We thought you might like a look at this very rare 1966 Mercury Monterey S55 convertible. It's powered by the 428 Super Marauder V8, which was factory rated at 345 HP and 462 Lb-ft of torque. My Dad had basically the same car with a bench seat and a 390 2 bbl. He bought it used in '68 for $2,700. Not as powerful, but it never disappointed. What a car.

Thanks for posting this Jeff . Coming from a family of Mercury owners starting in 1950 I remember these well . My folks had a 1964 Parklane with a 390 that was no slouch for a full size car . They are great cruisers I had a 66 parklane 2 door sports roof, those cars would run all day at 90-100 mph just so smooth and planted to the road, totally a sleeper and the only time you'd want to get off the freeway/highway was to get gas hahaha

I know, I was surprised by that too. I guess they figured they would be driving with the top down all the time and didn't need the air. It really is a beauty though...that 428 is sweet.

Just by looking under the hood of this car, there is a way you can tell this car was built for the 1966 model year, or older. There is a way. Pay attention. Replay this video again and watch for the brake master cylinder. It is a single reservoir brake master cylinder. For 1967 and beyond, newer, all cars had to have a dual reservoir brake master cylinder. For 1966, with the single reservoir brake master cylinder, if any brake line were to rupture or break, or leak, you lost all brake fluid. For 1967 on, if something happened in one line, you still had some brake fluid to stop the car.

dang...that one is a stunner. so glad the car made it out of the 70's and 80's with its engine intact...a lot of full size cars lost their big blocks. my fav mid 60's ford is the 64-66 Tbird, but this is right on up there, esp with that serious FE under the hood.

Nice rare car we never got the Monterey S55 here in Canada just the Park Lane and Montclair and Meteor which used Ford interiors and dashes.

I have a 1966 Merc Parklane with the 428 super marauder with a factory 4 speed stick shift. Almost identical to the S55 but much funner to drive with the stick. If anyone has hear of one with this combination I’d love to hear about it. Mark - Calgary

Nice!! I didn't know the '66 even came with a stick shift option. I did a little research after initially posting this, and it looks like Ford only made 669 1966 Park Lanes in the 428 Marauder trim, so your car is definitely extremely rare. I had a '66 Park Lane with an automatic transmission and the 410 engine with double-barrelled carb. That year's Park Lane also offered a 390. Mine was still a beast even with the auto tranny, I laid down a loooong strip of rubber off a stoplight once in my young and stupid days. I remember how the whole front of the car would lift up when I hit the gas...

I have one of these cars. Had trouble finding brake parts until I found out the ones with front disc brakes use corvette parts. To get the right master cylinder I had to order for 1965 Corvette. Wondering why you call it a Monterey. The model is just S-55 as far as I know.

If I remember correctly, it was always based on the Monterey series, which is all there was in '62 & '63. 66 & 67 S-55's returned and were stand alone models but still based on the Monterey. I wasn't aware of the disc brake situation. That is strange but it figures. Why not take from the best. Do you know when Ford actually produced their own? I love these years of Mercury's. My favorite is a 65 with 64 & 66 running second. Something about the grill in a "65. I also like the X-100's.

It is an s55, with it's own body code, not a Monterey. That said, they are basically a Monterey with a Park Lane interior. All of them came with a 428, with manual drums being standard. Mine lacks power steering also, but it's no problem in Wyoming.

I read somewhere that you can use the disc brakes for the late 70s Cougar on these. I've got this almost identical car in the plain Monterey version so I looked it up.
