Hey Mat and Chels. I've seen people debating my translation so I thought I'd come and defend it. The first thing I want to get across is that I'm a bisexual man. So I only used what I deemed appropriate and that's why I felt comfortable using the word and not censoring it. The word Till uses is actually "Schwulah" which is a slang term based on "Schwuler" which gives it a negative connotation. The section of the song which uses the term is echoing cruel words that are used against the homosexual man in the song. A homophobic word is being used in the song to show the gay man as a victim of an attack. The word that I translated Schwulah into was chosen because the English language doesn't have too much negative slang towards gay people that have any form of actual weight to them. Though I can absolutely understand any concerns as I spent a long time debating on what word to use myself.
@StineFL3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with that reading. If the word he screams *wasn't* offensive, the whole power and message of the song would be list, IMO.

I mean, yeah your translation wasnt wrong, but I think a better word to translate schwuler to would be "queer" scince the word does have bad connotations ( it has been used as a slur for decades at least where I live) but isnt always necessarily bad and has been reclaimed by the queer community much like the word Schwuler in germany

The backstory here is: Till lost a bet with some gay friends and had to go clubbing with them back on the day. We all know he's a pretty sexually charged guy, and he observed the 'good' side of being gay in those clubs. Sexual liberity, less wooing, passion. In this song he works through both the good parts and the bad ones of being gay :D Destiny has given him a gift, but he's also the nightmare of all fathers. He's stated several times that he felt somewhat jealous of his gay friends because dating and casual sex is handled more similarily to his own preferences in the gay scene (aka polyamory, no age difference stigma etc.).
@duncanmccann27153 жыл бұрын

That is a decent German translation actually. Most sites just butcher their lyrics. But as someone who grew up with a father and grandparents who spoke German in the household (I sadly forgot most of the language and speak in a WW2 dialect for what I can remember). This song, a bit on the history of it. They had a concert where they invited some of their gay friends to it. And those friends were beaten by members of the crowd just because of their sexual preferences. They then wrote this song, and made this video, specifically to piss off those people who harmed their friends. And to make a point that if you cannot tolerate homosexuality, that they would rather not have you listening to them at all. A peaceful form of revenge so to speak. I actually love the premise, the music, and find the lyrics amusing.

@@Growlizing Same here. I would get very strange looks if I were to pronounce my last name 'correctly' And it was actually only in the last decade of my life that I learned that modern Germans DO NOT roll the R's.. From the memory of my Oma and Opa's voices, especially my Oma, she would do a long roll of the R for a lot of her words, even speaking English.. IDK, she just flat refused to put aside her culture and language.. Never fully became fluent in English and actually forgot most of her English towards the last years of her life. I really want to go travelling around Europe sometime to visit historical sites and see the electronic music/clubbing scene for all I was hoping it would be here in North America and was horribly disappointed by. I am getting very sick of politics here and have fantasies about expatriating from time to time. Until I read about society there and how it can be worse in many ways. As he used the f-word in place of the German word "Schwuler": It should be said, "Schwuler" is in my opinion a little context and tone sensitive and can range from how you (US) use "gay" to a very hateful "f-word". Having said that, it is closer to the f-word meaning in this context. eedit and PS: we have the word "Schwuchtel" which I would (if I had to) translate with the f-word as it's almost identically in tone and circumstance used

Till had the idea of this song after having a cool night at a gay party with some gay friends of him. He wanted after that to do a disturbing song (not disturbing for me but for homophobic people, he he he), a song FOR gays, against homophobic ideas. It remembers me at the high school, heterosexual, but kissing the only (outed) gay guy on the floor, creating a bottleneck, to shock close-minded people and force them to accept other sexual orientation (in the late 70's, hu hu hu). it was funny -- and the guy was a real good kisser, only the badly shaved beard stubble disturbed a little bit :-D

3:58 Okay, that Translation is wrong. "Schwuler" doesn't translate to "Faggot". "Schwul" means "Gay", so that's simply what a gay person is called. And that slur certaintly isn't supposed to be part of the lyrics.
@StineFL3 жыл бұрын
What I love about any lyrics of Till, is that they're rarely obvious, but open for interpretation. The way I understand it, Schwulah isn't an "official" word, but rather a mix between the words for "f*" and "gay". So that alone leaves it ambiguous as to what the intention behind the word is. It makes sense then, to look at the word in the context of the rest of the lyrics. Right before that word is screamed out, he sings of days his heart is breaking, with cold tongues beating at him. To me, this sounds very much like hate. Throughout the song, my impression is that he's out and proud, doing what he likes, but constantly aware of the hate and/or judgment against him (all fathers fears their son will be gay, when a woman makes a move and is rejected, the whole world is shocked and confused). Still, he tries to carry on and not care, but, on some days, it just gets to be enough. Him screaming the f* word in our faces is, imo, his way of really blasting us with all the hate he experiences. This is why I absolutely think that this word is a right representation for the word. It's the impact that matters. Taking away that, takes away all the power that song exudes to me. Also, Till is not known to be shy from expressing himself controversially 😅 that doesn't mean that the intentions behind are bad. Just that he expresses his way in a brutally honest way. Anyways, that's just my interpretation 😂 I respect your views on the matter, and can see why you would interpret it that way. This is exactly why I find discussing Rammstein lyrics so much fun!

Herr (dem Herrn = to the Lord) stands for Mr. or Man/Gentleman Like Mr. Peterson = Herr Peterson as well as Master as Well as The Lord (thank the Lord = danket dem Herrn). It is a word play by rammstein specifically attacking homophobia within the Christian belief/church and the mental conflict of being religious but at the same time not pleasing the Lord. Ich bin der Diener zweier Herrn means i am the the sub/servant/slave of two "Herren", the Lord and the worldly human male partner. Kalte Zungen die da schlagen means Cold (hateful unempathic) tongues hit/beat up by saying: Schwule aahhh (gays ahhh screaming like they are evil, a threat or contagious and you have to run away from them or fight them )
