My rant and review on the dud of a sequel that is Rambo: Last Blood(2019) starring Sylvester Stallone, Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adriana Barraza, Yvette Monreal, Joaquín Cosío, and Óscar Jaenada.
Directed by Adrian Grünberg.
A shout out once again goes to Nick for requesting this review.

I got the actors who played Victor and Hugo mixed up. My apologies. But can you really blame me considering their characters were so one note and their performances were almost interchangeable? The only difference was that one was more of a douchebag than the other. That's it. Despite my mix up, this film still sucks. Another unnecessary lazy pathetic cash grab sequel that didn't even need to be made.

The only other inclination you get of 'how Rambo met this family' is at the beginning where the camera pans along pictures on the wall/etc. Which still tells us not much of anything and showcases the laziness of this story-telling. It was boring and uninteresting. Boring plot, lame supporting characters, forgettable villains, and a direct to DVD style production. Yes, there is some fun carnage in the finale. Rambo 4 did the PTSD better where Rambo had the nightmare featuring the previous movies including an appearance by Trautman...this was an inconsequential sequel which was not needed nor wanted. I put the first four films in high regard...this is a Lazy entry in the series. Great job on the review, Mike.

I have to agree with you and Mike to the point. When i first saw Last Blood, i liked it a lot more than i do now. I don't hate the film or anything, but man, was it a big disappointment or what. I think it was worse for me because i read the leaked script by Matt Cirulnick months before the film was even finished, and i thought "wow, this is amazing, can't wait to see it", and then i did see the film... I'm not gonna say that we are smarter than Stallone or anything, but i guarantee you, you, me, Mike or any other fans would come up with better version of this story. I think Sly just wanted to make this film more serious and character driven, but IMO, he fucked up, specially with the way he re-wrote the script and removed like 90% of the action scenes (including return of explosive arrows), and added all the drama which wasn't needed. What's even worse is how he ruined all the other characters, like toning down Martinez brothers or making Gabrielle so dumb. I was never big fan of the idea to turn Hunter into Rambo film, but if i was given a choice between that and this ruined version of Last Blood story? Fuck it, let's have Rambo fighting a creature in Arctic Circle.

Excellent rant. Sly's interview made me question why a Rambo 5 was needed in the first place. We didn't even need it, yet the result of Rambo: Last Blood is a complete D.U.D. (disappointing, useless, dud).

I didn't hate this movie, but it really should have just ended at Rambo 2008. That was pretty much as perfect an ending as you can get for Stallone's character. Also, the Mexican Cartel just aren't that interesting as far as villians go, especially with almost every show and movie nowadays being about them.

I duuno man. Arnold did a movie where he took on a Mexican cartel and that didn't turn out too good. I think they used the whole cartel plot because of the whole immigration and sex trafficking issue. Same thing with Terminator Dark Fate. They get an A for effort and an F for execution.

You know Mike, couple years back i would say that we agree to disagree about this film, but not now. I still liked parts of it and i wouldn't say that i hate everything else, but i think if Sly already had problems with the script, then he shouldn't agree to make the film. While i can't defend it, i will always defend the original writer Matt Cirulnick, because he did a great job writing a new version of this story, which at one point was written for fourth film, and i think if we somehow got that version, without Sly's re-writes, this would have been much much better film. Like for example, you said how Gabrielle is dumb for going to her father only to get kidnapped. In the script she is much different character but still very close to Rambo, and she gets kidnapped while she's on a party in Mexico, and when Rambo tries to rescue her for the first time, instead of stupidly walking to the cartel and Martinez brothers, he tries sneaking through their streets and ends up in a big car chase during which he kills some of them, and when he gets cornered, instead of getting beaten up without any chance to defend himself, during the fight he kills bunch of cartel members with his knife and bare hands before they barely take him down and leave him for dead. And from that the entire second half of the film would have been action packed with now fully enraged Rambo taking down everyone working with cartel, and the final battle on his ranch was such awesome action scene, which was more similar to the endings of third and fourth film. That's why i read that script lot more times than i watched the film, and that's what i'm gonna do anytime when i'm having a Rambo marathon, because i'm sorry Sly, but you fucked up. $50 million would have been more than enough to make an actual good version of this film to happen, and trying to make the film more of a drama was a really bad move on his part. Good job with the reviews of all Rambo films Mike!

At 11:12 minutes, this is exactly how I felt. When I heard that Rambo: Last Blood was being made, I thought that his father would play a big part, and actually help Rambo fight the enemies on the ranch. I was also hoping for a lot of dialogue between the two, and learn more about Rambo's past through his father. But Rambo: Last Blood comes along and his father is completely absent. The fact that Rambo mentions his father in Rambo 4 felt like a hint that he may be a main character in Last Blood.

Interesting review, thanks. Rambo's short haircut here was disappointing. It didn't look like John Rambo. That aside, I'm a big Rambo fan so I was still glad he got one last Rambo film after the incredible Rambo 2008. And Last Blood does pale in comparison to the prior films, though I can see the themes Rambo is dealing with in his life, trying to provide justice against varied corruption. In that sense, his last go was bravely fought.

To be honest I don’t hate this film watching it again but it’s still not a good movie it has its moments like the last 15 minutes of the film were epic and awesome and there are some moments I like like the moment were Rambo drops the head while driving was pretty funny and really cool I loved that short moment and Sly’s Acting as Rambo is still good but that’s not enough to make it a great film it’s a disappointing mess the point of Rambo 4 was to end the character in a good note and it succeeded but no Sly is very hungry for a theatrical film so badly. The biggest problem with the movie is that It doesn’t feel like a Rambo film at all until the last 15 minutes IMO there's not that much action and that's one of the biggest problems with the film there's barely any action there's few little bits in the first hour and 10 minutes but they did nothing for me and the last 15 minutes were he gets to be a badass honestly the best scene of the entire film I wish there was more of that if there was more action in this film it could have been a great film if you fixed the setting and the writing and add more action like Rambo 4 but no the film is very lazy and forgettable, the story is very slow and boring at times the supporting characters are very forgettable, the villains are very weak, lame and forgettable again it feels nothing like a Rambo Film just the setting makes it feel more like Taken than Rambo if you change the setting of the film like in a Mexican Desert or a Mexican Forest it would have felt more like a Rambo Film and it could have been a decent film but no Rambo: Last Blood was lame it was nothing but a wannabe Taken but lame version of Taken it doesn’t top Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III at all I would still watch this over Terminator: Dark Fate or Captain Marvel but it’s still a lame and forgettable sequel that wasn’t needed

The fact Rambo just waltz into the cartel like an idiot rather then coming up with a plan and sneaking around like he did in previous films only to get beaten up by the cartel. That was plain dumb...>.> And before folks go all "He's too old at this point". Bullshit! You see in the end he takes out that cartel with no problem as well as how he sneaked around in Victor's house killing him and his henchmen. Really this could of easily been just a 20-30 minute short with the same premise only Rambo was successful in saving his dumbass "niece".
@OcpCommunications
@OcpCommunications 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I forgot to mention how dumb it is that he went in there without a plan but I couldn't cover everything. On that note, why not bring in Schoolboy from Rambo 4? Have him taking it easy in Mexico and he's Rambo's contact from the inside. And he's the one that supplies Rambo with the weaponary he needs to hold up against the cartel. And Schoolboy also tags with Rambo as they tag team their way through the cartel to save his niece.

It was an ok time waster for me. All I wanted from this film was John Rambo still alive and breathing and that’s what I got. So I’m satisfied with last blood even though it really wasn’t needed. I don’t see this as a slap to the face or an insulting sequel because Rambo didn’t die and the last thing we ever see the character do is take a guys heart out. Another awesome ending that’s on par with Rambo 4 IMO. To each their own.

Actually, the script was based on one of the rejected scripts for Rambo 4 from mid 2000's by writer Dan Gordon, and what a surprise, it was actually a pretty damn good script. Matt Cirulnick, who wrote first draft of Last Blood, also did much better job with his script and kept the original "larger than life" Rambo we all know and who in that script tears the living shit out of everyone in his path. But i guess Sly wanted more realistic film, so he changed like 90% of the script in my opinion, and look what we ended up with...
