жыл бұрын
Yes, I noticed that those shops can be much cheaper, IF you are a smart shopper. They tend to sell 1L bottles Rather than 700ML, minus the duty, and if you get what they have on sale, or the less well known stuff, it can be great value. I saved a lot on a Glenfarclas 105 in the Amsterdam Airport on the way to America

Very educational video Ralfy keep up the good work. You mentioned about taking care of your own avatar. It is well known that If men are going through a tough time, maybe broke up with a girlfriend or couldn't get a girlfriend men use drink to cope. Just a thought from my experience in life! Talking to somebody about a man's problems doesn't help because in life men are totally at the mercy of what women perceive to be their ideal man. And other men who don't conform to their standards are left on the side line. Alot of men do fall back on alcohol to take the edge off life. In an ideal world where we all get what we want in life I do believe every single person can take care of there avatar. But each to there own! :)

Ralfy, (or other experienced malt mates), I have heard that Glenmorangie has the 'tallest stills' making for unique flavor. Yet I am under the impression that it is also a great starter single malt. (I am American and largely a fan of bourbons). Is it worthwhile to purchase both Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich as an indroduction, or would I be better served getting myself acclimated to blends and Glenfiddich alone?

Hi @ralfydotcom, I have an old Glenfiddich tin that my grandfather got somewhere when he was still alive. This tin was passed to my mother when I was still young, and she used it to store knitting needles in it. I would LOVE to know if there's some history to this tin, and I was wondering if there's a way to contact you so that I can send you some pictures of it for you to look at? The metallic tin is a square one with a lid on the front, different to the current idea Glenfiddich has to create circular or triangular tins with lids opening from the top. It has no age or marks that I can identify, but it also contains a pamphlet that outlines the "Clans of Glenfiddich" with a short history on each. I have no intention of getting rid of this tin as it has a lot of sentimental value to me and it's incidentally that same tin that got me loving Glenfiddich whisky and, by exploration, single malt Scotch whiskies alike. I am looking forward to your (hopeful) reply! PS: The tin looks like this one: www.worldwidewhiskies.com/image/cache/catalog/Glenfiddich%20Clan%20Montgomerie%20Tin%202-006-500x500-0.JPG

@JETJOOBOY7 жыл бұрын
OK, fair one.. Could you remind me why you don't review none age stated whisky ? From the literature I read the IPA is their 12 year old aged in IPA barrels for 4 weeks.. The beer sounds fun, only saw it once and I forgot where it was now.. Speyside Craft Brewery - Glenfiddich Brew 2 IPA..
@JETJOOBOY7 жыл бұрын
Alex K He says not above... I thought a short video on the Whisky paired with the IPA might be a nice little mini video.. Even if it isn't a "Ralfy Review"?
@alexk30887 жыл бұрын
IIRC Ralfy's said before that you can pair any good ale and a good whisky, or something like that. But it's interesting to experiment what works better with the bitter aromatic IPAs. I think the one time I tried that, it was with this Glenfiddich 12 :-) However, any Ralfy insights or guidelines about what style of beer/malt to pair could be enlightening. Like when Ralfy pointed out that if you have sweet foods before tasting a whisky, it'll accentuate bitter notes in the whisky, while if you have bitter foods, it'll perhaps accentuate sweetness, etc.

On the point of Ailsa Bay. I sense it is a malt you would review except it doesn't have an age statement - which I fully understand why and righlty so. It got me thinking of other NAS malts you would consider worthy of mentioning. I know you are a fan of the earlier Laphroaig Qrtr Cask. By the way, I have tried Ailsa Bay and felt it was similar to Hakushu, which I like very much. Scapa Skiren is my fave NAS at the moment. Any chance of a re-review of Glenmorangie 10.. my very first single malt and one that is a strong contender as a staple malt to have in your cabinet me thinks! Cheers.

So much NAS coming out these days. A distillery like Glenfiddich could be the one to make 20+ year old age statements affordable to the masses. They have huge capacity and stocks. Let out a 21 for $90 and it would be revolutionary. Few others could compete with that.

I concur. I believe the reviews may have a slightly more segmented feel (by way of analogy, consider 1990s National Public Radio broadcasts in the USA versus today's) but for the sake of easy indexing of topics, this might be the best way to go. Very fine extras moment, Ralfy! I'll always miss your more amorphous "fireside chats," but so long as the extras are of sufficient depth and length, there's minimal harm done. (Yet one more critical point: I do believe, Ralfy, that people will be watching your videos long after the actual information is obsolete. That said, I respectfully request that you take care never to change the ingredient most intrinsic to your success: YOU. Ignore any pressures that might result from the 100k subscribers or from the presence of the Patreon pals.) Thanks & best wishes: -Michael

Same reasons for the prohibition of cannibis and hemp plants in North America. These plants not only produce fibers used for he making of ropes for the navy ( special licenses were issued to farmers during WWII to produce hemp or ropes when supplies in the Pacific dried up ) these plants can produce paper and cloth fibers quicker and cheaper especially for paper production. Oils which came from these plants were developed into plastics which were stronger and lighter than steel ( steel industry was instrumental in the banning of these plants ). Today we see new medicines are being developed form the cannibis plant without serious side effects, however big pharma is paying politicians to maintain the illegality so as they may sell their poisons. Fact, most big pharma meds have serious side effects which require more meds from these companies which they also have their side effects. A cascading big profit deal for these companies while a cascading downfall and quicker death for the public.

Ralfy, you should be careful not to say nonsense about history just because you enjoy being original and "right against the mainstream", despising people just because they appear to you to belong to the majority. You should know that you are biased and try to control your biases instead of letting free reigns to them. You do nice reviews and often say right things, but you do have to control yourself because you are often wrong too. What I see is a man overridden by his hatreds of what he judges "elites" of various kinds. Thank you for the efforts you do make, I am just trying to help you and other people, when anybody can influence others on the internet, without checks.
