Marion my prayers are with you and especially your wife. Health is wealth. Up here in Canada I plug my 2015 Cummins Laramie whenever it's cold enough that a sweater ain't enough. For me low 40's. Then it stays plugged in below freezing. For warm up I take it slow till the block is over 130f. Can't wait for your next video, have taught me a ton. Adios Amigo !

Take that coolant all the way, I just did a Turbo actuator install and drained all my coolant. It was clean and serviceable. Then there is disposing it. I think it is 150k miles or 10 years. I had 9 years and 117K. However I did go ahead and change it and note it in my log book. Just drain it into a nice clean rubber made tub that can hold 22 quarts. I used the Mopar concentrate and diluted with distilled water. 3 gallons of concentrate and 3 gallons of distilled water yield 24 quarts of coolant designed specifically for your rig. If you really want to do some preventative maintenance, replace the lower radiator hose assembly with a quality hose, and install an after market all aluminum radiator.

I'm up here in Alberta, in the winter we can hit temps as low as -35C, which is pretty common. I don't have a grid heater so I have to plug in. I only let my truck warm up to 60F and take off slow and keep it easy till I hit 100F. My truck is fully deleted. Cooling down, I always make sure my EGT's go under 400F. Usually 350F or so. Hope you wife is doing well.

Hang in there, Mr. Blair. Best wishes to your wife. My 2018 deleted truck is slower to warm up in the cold, but the coolant temp rarely goes above 201F towing in the hot weather either. Everything is usually a trade-off. Looking forward to that transmission fluid change video from you.

Excellent advice on letting the turbo speed settle before shutting off the engine. It’s really a good idea to run at high idle for about 30 minutes after a long drive or tow, to let the coolant and fan pull as much heat out as possible before shutting it off. Once you shut it off, everything is going to contract as fast as ambient conditions allow it to. Letting a diesel run at high idle to warm up or for parking is far superior to base idle. With a dpf and scr, heat is your friend. High idle warm ups and parking will lower the amount of regens considerably. If you have an automatic trans, watch your trans temp when idling in park. Set your parking brake and put it in neutral. If the temp drops, the pump isn’t turning in park. That’s pretty common. The 68rfe is that way. So is the 545rfe in the 1/2 ton Ram.
@jerrysolonsmith8471
@jerrysolonsmith8471 Жыл бұрын
New-guy question here....why does trans temp matter idling? Or did you mean to cool it after a long drive?
@thehappytexan
@thehappytexan Жыл бұрын
@@jerrysolonsmith8471 that’s a good question. Trans temp matters no matter what the vehicle speed is. Temperature is what kills the fluid and it’s additive package. Fluid that’s been broken down from high heat while idling is just as bad for a trans as fluid that’s been broken down due to a bad fan. Some vehicles do pump in park. A little google research will give you the answers your looking for.

Hello Marion, Great Video. Here is a tad bit of info on my High Idle for a 2021 Dodge 2500 4x4 with a 68RFE and 6.7l Cummins. Idle-Up Feature The driver-controlled high idle speed feature will help increase cylinder temperatures and provide additional cab heat, however, excessive idling may still cause the exhaust aftertreatment system to not properly regenerate. Extended periods of idle time should be avoided. The Idle-Up feature uses the Cruise Control buttons to increase engine idle speed and quickly warm the vehicle's interior. STARTING AND OPERATING 1. With the transmission in PARK, the parking brake applied, and the engine running, push the On/Off button to the ON position, then push the SET (-) button. 2. The engine RPM will go up to 1,100 RPM. To increase the RPM, push and hold the RES (+) button and the idle speed will increase to approximately 1,500 RPM. To decrease the RPM, push and hold the SET (-) button and the idle speed will decrease to approximately 1,100 RPM. 3. To cancel the Idle-Up feature, either push the CANCEL button, push the On/Off button, or press the brake pedal. Hope this helps and hope all is All OK with your wife.

@Longsnowsm
@Longsnowsm Жыл бұрын
Thank you sir, this is helpful. Figuring out the balance of how long to run the truck before taking off so that the truck is running most optimally during that warm up time has always been a point of confusion as there are lots of ideas. I had always just let my diesels sit and idle for a while before I left, but sounds like that was probably not the thing to do. Hope things are going well for you and your wife. Take care!

Yes, it’ll warm up quicker with moderate driving. Just give it a minute for oil to circulate up to the top of the lifters etc.. If you do a lot of short trips, like 5 miles or so, I’d charge oil more frequently, like less than 4K or 6 months. It gets contaminated by blow by when the engine is cold. If you drive a lot of short trips, take it out on the weekend for a 30 mile drive and let it burn off some of the contamination from the shorter trips.

Up here in Wyoming winter , I fire the truck up let it idle a minute , then I have a half mile to the pavement I do about 15 mph to the highway, then I ease on the highway easy and let ot slowly get up to highway speed. I drive like an old man , well I am old. In winter my goal is to not let the turbo hit boost until the truck is good and warmed up.

I have a 2011 6.7. Fully delete 4” straight pipe sounds great like you said. But does take for ever for my coolant to get to 200 degrees. I don’t have a way of viewing oil temp. So I just watch coolant and trans temp.

My 2018 Ram 3500 oil temp is always 122. Degrees on cold start up. It is never lower than that. Oat can be 30 or 95 outside and oil temp on cold start is always 122. It starts to rise when coolant temperature gets to 162. Can you explain this. I researched that the oil temp indication is not supplied to the dash by a temp sensor but is computer generated based on coolant temperature.

In regards to cranking and immediately taking off. Had a few guys running our work trucks complaining the transmission seem to pop them forward everytime they tried to drive off after starting. Well they were doing exactly that. I think the transmission needs a few seconds to get synchronized.

I turn the 12 valve on and let the exhaust brake load it, 400-500 egts. It's cool to watch the rpms just drop and it idles very low as it slowly warms up

Hey Marion I have the G56 manual so it has no high idle function accept for a software function that puts it at high idle in 50 degrees Fahrenheit. What I found was that if I engage my full exhaust brake function it warms up in 1/4 the time and I bet it keeps those exhaust temps up! I live in Michigan so I use the 5w40 year around.

You can add the manual high idle to your truck. Lots of info out there on it. There is a wire under the dash that needs to be grounded and then the dealer needs to enable high idle with their scanner. I did it on my 07 g56. I have high idle through the cruise control just like the autos do now.

@@Jon-O. The “wire under the dash” mod won’t work on a 4th gen. But It can be added with a tuner. Or, as I did on my 2016, add the BD Diesel high idle kit . The disadvantage to the BD kit is that the exhaust brake can’t be applied for faster warmups. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKaug3h_qMx2qas

I switched to def platinum and noticed that My truck went longer without needing more for awhile. I also noticed a slight bump in mpg and overall the truck just felt different. I drive a 2013 ram 3500. Also was wondering if you had any tips or maybe potential video ideas on the way you engage traction control or the differences between using the automatic and manual exhaust brake settings. You’re channel is awesome! Thanks.

In Colorado with a 19 2500 and I remote start the truck, kiss my woman, grab my lunch and coat etc and go out to truck. After 5-10 min or so it’s already very warm from high idle and I do plug it in when it’s into the 20s. Always let it run when cold start for 3-5 min b4 leaving anywhere. It’s not that long but I feel better about taking my time.
