Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), a Christian college student, enrolls in a philosophy class taught by Professor Jeffrey Radisson (Kevin Sorbo), an atheist, who demands that his students sign a declaration that "God is dead" to get a passing grade. Josh is the only student in the class who refuses to sign and is then required by Radisson to debate the topic with him, with the class members deciding who wins.
Radisson's girlfriend, Mina (Cory Oliver) is a Christian whom he often belittles in front of his fellow atheist colleagues. Her brother Mark (Dean Cain) is a successful businessman and atheist who refuses to see their mother, who suffers from dementia. Mark breaks up with his girlfriend, Amy (Trisha LaFache), a left-wing blogger, when she is diagnosed with cancer. A girl named Ayisha (Hadeel Sittu), whose family (especially her father) are strongly devout Muslims, is secretly Christian; when her father discovers this, he throws her out.
Radisson gives Josh 20 minutes at the end of the first three lecture sessions to argue that God exists. In the first two debates, Radisson has counter arguments for all of Josh's points. Josh's girlfriend Kara (Cassidy Gifford) breaks up with him, fearing that standing up to Radisson will jeopardize their academic future. Ultimately, it comes down to the third and final debate between Radisson and Josh, who again both make compelling points. Josh then halts his line of debate to pose a question to Radisson: "Why do you hate God?" After Josh repeats the question twice more, Radisson explodes in rage, confirming he hates God for his mother's death that left him alone despite his prayers. Josh then casually asks Radisson how he can hate someone that doesn't exist. In the end, Martin (Paul Kwo), a foreign exchange student whose father had encouraged him not to convert to Christianity, stands up and says "God's not dead." Almost the entire class follows Martin's lead, causing Radisson to leave the room in defeat.
After the final debate, Josh invites the newly born-again Martin to attend the Newsboys concert that is in town. Radisson reads a letter from his late mother, and is moved to reconcile with Mina. Amy confronts the Newsboys in their dressing room, only to admit that she wants to get to know God. While on his way to find her, Radisson is struck by a car and fatally injured. Reverend Dave (David A. R. White) finds him and guides him in becoming a born-again Christian as he takes his last breath. Mark taunts his mother, who turns the tables on him and tells him that the devil has helped him to succeed, to keep him from turning to God. Before the final song, the Newsboys play a video clip of Willie Robertson congratulating the 'young man' who successfully defended God against his professor. The Newsboys then play their song "God's Not Dead", dedicating it to the same person Robertson commended.

You are allowed to hate someone that doesnt exist. You can hate Vader Voldemort or the Joker. Doesnt matter. Just like you can love God whether or not he exists or not. All that the ending proves is that Radison has bias. This would maximum prove that he thinks God is real and is therfore a pitiful misotheist disguised as an atheist for justification. Not that God actually is real

@tatianabacca2191 4 жыл бұрын
@@matiaspereyra9375 The difference is that he hates God because God took away his son. A fictional character like Voldemort can be hated for what he does in the books or. movies. But since Voldemort isn't real, no one can hate him because he killed their son. Voldemort doesn't have any power in reality. The professor is not an accurate atheist because he has to believe God has enough power in his life to take away his son.

It seems the kind of evangelical Christian who makes movies like this simply cannot wrap their minds around the concept of someone not believing in god. In their worldview people either love god or hate god, and people who hate god are “atheists” because it’s simply impossible to genuinely believe god doesn’t exist!

When someone wants to make a religious movie, they should consider the greater meaning of their film. If all it amounts to is "I LOVE JESUS", then they need to rethink it a lot. In Prince of Egypt, religion serves the narrative of the broken bond between two brothers, who must try to do what's right for their respective peoples. In Hunchback of Notre Dame, religion represents a kind of power to accept and be kind to all people, and it examines the fact that powerful people can manipulate religion to exclude and to fear. In God's not dead, the greater meaning isn't just "I LOVE JESUS"... It's "I LOVE JESUS, AND IF *YOU* DON'T THEN YOU'RE A *SINNER!!!* "
@bobjones2959

That's the problem. Most of the time the people who make these typical "Christian Mom" films aren't interested in film-making or storytelling, they are interested in pushing an ideological perspective and narrative, which inevitably results in the films they make becoming propaganda rather than blockbusters, intentionally or not.

Second of all why did they just stare at the guy hit by a car, GET AN AMBULANCE, then you can say whatever you want because you know there's help on the way. Finally you don't have to have everyone think the same as you that's their choice not yours.

There is a religious story I once heard about atheists. It goes something like this. _A teacher is sitting with a student, telling him that God made everything in this universe to teach humanity a lesson. We can learn a lot from just nature. The student asks, "What about atheists? Why did God create them; what can we learn from them?"_ _And the teacher responds, "Atheists teach us the lesson of true compassion. When an atheist does something good, he is not doing so because of religious teachings or fear of divine punishment. He is doing so because he is truly kind. So when you see a suffering person by the roadside, do not say "I pray God will help you." Instead, become an atheist. Pretend there is no God, and say "I will help you.""_ Think whatever you want about that story, it's better than this fucking movie

It’s especially telling that the “writers” didn’t do any research (and likely didn’t get actors that are Muslim or know about being Muslim) when making this. The girls scarf makes literally no damn sense. A “hijab” is a single cloth you wear around your hair that shows your face. A “niqab “ is two cloths, one to cover the hair and one to cover the lower face. Why on earth is she wearing one cloth to cover her whole damn head , face included? Also, it’s weird her “scary Muslim” dad makes her wear the scarf but is fine with her wearing a t shirt.

I'd like to see a Christian movie where, four years after the rapture, Jesus must hunt down the Anti-Christ (someone who wants nothing to do with the battle of good and evil) and convince him to help him take down Satan and help him avoid the path he's destined to take. It's like Mad Max, but with Jesus.

Doodle Bug Kind of. In theirs, they made the Anti-Christ the bad guy. In mine, the Anti-Christ would be a neutral party that doesn't want to be involved. He could even have a back story about how he's jealous of Jesus because everyone loves him and he can only do good, whereas he (The Anti-Christ) can only cause death and destruction, something he doesn't want to spread.

I agree. Jesus used subtle and simple parable to pass on moral ideas... but the moral ideas were hidden in the stories so that people who wanted to could seek them out. He never just threw the message of a story right in your face (unless someone asked). The obnoxious nature that the moral ideas and messaged are shoved down the audiences throat is exactly the opposite of how it was done biblically...

I really don't like how they sort of bastardize the whole "God's Dead" thing Friedrich Nietzsche was trying to say
@avypath
@avypath 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as someone who majored in philosophy, this is just downright insulting. "God is dead" referred to the idea that God was born as a way for humans to explain things they couldn't comprehend. "God is dead, and we have killed him," means that, as we evolved, and slowly began to understand more and more natural phenomena, there was less and less that was left for God to do. Eventually, we explained almost everything we once attributed to him, so the concept of God as this almighty being who was in control of, for example, lightning and the movement of the tides, died off. God isn't literally dead: it's just that the idea and purpose of a God is meaningless in modern society.

I do find Nietzsche very interesting, although I'm not really very good at philosophy so I probably don't get everything he's trying to say. Personally my favourite quote of his is: "I have found strength where one does not look for it: in simple, mild, and pleasant people, without the least desire to rule-and, conversely, the desire to rule has often appeared to me a sign of inward weakness."

In uni I took religious studies and philosophy, and shit like this _never_ happened. The religious studies prof never picked sides and never revealed her personal religious beliefs. She did an excellent job teaching every religion without bias. The students sometimes debated during class, but it never got heated. Everyone was civil and respectable. We talked about religion a few times in my philosophy class, too; but again, it never turned into a fight. My philosophy professor admitted he was an atheist, but he didn't cut down anyone's religion. In fact, when a Muslim student asked him why he didn't believe, he said, "I haven't been given any reason to. I could go on all day about it, but it's not really anyone's business but my own. The truly beautiful, wonderful thing about this world, is that we don't have to agree with each other and believe in the same things to live peacefully." That always stuck with me, because he said exactly what I was thinking. Case and point, this scenario would never happen in a university. In fact, in many universities it's against policy to teach with a bias towards any single religious or political viewpoint. When discussions/debates break out, it's the professor's job to moderate, not argue. Professors can actually be _fired_ for choosing sides. This movie, to me, was therefore unrealistic but simultaneously hilarious.

Whether someone agrees with my opinions or not is up to them, but I feel like the movie didn't give people the freedom to think for themselves due to the writing (they wanted people to think about certain people in certain ways). "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." -Romans 13:1 The "governing authorities" in many American states have dictated that refusing to provide service to a singular group of people based on their race/sex/sexual orientation/etc. is discrimination and illegal. So by refusing to provide a service that others are paying for on the basis of discrimination, then they are, essentially, disobeying "God's law."

And his best argument was "how can you hate something that doesn't exist", but that's originally something the atheists have been defending themselves with, after being accused of hating or being mad at god.. So the best argument he uses is stolen right from the atheist. And no atheist hates God, for that same simple reason. The whole teacher character is basically a strawman.. And even when they try to portrait themselves in a good light they are not getting a doctor or calling 911, instead they are trying to convert him.. So tasteless.

In the case of God, you can hate him based on what bible stories have conveyed regarding his character, or the way he treats his "children". You can still see God as a character of some sort, ergo, you can hate him. But that's just my opinion.

@@drftr7735 The term burqa is sometimes conflated with niqab. In more precise usage, niqab is a face veil that leaves the eyes uncovered, while a burqa *covers the entire body* from the top of the head to the ground, with only a mesh screen allowing the wearer to see in front of her. If you used to be a Muslim you didn't know your stuff.

"I think I stopped believing in God when I made a delicious sandwich and its topping spilled out in the first bite. That's the exact moment it all went wrong." Seriously, this shit is just cheesy.

I always tell them some horrid made up story about how i watched my parents be murdered in front of me at 5 before having to live with my uncle who abused and locked me in a basement, where I escaped and have been hiding from him for years. Before saying “just kidding, what happened is I went to catholic school and they never answered the hard questions”
