The new-generation Ram 1500, the DT Series, has arrived.
This modern utility vehicle has a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, a versatile load space, plenty of driver-assist tech and it's able to tow 4.5 tonnes - all of that in a premium package.
This is a prestige ute if ever you've seen one, but does a luxurious full-size pick-up truck deserve the attention of Aussie ute fans?
We tested the top-spec Limited variant over a week to gauge its suitability for Australia.

I own this truck and it’s awesome. 48k miles and I paid $14k under the sticker. With the straight V8 I get 17-22mpg. Everyone loves to ride in it. It’s handled all kinds of weather and is easy to drive given it’s size

Falcon got really big from XR onwards and stayed that way right until the end of FG X, 51 years, the Commodore can only claim around 29 years from VN to ZB, while Magna and then 380 were smaller compared to Falcon but a touch bigger then the VK to VL series Commodore and then VN to VZ were around the same with Magna while VE grew and 380 was Camry size. But yeah that was a different era of vehicles, I would include Kingswood but really how many remember Kingswood or the good ol Chrysler Valliant or even the Leyland alternatives from the 70's.

These things really make our Thailand utes look like an embarrassment. They have no storage, tiny engines, tiny tubs, everything’s just the bare minimum yet it’s all we get so people are buying them. The American utes are the complete opposite Bulk amounts of room, bulk amounts of storage Powerful engines, huge tubs huge towing capacity. If only RAM or Chev started producing them in right hand drive the prices would drop at least 20 grand in an instant

Interesting review by Australian Expedition Vehicles "was posted by Australian Expedition Vehicles back in June .... "As an approved person engineer, AEV has been swamped with requests to provide a GVM upgrade post registration to RAM 1500 vehicles. It is not good news. These vehicles have a stated GVM and GCM from RAM. GVM= 3450kg GCM= 7237kg FRONT axle Max load= 1770kg REAR axle Max load=1770kg Total = 3540kg is the maximum that can be certified on these. Note the sales pitch has a 4500kg Max Brake Tow Capacity. Real towing is= 7237 - 3450 = 3787 kg At Kerb weight of these vehicles are 2605 kg. That's only measured with full tank of fuel and no driver. So with a 4000kg van with a ball weight at 10% = 400kg + driver plus full fuel, these are nearing overmass. Another known issue is the factory rims are only rated to 885kg (1950 lb), so restricts them from reaching their full axle mass. AEV has undertaken a full ADR 3505 for a 10% GVM upgrade to 3750kg ( which is for Vehicle Category NB1, medium goods vehicle) brake test on factory brakes and tyres. The vehicles failed the component test at full GVM for the 20 stops from 0 - 60 kmph. Brakes at 530° C. So please do your research on these vehicles. They are not suitable for a GVM upgrade of even 10%. Jmacx offroad solutions is working on a SSM GVM to 4200kg, but will require brake, rim and axle strengthening. Link to brochure from RAM Australia. www.ramtrucks.com.au/download-brochure/" I guess the lesson here is to make a detailed investigation and don't take the sales pitch as gospel"

People may criticise it for its size, but truth be told, it's the ultimate family vehicle imo. Large enough for the whole family comfortably over large trips, cameras are a big help in tight spaces (though it's not as big as it looks), and being a 4x4 ute with diff lock there's not a lot it can't do. Would def buy if it was in the budget.

This is brilliant. Love the Rambox. Saves it flying around in the back or tub. Downsides, Australians want bigger cars, but our facilities are getting smaller. Westfield's carpark, garages only just fitting a normal dual cab (without bar work), new suburbs street are narrower now, etc. So, if I get one of these, I'll need a smaller car to drive in the city or do the groceries. It's the car 90% of males want, but all end up sacrificing to a mid size dual cab due to size, running costs and price.

i have had mine for over 4 weeks now and love it. Changed out the exhaust to a Borla Atak as the standard system was so disappointing. Changed out the tyres to 305/70/20 to eliminate gutter rash. I drive it in Melbourne peak hour and park at in an underground car park with no worries. Best vehicle i have had. My last car was a 2020 Range Rover Sport SVR and i would take the RAM over it any day. It has also handled well at Stockton sand dunes and also off road through Wombat State Forest (Vic). I hope to order a TRX to take it to another level next year.

Aussie living in the US here. I've owned my DT Ram 1500 for a couple years now, I love it and it is more comfortable than my old X5. I use it as a daily driver in San Francisco to see over the prius's & tesla's. It is the most comfortable ute I've ever been in and good off road, however on track it is very heavy, long and not particularly nimble - I wouldn't be able to take it the places I went in my old 94 Hilux diesel. There was an intention during the F-150's development to have it easily converted to RHD, but at the moment Ford is selling every LHD one they can make - with a waiting list that is now bordering on the ridiculous. Same with the new Bronco. And with most development resources devoted to electrification, there is simply no way Dearborn will approve any F-150 for Oz, regardless of how loudly Ford Oz begs.
@351tgv
@351tgv 3 жыл бұрын
I don't see it ever happening direct from factory, the best we can hope is that Ford Australia partners with a local LHD to RHD converter (which is what this is it's not re-manufacturing anything other then the hard interior console and maybe the steering column), there was some speculation that Ford Australia was going to partner with Walkinshaw Automotive for the F150 and Maverick but (throws hands up with the air) it appears that is all it was, speculation. Nissan have capacity for the Titian to be made in factory RHD speciation from Tennessee but have elected not to do it for obviously economic reasons which is a shame as the V8 Titan would work here very well indeed, even better if they still had the Titan XD with "Cummins turbo diesel V8 power"
@351tgv

@@arrowmouse - if the UK get the Electric F150 it would not need to be converted it would just need ADR compliance to be sold as new, that said there is the 3rd party manufacturer compliance (which is what Walkinshaw as do other 3rd party converters) but that is another story.

Toyota will never release the Tundra here in Australia as they make so much profit from Hilux sales which as you prob know are built in Thailand and are tiny. As long as people keep buying Hilux’s here in Australia we will never see the Tundra here. Its much cheaper & quicker for Toyota to ship Hilux’s from Thailand then to ship Tundra’s from their USA assembly factories. In future the new Hilux may get a similar look to the new Toyota Tacoma in the USA, but unfortunately while people in Australia keep buying Hilux’s we will never get anything better. Why would they change something thats making them so much money

@@paythepiper6283 I agree it would be great to see vehicles like the Tundra to come Aus. But its just not going to happen. Ford would have brought their F150’s to Australia years ago, but same situation. They just make so much money from Ford Rangers. So why would they. If they decide to produce RHD Tundra’s it would be a worldwide decision and it would be more based on markets like the UK. Australia is such a small market for global producers of vehicles. To convert a section of their assembly plants in the USA to produce RHD Tundra’s would cost a crazy amount of money and investment. Doing this just to ship RHD Tundra’s to Australia is not going to happen. Australia’s car sales compared to other nations are a drop in the ocean. It would need to be a global production market such as Ford has done to the RHD Mustang

@@user-qm5fn6hq6k Difference is Ford Does not have any existing rhd drive Platform as Toyota does with the 300 series Landcruiser. The chassis is a telescopic type that underpins the Prado, Landcruiser and the Tundra. Then its a matter of taking what you can from the 300 series and a new body. far easier than Ford trying to build a rhd from basically scratch.

Yes, it would be nice to get a factory RHD RAM which would reduce the cost. But, it has to be shipped here, and then re-engineered for RHD which takes time and money. The conversion is fully Factory supported and approved by FCA USA and I believe that the Aussie conversion is very detailed and complex that it impressed US Engineers so much they said it was better than LHD units leaving the production line.

So based on the exchange rate y’all are paying about $25k over the US price point? 25k for a RHD conversion seems a bit steep but it does look very well done. Plus does RAM not offer the 7 year unlimited mileage extended warranty in AUS? Sure, it’s not free, but it’s a hell of a good warranty.

It's even worse here in New Zealand (The country east of Southern Australia), we get our Rams/Chevys imported from them. Out the door, a Ram Laramie is just under $150k, Ram Limited is around $180k, and a Ram TRX is north of $240k (all NZD). AUD and NZD are almost the exact same...

I own a ram 3500 long bed, so a bit bigger than the one in the video. If you don't plan on using the truck as a truck all the time, then don't bother. The turning radius compared to a car is abysmal at best. Horrible fuel economy, I get 19.6L /100km in the city. Good luck finding parking anywhere in the city. It is great for towing and hauling though.

Rims bigger than 17 inches just make things harder for truck drivers that want to do truck things. You need the extra tire to get over obstacles and rough terrain. You're just asking for a slow leak or blow out with those big stupid wheels.

@@15harry1561 yeah true,. But some people who can afford like with big ranches or big boats will buy this kind of pick ups. In America even low income will buy F150 than a Hilux SR5 or ranger. Problem here is overpriced when they come. Import tax, conversion to right hand to left etc, which Australians dont want to pay. If we disregard the price I assume people will pick this bigger pick up.
