I have loved the Ram Jam version since the 70's and heard the Spiderbait version back in the early 2000's here in Australia. I like both, both versions are great I reckon.

"Black Betty" was Ram Jam's only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. You really need to react to the video. It shows the guys hanging out in someone's back yard & jamming out. Love it! "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Not familiar with Spiderbait's version.

Singing drummers that come immediately to mind Phil Collins from Genesis (after Peter Gabriel left the band) and Karen Carpenter from The Carpenters. I prefer the Spiderbait version. Usually, I prefer the original unless the performer of the cover makes it their own (e.g. Joe Cocker on A Little Help from My Friends; and Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower). Although Spiderbait plays it pretty straight the production values make the Spiderbait version sound so much better.

Spiderbait also have a female singer their bass player. They have a roughly 50/50 split of songs, especially their popular songs, but rarely, if ever do they sing together. Mastodon is another band with a drummer who sings, although again, they have 3 singers who all intertwine in individual songs with the occasional rare solo song for a single singer.

Spiderbait did many covers, the other singer is a lady with a very sweet voice giving contrast. I also like the song Run from the Goodies TV show they covered but good luck finding original.

This song is actually extremely old and was originally sang by black convicts it was first recorded in 1933 by musicologists they are kinda like archaeologists but for music it has been covered many many times over the years you can actually listen to the original recording here on KZbin. On a side note that car for me is literally sex on wheels I love it

Spiderbait is Australian, don’t know much more about them. Other drummer lead singers, abeit not the only lead singer, in addition to Genesis, Eagles mentioned already, include Gil Moore of Triumph, Levon Helm of The Band. Roger Taylor and Ringo sang lead on a few too, but none were the sole lead singer.

A decent song, but never a big favorite of mine. Not sure how you haven’t heard it since high school. Seems like it still gets plenty of playtime on classic rock stations and such. I hear it more than I need too. Think I may have seen the video of the cover somewhere, not sure where. Don’t remember the band, though. Glad to see you back. On the upside, when you don’t get something done that you were supposed to, you can pull the “don’t remember” card.
