"In an interview, Rammstein described the music video of "Ich will" as being a demonstration of the media's obsession with a good story, as well as an illustration of the immortality that can be achieved by those who commit wrongs." The Gladbeck hostage-taking (also known as the Gladbeck hostage crisis) was a high-profile crime in West Germany and the Netherlands in the summer of 1988, during which three people lost their lives. The bank robbery with the subsequent taking of hostages began in Gladbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and ended after around 54 hours on Autobahn 3 near Bad Honnef with an access by the Cologne police's special task force (SEK). In the aftermath of the crime, the behavior of the police and reporters was massively criticized and a social debate about the responsibility and limits of journalism was initiated.The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. Among other things, several interviews were conducted with the perpetrators, a press photographer acted as a liaison to the police and a Cologne journalist rode in the getaway car to show the perpetrators the way out of the city centre. The Gladbeck hostage-taking is an important subject of investigation in media system research.Greetings from Germany, you should really check out "Stirb nicht vor mir " (don´t die before I do), one of my favorite songs of theirs, even though it's not very typical of Rammstein kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5fXoGSLlLusnM0

You can look at this video being about sensationalism, and portrayal of people by media. They break into a bank and blow up Flake. All the while, the crowd is supporting them outside and in the end win a film award for the footage of them doing it. You have the little black and white shots of them "dieng" , before the chorus hits, with cameras flashing on them. Representing "death by media". Similar sorta situation to the film "Dog Day Afternoon" , which I think is based on a true story aswell

And this is probably one of my all-time favorite Rammstein songs👍🏻👍🏻 The video is actually supposed to have something to do with the glorification of violence like how criminals are portrayed on the news…like the fame they receive from what they do. I don't think any other Rammstein music video sets the band in scene so well. What fan doesn't see Rammstein as the bad guys, the rebels, pointing the finger at society's problems? When society wants certain topics to be hushed up, Rammstein comes along and scratches at the wound until it starts bleeding again. This is about criticizing the media for glorifying criminals so they can sell themselves better. For the video there is a true background story "the Gladbeck hostage drama", where media representatives obstructed the already incompetent police and therefore people died.
@AlfredSoul2 жыл бұрын
To this day, everyone in the band has a unique look in every music video and for every tour cycle, which includes their haircuts and even masks sometimes; they never look the same. They made it a point for this video though, that every band member i.e. bank robber has a physical deformity (Lindemann's Leg, Richard Kruspe's fake hand, Schneider has a blind eye, etc.).

It's the same over here in Germany. They don't get the appreciation they should get. The majority of people are into mainstream cutsy music (I call it lalala music). Maybe that's one reason why Rammstein fans are so passionate. Plus they still (😒) have a bad reputation from back in the day when they were accused of being right wing sympathetic. It's stuck in people's minds even thou it's gotten better. And yes concerts are sold out very quickly here, too. I will have to go to Cardiff/ UK to see them. Can't wait. If you have some time to kill, check out the making of videos on their channel. They come with subtitles. Really fun to watch and appreciate what they are willing to do for their art. With love from Germany 🤘 😎

Great video guys. My little 6 year old man (my Rammstein obsessed Mini-Till) and myself both enjoyed waking up to it this morning over in Australia. We're both taking the day off work and school today for a rest/bonding day for us as he's having a huge amount of trouble starting and transitioning full time into school, especially being used to locked down at home for so long, and his autism which makes it really hard for him being around crowds and so many people at once. He's not coping well or making any friends and has already been bullied a little. So we're having a mid week break together to talk, relax and chill out. We enjoyed this new Rammstein related video. He had a good old laugh at Matt's mispronounced song titles as usua, and the intentional one of the band name. He always giggles and says "No, silly. It's *insert song name here with correct pronunciation*" Random fact, there was a huge controversy around this video as it was released the day before 11th September 2001, with the bomb and hostages and terrorist like vibe, etc. You guys would probably get a great understanding of most of their videos if you watch the "making of" which they have one for every single video except for Deutschland. All are on KZbin I believe with English subtitles and they have a DVD of every single music video and "making of" to date up until 2012 or 2013, around the same time as their Made In Germany greatest hits album. Only missing the new ones from the 2019 album, obviously..

Great reaction, your faces after the end of the video were priceless! 🤣 I'd say the message is quite clear here: Everything went as it was planned. They didn't want any money from the bank, they WANTED to be caught, Flake WANTED to die and become a legend (noticed his photo behind them in the conference room?)... The worse villains they are, the biggest superstars they become. They simply did a bloody (literally) artistic performance, and now they get the... what? Villain's oscar? 😆 I've just recently seen this video and I instantly fell in love - besides it being (as usual) perfectly executed, it tells really great story, together with strong critic on media, which stick to the rule "the worst the news is, the better it sells". I really love how this video shows that absolutely EVERYTHING in the story is precisely controlled by Rammstein ♥

Actually they don't get a lot recognition in germany. Yeah, they sell a ton of records over here and sell out arenas within minutes. But they are not really in our media, they don't really happen on TV. They don't really go for interviews or promotions. So, they aren't really mainstream celebs here. I think almost everyone in germany heard about Rammstein, but you will find a lot of people that aren't even able to name a song. And when they hit our boulevard magazines sometimes, it's because of scandals, or made up scandals. It's not that they are seen as national idols or something. Some people even feel a bit embarassment, that they are the most successful and best known german artist outside germany, some really don't like that fact. And I bet a lot of germans don't even know. They just have a huge enthusiastic fanbase, following them everywhere. However, I'm one of the fans since the 90ies. 😊

Mat was on the right track in the end. It's about people who want attention and will do anything to get it. Its also a critique towards media giving people who do bad stuff way more attention than to people who do good deeds. One thing the video always reminds of is the Gladbeck robbery. A famous bank robbery and hostage situation in 1988 in germany, where the media got way too involved with the whole thing, trying to get the scoop and even hinder the police that way. And knowing Rammstein and how they like to use real life tragedies in their songs, I think its possible they though of that.

Danke für euren Kanal, in Liebe @all, aufrecht Ralf

They played with the media in this i believe. The trophy they were holding represented the fame and the atention they already got at this point. They toy with the question "Are we as evil as some of the media make us?" There was a lot of discussion at that time if Rammstein was 'right', 'teutonic' ect. So they took the role of the villian to make the media look into the mirror.

Rammstein have taken a lot of criticism over the years for their music and their official videos as well as for their live performances. They're not the bland, mass-produced, superficial music that most people listen to. That type of music has a right to exist and it obviously appeals to a lot of people, just not all of us . The beginning of the video makes sense with regards the band at least, only when you get to the end-Flake is immortalised after his death. The physical "disfigurements", maybe are a subtle reminder that the band aren't perfect, like the rest of us, they're flawed human beings. As others have said, the video itself is based on the Gladbech Hostage Crisis, where the interference of the media resulted in the death of some of the hostages. In the video, we see the media excited to see the band one minute, but then "killing" them the next-people can live or die by what is reported in the media in some industries, your reputation can be ruined in a heartbeat. In part, I think the band are also asking if we can see them for who they really are, hear what they're actually saying and understand it and if we do, then they can't understand why we'd still listen to them and love them like we do. Till said in the making of that if he was a fan watching the band, he couldn't interact the way the fans do, he'd feel dumb doing it. He's a shy guy. Great reaction as always and nice to see that you scratch below the surface, God knows there are so many layers to the lyrics and the videos.
