Kirk Douglas was the original choice to play Col. Trautman. I think he had creative differences with Stallone wanting Rambo to live at the end of the film. Luckily Richard Crenna stepped in at short notice. I don't know if Douglas would have been too recognisable a star to play the role as effectively as Crenna did. You believe Crenna in the part, because (although he'd had a good career) he's not as instantly identifiable as Douglas.

I love watching the Rambomovies so much and i can’t ever get tired of watching them 🙂. Richard Crenna was amazing as Colonel Samuel Trautman and he made him a likeable character and closest to a family John Rambo has 🙂. I can listen to him talk all day and he has a true charisma and a true motivator . RIP Richard Crenna 😢

Living in NYC I jad a new roommate from Serbia. Total strangers but nice guy. One Friday night he got sorted to go out for the evening and asked me what I was doing. I said "Well I was gonna go meet some friends but First Blood is coming on so I'm staying in." He immediately took off his jacket and said "I love Rambo." Turns out we both knew almost every single line to First Blood and ended up ROFL. Still one of my closest buddies almost 20 years later.

Is the human element,...it's the deep emotion dialogue between the characters in them,..and the worries and fears they face,.... they portray the problems everyone of us face in everyday life ......death, the future.and not feeling worthwhile.....I've grown up to the Rocky & Rambo films over the years, and have been educated, entertained and inspired by both....

Isn't Col Trautman contradicting himself between parts 1 and 3. In part 1 he declares to Teasle "God didn't make John Rambo, I made him", then in part 3 while trying to coax Rambo to join him in Afghanistan he informs him after the tale of the sculptor " we didn't make you this way, we just chipped away at the rough edges". It just doesn't add up.
