Go Cummins. This is why the 6 cylinder outlast the rest.

I purchased my first and only diesel pickup when I retired in 2019. I looked at used and new and researched for a good year before settling on buying a brand new base model 2018 Ram tradesman crew cab Cummins with the fifth wheel package. I had all of the right upgrades done and had the trans upgraded and studded the motor at 9k miles. I could not be happier. Great fuel mileage and tons of torque. I always run the exhaust break, good for the turbo and love the sound. My def tank stays full.😉😉

Like those "Mr. Blair ride-a-longs". I noticed on the last few fishing trips to the outer banks of NC, we counted the number of Ram trucks with the Cummins (5.9L and 6.7L) and it was about 40% Ram at the boat ramp parking lot. The boats and trailers are bigger out there where half ton trucks would not always get the job done easily (this is not like the smaller lakes with smaller boats). You will see the occasional half ton truck hitched up to the 9-10k lbs boat, but that's when we stop what we are doing to watch for entertainment. :).

The older trucks were v motors. The movie maximum overdrive had a truck with the green goblin face in the front. It had a v8 2 stroke diesel. I worked at werner enterprise and I was at the museum they have a v16 Detroit 2 superchargers and 4 turbos. I noticed the new motors can make more power from a stright 6 than a old v16 2 stroke

Just recently found your channel. Like you, I researched the diesels before buying a new 2014 Ram 3500 ST. Love my truck and it now has 95,000 miles and has always brought us home. I pull a 11,000lb Reflection RV and live in Denver. During the travel seasons in Colorado and other Rocky mtn States, most of the driving is usually at higher altitude, usually 5000 ft and above. Diesels are the best at pulling in this state. However, as you go up in elevation air density starts to drop off and engine performance will follow suit. For all you Ram Diesel guys look at the Banks 50 state legal Monster Ram Intake Manifold. This manifold helps all of us High Altitude guys out by bringing in more air flow at over twice the stock manifold numbers. It removes the problem grid heater that chokes the air flow by over 50% and the dreaded bolt that can burn off and drop into cylinder 6. It is replaced with Banks own intake plate with a much larger opening and no restrictions. The intake Horn is also much larger as well and incorporates its own heater coil and all the stock EGR system hook ups. Just had it completed in my truck and what a difference. I can only imagine what it will do at lower Altitudes with higher air density. Thanks, Marion for all your information on the 6.7 Cummins. You have provided us all with a lot of great DYI information.

Australian here. Australia is the land of the inline 6. When holden started production here in 1948, they made I6s only until around 1968. When Ford began making the Falcon here in 1960, it came with an I-6, not the 260 V8 the American version had. I could go on but most Holdens, Fords, and Chryslers sold here had I-6s. Back in around 1990, I wanted a Falcon from the early '80s and it had to be a V-8, not the 250 I-6. I bought one with a 302 Cleveland (I bet you didn't know there was such a thing), rebuilt it, and sold it a few years later. Around 10 years ago, I wanted a Ford Econoline (never sold here so had to search online and import one) and it had to be a V-8, not the 300 I-6. I bought an '88 model with a 460. Why did I want a V-8 both times? Purely for the sound they make. That's it, end of story. I know very well that an I-6 is better in every way than a V-8 but I just can't stand the sound they make and the worst of all are the Cummins diesels with those ridiculous gaint exhausts that some Ram owners fit. I couldn't stand to listen to that all day. If I ever own another I-6 it'd have to be muffled to the extent it sounds like a Tesla. I'm building a hot rod at the moment and for a while, I considered a Ford Barra (the ultimate I-6 engine) but for as good as they are, I decided I just couldn't live with the sound it'd make so I changed my mind to a Ford V-8. I was going with that until a friend of mine gave me an engine he had that he said he'd never use. It's two I-6s on a common crankshaft, from Coventry, England. If there's one design that's better than an I-6 it's a V-12. Twice as many moving parts but perfect primary and secondary balance and they sound great. As for room in the engine bay, mine is out in the open so not a problem. I've always had a thing for V-12s but I never thought I'd own one.

Marion, you are so correct especially about looking under the hood of both a Chevy and Ford diesel powered truck. That's one of the biggest reasons I bought my 2014 Ram with the "Kiss" engine under the hood! It's much simpler and easier for me to work on compared to other brands.

Marion, I would also add that the I-6 has a cold side (intake) and a hot side (turbo, exhaust) - this makes the engine more efficient (intake stays colder). When you have a turbo in between the heads on a v8, it heats the intake air more, and makes it a pain to work on. When I worked diesel engines (now I do hydraulics) I was always impressed on cummins parts quality vs Detroit, international and others. Cat engines were quality too.

One simply has to look at a 4.3 on an engine stand next to any diesel and see the enormous size. As far as half ton boys go the 4.3 is still magic, light as hell, ramps up quick, naturally aspirated, old school compression specs! Put it in a High Country Package to clear the snow. But for heavy Tow Cat made a 3208 maybe that was V-8 and solid to.

My 6.7 dually will pull my 18,000 lb fifth wheel up a small incline without throttle, just let off the breaks and it goes. My father had a straight 6 gasser ford , three speed manual on the column,,, wouldn't go that fast, but could pull anything as long as you put enough weight on the back tires to keep them from spinning out.

Head gaskets and pistons I've not seen a good v8 diesel since either... including the powerstroke and duramax. I can't explain the metallurgy but they just can't maintain over time. The drivers that gravitate to the powerstroke and the duramax are the type that look at unloaded driveability which is snappier etc. more like a car.... that's not how truck engines work.
