I saw this back then on TV. These award shows were pretty lame most of the time, but before youtube, it was one of the few places were you could see bands perform live... ok, a lot of them still did playback, but whatever. Around this time I really got into Rammstein and was very annoyed because of the dead crowd. But since they are used to Nsync and friends on these shows, it wasn't surprising. The best part about this show was when Rammstein got their award... they just awkwardly send out Flake to get it, he said only one word (thanks) and then they just went home.

Haha, I totally forgot. Thanks for reminding me! By the way. Once, Rammstein got another award where (i think it was Till) went on stage and said in a serious voice "We wanna thank all responsible institutes" and went off stage.

And when they won the second one they send till out. He was still in his fat suite. XD but that’s Rammstein. They always said thanks and nothing more when they win price’s. XD

@@NeMsY2k It's just a fact that the band has been insulted for years. Yes, they were portrayed as Nazis, which of course was absolutely wrong. But they are from the East, many thought they could.

2005, after a pause of 3 years, Rammstein were honored as best alternative artist and best live band, reacted to the award with few words: "We want to say thank you, but actually we don't feel like it either."

It's amazing that, after all this time, I still get goosebumps whenever I hear a Rammstein song... invariably! Love this song! Great reaction and I honestly agree with both of you Tillevens! Love you guys!

Whenever i watch this live version, all i can think of is, "how hard must it be for Chris (the Drummer) to play those instruments in that makeup?". Especially with those thick arms.

Rammstein ist the only reason, ive watched music awards...they are so unique and never is or will be there a better german Band ❤❤😊

Rammstein simply does not belong there. The echo award usually has nothing to do with metal or rock. The prizes usually go to some pop singer. Accordingly, the puplikum is also there. They only performed there because they won one. For the fact that this is not their audience and they don't really care about that, they did it really well. Was also the highlight of this boring event.

The Echo Award was based on sales. Rammstein is one of the most succesfull bands in germany and absolutly do belong there. They got 10 Echo Awards which is only beaten by a handfull other. But i know what you mean, usually some shit wins because most people only hear shit music.

Rammstein must have come as a complete culture shock to this audience. As for sweating under the suits, yes they do and a lot. It's only their legs and feet that don't have prosthetics applied so they have the weight of the fat suits plus the foam prosthetics from the waist up (apart from Flake of course). Luckily, they're fit guys and the performance isn't long. Takes 2-3 hours for the full make-up etc to be done. They suffer for their art.

I'm probably taking liberties with the translation because I haven't spoken or read German since college, but basically the song is about how getting rich and famous kills your desire for life adventures and your sex drive. Ex. -- I wanted to be with big animals but I had no desire to risk it. I wanted to masturbate but I had no desire to make the effort. I wanted to eat something but had no desire to chew it. Thus the fat suits; a metaphor for complacency

a little. from the way i interpret the song its about over-indulgence. over indulging in something to the point of having no want or desire to do it any more. "ich hab keine lust" (literal translation - I have no desire)

Also a response to the fact that they had been away for a few years - the public expectation that they had taken their money and gone away to relax and get fat. I love that they get in there first!

I think the audience did not know what just hit them. Somehow, because in the German speaking area, they are, or at least where not really loved. I remember the looks I got, when I started to listen to them in 1997. I did not give a sh....😉 Looking forward to what you think.

This is absolute nonsense. This is just not the place for these guys. This is an award ceremony, one usually don't find metal bands. That's why they are completely out of place and absolutely not their audience. The guys fill arenas.

@@TomTomson81 You are right about this show specifically, but in general Rammstein is more beloved in non-german countries. They even say it themselves and are usually amused by it. I even had to convince my mom back in day, that they're not neo-nazis.

@@TheParappa Size and population density must also be taken into account here. Germany is also not particularly large in proportion. It is clear that albums sell more often elsewhere. Do germany tours here are just as sold out as elsewhere. No matter how many concerts they play and where in Germany. This takes less than 15 minutes, then all tickets are gone. And your mother is not a yardstick, but the exception. Those who actually deal with the band and have their knowledge not only about any celebrity newspapers know better.

@@TomTomson81 Sorry, but no. They had to fight the nazi thing for years, even decades. I mean they even wrote a song to clarify they are more on the left side and also played with that image in videos like Stripped. And as for popularity: of course I took population size into account. I don't talk about sales, but how famous they are. Rammstein is germanys biggest band worldwide, no doubt about it. BUT inside germany, in terms of how many people actually know them and can name a song by them, they get easily dwarfed by bands like Die Ärzte, Scooter and probably some Schlager goofballs.

@@TheParappa You don't need to enlighten me, I'm German and I know the band and their history. And if you had read my text correctly, then you could have saved yourself that too. Because as I said, those who really dealt with the band never held such views as the press wanted to portray, because they simply needed scandalous reports. The people who went on this train and believed the shit are also the ones who didn't even hear metal or this genre.
