@@noodlebrains2689 just so you know, ballet dancers generally are not wealthy at all. The median salary for ballet dancers is like 20-30k a year. for the amount of body-destroying physical labor they have to do and the hours they work, that's a pittance. Being a principle dancer at the Royal Ballet would get you more money than average dancers, but that means you'd have to be top of the top of the top. And even at this prestigious level, so she'd get some more money than the average dancer but even dancers at that prestigious level would be making like 200k a year unless they find outside contracts or other hustles. Considering that ballet dancing is so strenuouz to your body, and that your professional career at the top levels basically ends at around 30-40 years of age, you're really not looking at an amazing salary. And, again, these are the TOP dancers of the TOP dancers in the world. Basically, don't lump professional ballet dancers in with people like James Corden and Rebel Wilson, who have very little talent but massive incomes.

James Corden's character turns transparent at one point so you can see the cobblestone texture behind him. The barge cats clothes kept clipping into his legs and neck. There was an actor who's fur wasn't included in that version of the film. Clothing in general, collars etc looked like they were floating around the characters moving in illogical ways. @tomthestone14704 жыл бұрын
Can I get a summary of each musical then?
@AnnoyingMystery4 жыл бұрын
the musical is really something you need to try and see be performed on stage, because the whole charm of it is the actors doing improv and trying to recreate how fucking weird and funny cats are despite being humans just wearing cat makeup and wigs that vaguely resemble ears. The dancing is good too, but the real charm of it imo is the actors doing their best to recreate the experience of your pet cat just STARING at you and never breaking eye contact like they know all the secrets of the universe before abruptly running up a wall onto a ledge and beginning to bathe themselves. The whole point of cats is to imagine what cats think of themselves and their own behavior since so many people have no idea how to even begin to understand why cats behave the way that they do. The poems by TS Elliot did this to begin with, though on a lesser scale, and the only reason we even got a musical was because the poems could be adapted into songs rather easily and become bops.

“Cats” was a smash hit stage musical written by Andrew Lloyd Weber, and ran for 21 years in London’s West End, almost 9000 performances. It was wonderful as a stage show, and whoever thought it would work as a movie should have realised that it was not adaptable to a movie without losing a lot of its character. Other musicals have adapted well, such as “Little shop of horrors” and “Rocky horror show”, but this wasnt one of them.
@MadMax224 жыл бұрын
But what makes it so unadaptable?
@howardmaryon-davis6664 жыл бұрын
eightgateslee20 imho, the decision to use cgi costumes for the actors instead of the original costumes, wasted an existing resource and took away some of the charm. Little shop of horrors did not use cgi, neither did rocky horror.
@WitchBriar4 жыл бұрын
eightgateslee20 probably because some of things Ralph mentioned as issues with the movie are issues within the original musical itself that are only amplified through a different medium. There isn’t like, any plot in the original. It’s just singing and dancing. It’s a live spectacle, where all of the music is just character introductions. In movie format, that’s just like sitting down to watch a bunch of interconnected music videos...which is boring. Therefore you must invent a plot and either cut a ton of the music or squish it all in. It’ll be either a decent movie that doesn’t feel like Cats, or a bad movie with all the elements of Cats that don’t translate well to a screen.
@howardmaryon-davis6664 жыл бұрын
Queen Jorge great comment, yes the original show was a sequence of vignettes each a “story” about a different character, and as such it was disjointed. I am not a playwright or a screenwriter, so how to segue from story to story without breaking the mood... no idea.

The problem is, they're upright, so you have to make a compromise between making them the size of cats standing on their hind legs or cats standing on all fours. Also of course a human head is much smaller in relation to the body than a cat's. As far as I'm concerned the proportions were fine.
@sowohs4 жыл бұрын

OolTube02 a cat can fit on a chair cushion yet the “cats” here are too small look at the chair prop and they’re smaller than the marble steps (ending scene) I don’t even need to measure it. The theatre friends I’ve got have told me that the musical isn’t revered for its story or other hallmarks of his plays, but for the impressive make up work and spectacle. It’s more of a “so bad it’s good” kind of classic to my understanding, and a cinematic adaptation based on a musical loved for that was bound to fail.
4 жыл бұрын
yeah as a theater friend, that's exactly it. "classics" with absolute garbage plots are way more common in theater because doing live shit is hard in a bunch of other ways so you can be impressed by a play and still not "like" it much. Its not that it's "so bad its good" its that the makeup work and the choreography of the original was so good, its worth ignoring the story to see. For another example, Merry Poppins is the greatest show I've ever seen, and I hate the movie. The stage show is goddamn magic though, people walking up walls, doing upside down tapdances, climing out of boxes little girls carried on stage...Genuinely no clue how they did some things and I don't want to know. And your conclusion is correct, because CGI stopped being impressive in 2008 and now people like practical shit again because the effort is minimized with new technology. Genuinely impressive CGI can be done by almost any filmmaker, some just...fail still lol.
@warbossgegguz6794 жыл бұрын
You say that, and yet Rocky Horror exists... Also, as a choir person I can assure you that Andrew Loyd Webber is a hack, so this was never going to be good from a musical perspective regardless of the obnoxious celebrity cast. The only people who "appreciate" his schlock are suburban white girls and facebook moms. That said, I honestly love this movie for all of the wrong reasons. Like, it's like watching a fucking dream. All I can compare it to is something like either a Neil Breen movie or legitimate surreal cinema like The Holy Mountain (more so the former given the incompetence). It's so fucking bizarre that I kind of want to recommend it to people who like weird shit. It's not good as a film or musical AT ALL, but it's an experience. Like, just sitting there wide-eyed, mouth agape, laughing and wondering what the fuck... I'd be more inclined to watch the actual musical if it's this fucking weird.
@graaaaaaaaaaaaaaace4 жыл бұрын
Alec Ferrell i agree, but as a huge fan of cats the musical, i think another part is the characters losing little character quirks. like the musical had little acting quirks mixed in, so a lot of the story was assumed? i don't really know how to explain it, but that was a huge piece lost there.

Not surprised a theater kid feels that way... like talking to the show choir kids all over again. Mediocre singing and even worse acting, _"But hey, look at us move semi-synchronized!"_ If everything takes a backseat to spectacle, I'll go watch a Power Rangers stunt show, WWE, or go to an arena rock concert (probably have better and more complex music). If you can't tell a compelling narrative through the music and choreography, why bother having all of those elements? Sondheim does that well. Menken does that well. Webber's work is stuck in an era where just throwing as much shit at the audience as possible with a slight melody is considered impressive.

i think the most uncomfortable part of the whole movie was when Macavity came back without his jacket or fedora on and he just looked like himself naked with a barbie doll crotch. i felt like i was in a porn theater all of a sudden it was so unnerving. i am urging everyone to go watch the pro shot of the stage show, it is leagues above this and every character is so much more likable.

_The Dark Crystal_ took five years to make. And it's definitely in the top 4 best movies of all time, along with this one. The other two are _TRON_ (the 1982 original) and _Starship Troopers._

@@brandonfoley7519 I just learned that, much like _Starship Troopers, CATS_ is also rooted in fascist propaganda, yet subverting and parodying it. No wonder I like both movies so much!

@@OolTube02 Except that Starship Troopers isn't fascist propaganda, and Verhoeven didn't even read the book, instead deciding for taking a satirical route like in Robocop.

The thing is that the musical IS bizarre and non-sense. Is a bunch of poems stick together to a really impressive dance routine. The physical aspect is the only thing noteworthy. It's more similar to something like Cirque du Soleil than a traditional musical. If you remove that, you have LITERALLY nothing. And if you add scary CGI on top of nothing... Well... And Tom Hooper is a fraud. He's an awful uncreative director. He doesn't know how to shoot a musical. I don't know how people let him close to one after LesMis.
@r.p.47564 жыл бұрын
Nah the poems are actually pretty interesting themselves and the weirdness kinda fits with the musical form. If this play was only noteworthy for it's dance performance it wouldn't be so popular.
@toastysalt71604 жыл бұрын
@@r.p.4756 yeah agreed. the musical has a lot more to it, such as the costume design, the songs/poems, and the stage direction. it is creepy when you look at it a certain way, but it's more surreal than it is nightmare fuel (i always thought the face makeup was pretty). kind of like performance art. in a way, you're always aware that the cats are just people. i have NO godly idea what was going on in the VFX department for this film, but something went wrong. we were never meant to see these creatures in the flesh. what bothered me most was the complete, but not quite, lack of clothes on the cats. i felt violated watching it.

also i have no opinions on tom hooper (i think he directed the His Dark Materials TV series? which I love but it's not the same thing as movie direction; both The King's Speech and Les Mis were boring to me) BUT now you got me imagining a recreation of Les Mis where they're all horrible naked cat creatures
