MMA coach on Movie Fights: Batman vs Mutant Leader, a film study on armbars

Shanghai based MMA coach and professional fight commentator Ramsey Dewey reacts to movie fight scenes. When Batman did a couple of BJJ moves in the animated film “The Dark Knight Returns”, I was shocked, in a good way. The second time I watched the scene, however I was shocked at how bad Batman’s armbar was. I critique what the caped crusader did in the movie, and show you how he should have done it instead.

Lmfao yah I noticed that too. I guess it’s a bit different though when your fighting an 8ft hulk in a mud pit rather than a ring where the guy stops fighting after the match is called.

he actually did punch the Mutant Leader numerous times in the face after he gave him 2 broken limbs. I'm not saying I disagree, I'm just saying Batman treated this brutal man pretty brutally.

@@1993Redemption it makes sense to the story. He knows he has to prepare fighting Superman in the end, so he completely neutralizes the mutant leader forever. It’s also something he learned from the encounter with Joker earlier, being merciful means potentially giving them an angle back which endangers others and even themselves. So this time, he makes sure this guy ain’t coming back.

Yeah, in the original graphic novel he *doesn't* stop. He says to himself, "Something tells me to stop with the leg. . . . I don't listen to it." And he keeps going long enough for the moon to move several degrees in the sky. He doesn't kill the Mutant Leader, but he'll never move right again.

Excellent review! One additional element: This is actually a rematch between the Batman and the Mutant leader and it's the caped crusader who makes adjustments. Specific combinations, such as the mutant leader making a wide, open-palmed strike that reverses into an elbow, catch batman off-guard in the first fight but are anticipated and blocked in the second. Additionally, in their first encounter batman tries his spinning back-kick to the head "cold" but the younger and faster mutant leader see it coming and stuffs the kick; in their re-match Batman stuns and distracts the Mutant Leader with the ear clap before attempting the kick. It's small details like this that add up to a narrative in which the older but more technical fighter manages to overcome a younger, more physically imposing opponent.

In fairness to the movie's portrayal of the armbar, Batman had disabled the Mutant Leader's other arm before he went for it... BUT it was very foolish for him to not use the correct technique and rely on the nerve strikes he'd delivered to keep the Mutant Leader from attempting to escape. Now if only they could make Superman's fights look this good...

Great movie is an understatement it's one of my favorites I love when Batman said "It's An Operating Table And I'm The Surgeon" a reference to jui jitsu "your weak old man your slow " true but we're all slow when were thigh deep in mud "another reference to environment consideration taking his strength youth and tenacity were the odds are more even. Batman detective skills are amazing knowing he would smash the mutant leader without mutant interference had to do with something about knowing the enemy. The whole movie is based off a book and the book gets into detail of what they were thinking. An amazing story of a hero who is clearly vulnerable but smart enough to fight figures that would otherwise be considered untouchable.

Batman had already incapacitated his opponents left arm when he hit the nerve bundle in the deltoid his arm was temporarily paralized because you turned off the volume you didn't him state that Batman knew the Mutant Leader was way more stronger than him so to make sure he couldn't escape the move Batman took out his other arm so it didn't matter if he did it totally correct .that's why Batman broke him down piece by piece because knew he was : Older Slower Weaker and would Fatigue faster if you would had the sound on you would of heard him say and I quote " This isn't a Mud Hole son it's an operation table and I'm the Surgeon" end quote

Batman did dislocate the mutant leader's shoulder prior to performing that armbar. But I believe the style that Batman performed the armbar was meant to separate the elbow. He did dislocate the left shoulder and damage the nerves. Batman explains that much in the movie but yeah, I never understood why he chose that specific type of armbar until I caught the fact that intentionally rolled up toward the shoulder and applied some torque that arm. If I'm not mistaken, you can hear the pop every time Batman dislocates the guy's bones in the fight. Edit: Rewatched the fight. The armbar that Batman did is legit. It's a keylock armbar. Edit 2: I understand why Batman chose that specific armbar after watching your demo of a standard armbar. Mostly to avoid being bitten. A standard armbar leaves the quads vulnerable to a nasty bite and given that Batman's opponent likes to fight dirty (no pun intended), the armbar Batman chose made the most sense. Although, if this were a younger Batman, he would've locked in a full crucifix armbar (this is my favorite armbar). A full crucifix once locked, can be used as a simple restraint against a much stronger opponent or can be used to cause serious muscle damage or break the elbow. Never had to take it beyond the restraint level though and never actually had to fully lock it. I mostly used it while sparring for the sake of demonstration. I always grapple with some level of resistance because I need to be able to validate the techniques and the situations/positions they are most viable from.

That throw wasn't a hop toss. It was an ippon seio nage. One armed shoulder throw. It works by elevating them across your back and over the shoulder than the hip. You can toss someone pretty far with it due to the elevation. Sometimes we miss the creah pads in my judo gym because someone travels at least the length of both person's bodies. Also one more thing on the armbar. At least in my gym they teach us to rotate the erm to have the elbow pointed upward. more pressure on the joint.

@@rvrmdude Also, that is a hell of a fight and the fact that you can hear every pop/crack that occurs when Batman dislocates/breaks a joint/limb is about as honest as it gets. But judging by Batman's age and his lack of training, I'd say that fight couldn't have lasted longer than 10 minutes since he wasn't out of breath or even remotely exhausted.

Ramsey Dewey Great Observation in this Batman, I Honor and Applaud you for Dissecting and Correcting Batman "The World's Greatest Detective" and One of the World's Greatest Martial Artist and Tactical Espionage, Need not give more credit. Batman has always and will be My Favorite Superhero of all times, since childhood and now. But one thing you forgot if you look at approx 3:43 Batman gave a Critical Blow on the "Nerve bundle" of his left "Deltoid" if you're familiar with pressure points, Batman is a virtuoso with it. He was able to bring the Hulk a Massive Goliath to his knees. That disabled his left arm to use it during the fight. And I believe hence is why Batman wasn't really that careful cause he was like "Gee Whiz, If I disabled this man's left arm and I do the armbar then there is no way for him to get out." So he didn't seem to care so much about that,But he should have, which is extremely rare of Batman. Cause Batman never makes mistakes when it comes to his combat strikes or moves. But I guess due to his age, you're not going to do everything accurately and precisely as how you first did it and also Batman's been out of the game inactive for more than 10 years, but that's why you have something called muscle memory. But Ramsey Dewey I still Salute you wherever you are. And I want to see more of this ! This is Fucking Awesome ! My suggesting try "The Killing Joke" animated film. Or maybe Dragonball Broly since that's like the closest that they did in Grounded Combat moves.

Even if that nonsense nerve strike worked, you do not need your arms to sit up and roll over.

I looked at the fight again, I did see Batman's arm's sitting up while he was doing it, but I didn't see no arms roll over. I saw Batman snapped it and then he went for the leg. The only thing I see is the reflex from the bad guy. Now you making Me wanna re-watch the movie HAHA!

I'd like to provide a counter argument to this. FIRST off I preface this by saying Ramsey is ABSOLUTELY correct on the proper application on the armbar and demonstrated it Beautifully! Ramsey also stated that the Armbar that Batman preforms is completely possible provided that the opponent is not intelligently defending himself. So here's my counter argument on why I think Batman's armbar was plausibly given the circumstances: His opponent was not human, but a Mutant with incredibly sharp teeth... The proper armbar in this instance, with respect to Batman's uncanny intellect and tactical decision making in combat (if we respect the canon) Batman would of arrived at the conclusion that the regular armbar would of placed his leg right by the Mutant's razor sharp teeth and could of very well been at risk for serious injury with the mutant who could of easily of bitten into his leg with those razor sharp teeth. I believe Batman made a calculated decision/risk and adjusted his position on the arm bar to keep his leg clear of the mutants mouth. While I am certain he was aware of that the modified armbar was not ideal, it was enough to still get the job done while minimizing injury to his leg. (And yes I am very certain the incorrect armbar was the fault of the animators who drew out the scene, but I am looking at this from a purely "Batman-esque scenarios of what Batman would do based on situational circumstances of combat, because Batman's enemies vary from human to otherworldly at times and as such he would have to adjust and adapt his tactics accordingly.

I love the breakdown, but about the arm bar, I noticed that in your demonstration your opponent was using his second arm to get out of it. I am not sure if you noticed the bit where batman disables the mutant leader's left arm by attacking a nerve bundle in his deltoid.

@@RamseyDewey The mutant leader was cut, bruised, beaten, and damn near dead with a useless left arm after getting the 💩 beat out of him for 5 minutes straight by a guy who can bench 1000lbs while lying in mud. Not the same thing as recovering from an armbar 2 minutes into the 1st round of a UFC fight. You're wrong on this one. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Batman supposedly incapacitated the mutant leader's left arm shown around 3:42 - 3:56. This might be why the mutant leader couldnt break out of the arm bar on 4:30, he couldnt use his other hand. Rewatch 3:42-3:56 with sounds if you watched it without.

I'm no professional fighter or anything of the sort but the part at 6:10 in this video when you're describing what a low tier fighter may do it made me think of the fight you're reviewing here where the mutant leader just took a few sharp hits and he responds with "Was that a tickle?" and Batman says, "That a was a nerve bundle in your deltoid. Might not have hurt but you won't be moving that arm for a while." to which mutant attempts to move it but he can't and begins to slash about with his one good arm. In this instance, I'd say the armbar that Batman used, while not the correct form, I feel is more than adequate since mutant leader couldn't move his arm at all. Again, not a professional fighter, just something I noticed you didn't touch on in your review and would love to get your thoughts on that. Thank you!

I suppose the arm bar tech didn’t matter much in that situation because he had already paralysed the mutant leaders left arm by hitting him in a nerve bundle in his deltoid, which batman said meant he wouldn’t be moving that arm for a while.

@@RamseyDewey im just saying that the leader probably didn't because he wouldn't have been able to use his arm to get a hold of bruce for the roll, he still could have, he probably just didn't think of it because he was getting absolutely thrashed before hand and was panicking lol, still a wonderful analysis though.

Yes, great to see Ramsey's opinion on this! Would love to see him do commentary on: - The first fight scene from Enter the Dragon (the one where people say Bruce was doing MMA before MMA. How true is that though?) - Ryu vs. Fei Long from Street Fighter II: The Movie (Supposedly, real fighters were consulted for this fight.)
