my dad did this to a ford econoline van back in the 60's. we loved road trips and camping with it. this video brought back some good memories and makes me want to do something similar
@H.pylori7 жыл бұрын
This is great! Just what I was looking for. After going through youtube videos at all of the fancy RVs, I decided that I wanted a less complicated, less expensive alternative. Something to sleep in, boondock, and explore the southwest. I do not want to spend my time with solar panels, dual batteries, gray and black and white water, multiple switches to deal with, let alone leveling. I just want to camp, and KISS (keep it simple...). Yet, all that I could find were the Hymers, Sprintervans, etc. The big thing here is that even a non-mechanical person like me can put this together without a lot of expensive tools and cutting and measuring. Wayfarer did a great job. Forget the naysayers, they will never be satisfied, and they really miss the purpose of this setup...simplicity! Now off to the Wayfarer site for more details.

Nice little set up for someone who doesn't want to go to the trouble. I like the simplicity and I like that it is lightweight. Nicely finished plywood is not cheap and is not even easy to find...at least not at the two big box stores near my home. This is a way to have everything organized and in its place and hit the road quickly.

This is becoming more and more of a popular idea. I have a friend that is a motorsports photographer. He just put together a Ford Transit Connect in similar fashion to serve as his home away from home. He travels to up to 5 races each week so it won't take him long to recoup the cost verses hotel stays. What they have here is a good idea, but they could do some things to dress it up and make it look a little more professionally built. The former cabinetmaker in me screams when I see unfinished plywood edges. I hope they make enough to invest in an edge bander fairly soon. Other than that, it isn't a bad deal and it looks very functional.

This is an awesome idea and an excellent design for quick easy installation. This is on my bucket list now! Two suggestions, thicker cushions for us big folk and maybe an apron that stretches across the two open back doors providing shelter for your cooking? Same magnet attachment would work fine for most things.....and provide a mini-shade canopy. Love it, thank you.

This setup is perfect for a couple trying to see the country on a budget while sticking to the paved roads or maintained gravel roads. Good MPG's of the small Ram ProMaster or Ford Transit Connect. I wouldn't call it a camper though. More of a sleeper to stay the night between destinations.
@jeepcollector918 жыл бұрын
I built a similar setup for my Ford E150 cargo van a few years ago for around $400. Takes me about an hour to install or remove between road trips.
@paulalerose15466 жыл бұрын
$400!!! you are obviously ignoring floor and wall panels and just looking at the boxes. If you don't like it, don't buy it but don't spread negativity.
@avlisk8 жыл бұрын
It's a great idea. If I knew about it 4 months ago, I'd be driving a Promaster City instead of the Ford Transit Connect that I bought and am doing the same thing to on my own. I had to get the SWB Connect to fit in my garage. My advice is to get something longer than I did, which the PCity is.. FTC is a bit cramped and well under a standard 72" bed for sleeping.

Total kit cost as far as I can tell is just under $5,000. So base model Ram City ($20,500) + kit ($5000) + roof rack and box ($600) = $26,100. Not bad, especially given the ease of installation. Compare this to just a small teardrop camper - $15,000 for a nice Little Guy, not counting the cost of the tow vehicle. Plus folks in the suburbs could park this in their driveway and not worry about grief from the neighbors.

Apparently these conversion kits could also be made to fit any cargo vans on the market. It is a great idea of making a camper van affordable quick and colorful. The Pro-master vehicles could sell your idea as well, and sell more vehicles for that matter.

here is another idea and is what I am doing, find a class of RVs that would fit your needs and as you get the money, restore the rig. I paid 5k for a 2001 jayco eagle 26ft travel trailer. I am already working on getting the unit updated, example for the heater, I will eventually replace the stock unit, but then I am going to put in 2 diesel bunk heaters, cost around 3k but then this trailer can be used year round. I would rather restore something then buy new

Great Start to a Great Idea! Now, how about conversion kits for taller vans that would include stove, refridge, a/c, bathroom, etc? The modular idea is great too because the van could be converted in sections as time and money permit.

My guess is this will be popular with folks who have HOA's that say no RV's! On a side note the whole controlling part of the HOA thing is something I despise.
@raysills7 жыл бұрын
Good point. I'm in an HOA community, but my '74 VW camper fits in the garage, so no issues with the HOA. There are a lot of compact RVs around today, but most are too tall to fit into a conventional garage.
@RicardoRoams7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. My condo garage won't take a lot of vans and RVs because they're too tall. This little camper is nice but's a little small and probably under powered. I once had a '71 VW camper but sold it because it couldn't get out of its own way from the small engine and I wanted A/C. VW won't export new campers to the USA so I'm looking at buying a mini van, pulling out the rear seats and throwing some camping gear inside.

They make for better "anything" other than corporate cargo vehicles, that's for damn sure!
@charlotteice57046 жыл бұрын
What does this have to do with VW/Westphalia? VW makes VW vans. Back in the day, Westphalia furnished the vans to make them into technically class B motorhomes. Now, VW does that themselves. But that's why you see Westphalia written on some oöder VW busses. In my opinion, a conversion kit has nothing to do with that.
