Shot at his home in Maui in 2005 (8 years after a stroke left him with a number of health issues), Ram Dass talks about how we first see ourselves as separate from each other but eventually we realize we're not separate. In fact, we're all the same awareness. Explore more from Ram Dass: www.eomega.org/...

Is there any difference in Awareness and Consciousness?
@poutinez1688
@poutinez1688 9 сағат бұрын
Awareness and consciousness are related but distinct concepts. Consciousness generally refers to a state of being awake and capable of experiencing sensations, thoughts, and perceptions. It’s often considered the overall ability to be mentally present or sentient. Awareness is more specific. It refers to the focus or recognition of something within or outside of oneself. You can be aware of your thoughts, surroundings, or feelings. Can you be conscious but not aware? Yes. You can be in a conscious state but not aware of certain things. For example, while daydreaming, you might be conscious, but unaware of external stimuli, such as someone talking to you. Another example is automatic actions, like driving a familiar route without paying attention to the details - you're conscious but your awareness of the driving itself might be low. Can you be aware but not conscious? Not exactly in the typical human sense. However, some phenomena, like certain reflexes or automated bodily responses, involve a kind of awareness (such as responding to pain) without involving full conscious thought. But this isn’t awareness in the full, self-reflective sense. In deeper states of unconsciousness, such as during sleep or under anesthesia, you wouldn’t be aware in the typical sense. So while they are closely related, consciousness is more general (being awake, having experiences), and awareness is more specific (noticing or focusing on something within that conscious state).

I met Ram Dass for the first time last month. Looking into his eyes was like looking thru the universe. He spoke at a seminar and did a great job considering the effects of the stroke he suffered 8 years ago. He was funny and coherent, it just takes a little bit for him to express himself. Listen with love and patience.

I was on a quest to find the meaning of life and I found the Journey of Awakening book and a meditation tape by Ram Dass and I have to say it's amazing. He has spent to long trying to find the alternative to science at finding out our reality and he used so many sources for quotes that he's very interesting. Even though I believe in science, Ram Dass gives me another view to the meaning of life that I believe.

I found this very helpful. I appreciate ***** for the WARNING: though I scrolled down to look at comments like I usually do after watching KZbin videos. The irony in all of this is... I searched this man after a friend gave me his name because I have been having a hard time. I have watched my mom suffer a horrible stroke at the age of 55. I had no clue this man suffered from a stroke until reading the comments. So the little synchronicity just in that gives me hope... though I would not send this exact link to my mom due to the comments under it. She has recovered from her stroke...but she has brain damage and horrible depression. She's been wanting to visit the monastery we have in town to practice Mindfulness and I felt this man could be very helpful to not only her but to myself. I thought his voice was very calming. As far as getting a little confused on the miles in the end of video.. that could happen to anyone...but he is elderly and has suffered from a stroke. My mom is brilliant. She was having her second stroke trying to convince me she was NOT having another stroke and answering questions correctly to Jeopardy all at the same time. I also wonder why the rude comments were made if the people who made them actually came here for the same reasons as I did... to listen to a man who teaches compassion and mindfulness. I guess I am a little confused as to why mean people would be watching this video in the first place.

Alot of the stuff he says, people may say "yes we know that" - with all the information we have, access to religious, philosophical ideas, our understanding of science, use of mind expanding drugs/meditation what have you - but to be such a totally cool dude 100% of the time is really special. If I have a stroke, I hope I am as lucid as this fellow afterward (to say most people are not is an understatement!)

THIS is human! superhuman! because he tried to stop pretending being something holy as people wanted to see him. he was a funny entertainer, but like a clown: laughing outside but very very sad inside. and his SADNESS is touching. i love ram dass for going THRU deep emotions. he loved life, he wanted to understand universe and life, and he did HIS best!!!

I met (Richard ) on a school ground in Maui in 1987 while on vacation with my husband. We were waiting there for the school to open so we could go to a Ram Das lecture. His work with "Death & Dying helped me so much. I hadn't seen him before-all of a sudden this really cool, shaven, extremely friendly guy comes up to us and we all talk for awhile. The lecture starts and now we realize we had been with the Ram!!Great, amazing talk ! If you didn't grow up with "Be Here Now"- you missed out.

Ram Dass changed my life in my mid twenties. Years later in the movie "Fierce Grace" a couple was reading a letter from Ram Dass. Their daughter had been murdered and he was consoling them. The couple were the parents of a friend of mine. I had no idea that he had a sister that had been murdered. A few days later I was in a pool hall with someone and I told them this story and I said next time I see my friend I'm going to give him a big hug. Five minutes later he came walking in. I was perfect synchronicity. Needless to say, I gave him a big hug. Thank you Ram Dass for everything.

@kelstatheone I'm 40 and pretty much the same except that the anxiety you speak of is only because of the society you live in now. I agree with live clean but unless you have explored within I really don't think you have fully explored what it is to be human. For example many if not all of the individual's running things today are 'clean' yet are morally corrupt. Like a virus, destroying their own kind with lack of empathy.

I've worked with stroke victims. This is actually really good speech therapy results and shows his hard work. No I do not believe that what you are trying to make a correlation with, ie; brain trauma and psychedelics are part of each other. One is caused by heart disease, and brain deterioration is caused by not using your brain. Perhaps you would like to enlighten us on that point.

Sorry but you're beyond the reality. Friends and I have seen Ram Dass from the 70's on and none have ever been solicited for money, asked to join some spiritual club, offered special guidance or heard others put down for honest thought. Which leads me to believe you're operating out of a background of paranoia. If you're worried about some "skull and Crossbones" (That's supposed to be a Yale thing) ask Ram Dass. Don't go spreading rumors based on paranoid imagination, yours or others.

I know it seems unfair from a human standpoint, but I've heard this from many other spiritual teachers (though not about "people on the street"). We (our souls) pick our birth & death dates, parents, lovers and key people in our lives. We learn certain lessons in each lifetime. People who get killed made an agreement with those who kill them. Both will learn from the experience. The key is to remember the LESSON. Check out "Many lives, many masters" and "Same soul, many bodies" by Brian Weiss.

Ram Dass spins an elegant web - its simplicity creates so many dimensions, so much "otherness" that we can get lost in it. But if we can (are able to) allow our "selves" to follow his "set" through and beyond the dimensions we may reach "awareness." Check this out.., science, art and "awareness" are coming together on KZbin - Fractals the colors of infinity by Arthur C Clarke

What has nothing to do with spirituality is a hierarchical structure (the church) which exempts its leaders from following any moral code at all (such as abusing children), while making its parishioners feel guilty for some minor infraction. The real church is within yourself. I hope you find enough courage some day to take responsibility for your own purpose on this Earth. Spewing hate and fear is certainly not it.

Its the same energy manifesting itself in zillion different ways,if we touch the stillness within us all the things including the past lifes etc comes into our consciousness,which when transcended the profound aspects of life and death is by choice ! The volition of body+mind identity makes you crave for certain things, action is called karma) which will not die as body dies, the only way to kill karma is to transcend it, life is endless cycle otherwise.So live in the moment(not in past/future)

And what if there is no God? God is simply a belief of many...in many different forms depending on culture, so how do we know who to believe? Each religion proclaims to be "the chosen" religion, if God does exist and is as fair and just and all knowing as each religion claims hi/her/it to be...then he will accept all that come before him/her/it on judgement day, regardless of whether one believes in GOD or not...think about THAT!!!!

Why do you try to complicate that which is so simple? Awareness simply means that we know we exist. We are the only animals on this planet that have awareness. The one drawback to having awareness is that we know we will die. No other animal realizes death. That is why religion was created. Man had a difficult time accepting death so he invented another life to go to in a make believe place called heaven. Most people cannot accept the end of life. There is only one life, this is it!

If he had a stroke, that may be explanation for his speed of talking and the blanc expression at times. So my apologies for that. However the gesturing taken straight from Osho is not a stroke symptom. Having this in mind the way of talking also suspiciously reminds me of Osho and the whole thing seems like a poor Osho fake, despite the stroke issue. To answer the question why I came here-because someone posted a quote from this guy and I wanted to learn who he was.

@wmhoad I don't think he would ever prescribe his teachings as the one true way. In fact, if you read his work, such as 'Be Here Now', you'll see that he borrows heavily from many religious and spiritual sources. If anything he was a pioneer of new age spirituality. Anyways, the new age stuff out there is just a way to introduce eastern philosophy to western people. I guess he seems more sincere, to me, as a person because of the way his life transitioned from being Richard Alpert to Ram Dass...

@wmhoad No worries! I totally understand what you mean about 'New Age' spirituality. It all seems like a scheme sometimes! I'm interested in Ram Dass because I believe he was a pioneer in spirituality for the western world. He was greatly responsible for bringing about the psychedelic movement and the tremendous changes that came with it in the 60's. He helped a lot of people understand what it meant to go through a psychedelic experience.

@jkweddingentrancesux it does seem by saying his words and actions are misguided, that you must have a better answer. do you understand what he is saying in this video? His very point is that we are all the same! Were all in this game together :) Even though this may not be a new concept, it is something that is obviously good to be reminded of. @reivenlocke :) I see there's no middle ground here...lol You say it could either be a result of LSD or a stroke, which totally blows your argument. Just admit, it could be entirely because of the stroke, correct? Also, Why continue this conversation? Are you against LSD use? Hallucinogen use? Why are you trying to prove this point? lol I am almost positive you will not answer me....but prove me wrong :)

@reivenlocke I have to say that it seems quite evident that his 'faculty to articulate' is a result of the stroke he went through...Prior to his stroke he spoke in a much different manner. You would know this if you knew more about the man. You have no evidence, no reference point in saying that anyone who has taken hallucinogens a number of times will speak like him. Do you have proof? At least link some sort of document...

KZbin is really showing our badside...Why do we all choose to find videos that represent something we do NOT like? Why do we all choose to spread hate about videos that represent something to ourselves as a waste of time? Why not choose a video that makes our day better...that makes our lives better? It seriously blows my mind that people actively search out videos so they can get pissed off? Are we going insane?

@jkweddingentrancesux let me guess, you read the Harvard Psychedelic Club? What have you done with your life? To carry a life lived as Ram Dass has lived is nothing to be ashamed of...Lets shine some light in the dark areas of your life and see what we can see. *To anyone who holds Ram Dass's teachings close* - I apologize for my comments on this video, but I am just upset at how people are being so judgmental...

@flutemagick why do people like you try to cut a message like that short? does it hurt to be reminded? Can't you find something better to do with your time then putting down a simple spiritual message? I don't purport to be spiritually high myself, far from it! Yet even before I read any comments for this video...I knew there would tons of hate mongering...I feel more love reading the comments for music videos

@sickandtiredoflife I feel as if your username contradicts what this man is trying to say, haha. But aside from that, the people that disagree aren't idiots, they just unaware of the unhappiness that they bring upon themselves because of their lack of explanation. They don't see this beauty of his words to the true extent that they should because they haven't been revealed to it in a way that will make this understandable. Just accept and forgive them for "They know not what they do."

@TheDrsyd I don't mean to be disrespectful but Ram Das when he called himself Richard Alpert and when he was a collegue of Tim O'Leary did take LSD not only 100's of times but possibly 1000's of times. This is not necessarily a negative thing. I like Ram Das but you must stop thinking that because someone disagrees that they are being, "hateful". The fact that many people today think that disagreement is hateful is a sad commentary on the culture of "Political Correctness".

@GreatBigChangeComin "There are none so blind as those who WILL NOT see". You are obviously not evolved enough to comprehend the messege, which is a sad loss for you. This man was a very sweet , kind and highly evolved soul, it is sad you cannot gain any understanding or benefit from the gift he is trying to give you since your consciousness is so limited you cannot understand it. This talk was given after he suffered a major stroke, but truth of the messege is still beautiful and beneficial.

To MidnightDC696969 Also 1 and 0 are binary, from these so much can be created, they are also opposite,on and off, male and female, light and dark. And i think this is how everything was created like from thought to the creation of matter. everything in this world has math, from 3rd planet from sun, 3 habitats earth,sea,air. macrocosom to microcosom, atoms compared to solar system, the list goes on. how perfect our world is to sustain so much variety of life. Just food for thought...Take care
