Strapping a dog into the backseat, using a crash tested seatbelt harness (like Sleepy Pod brand) might improve motion sickness because he’s facing forward can watch the road more easily to anticipate movement and get fresh air. Also, I believe that a crash tested seatbelt harness might be safer than a crate in the event of an accident. Think about it with the seatbelt it should restrain the dog from hitting other objects (similar to how humans are rest ), whereas in the crate the dog is going to hit the of the crate and there’s really very little padding there especially if the crate is up against the side of the car and is not allowed to flex at all. The other benefit of the seatbelt is it takes up much less space in the car and home both when in use and not in use.

The crate does look safe, safety is very important...we have a rack between the rear seats and trunk instead of a crate as in case of having to get your dog out of the car fast in case of emergency I think that is easier... As to getting sick in the car, some dogs just don't get over that, you probably tried it already, but sometimes it helps to put a rubber strip under your car. You said you tried pills, which ones? When Kiyew was little we gave her carsickness pills for children, they worked pretty good🐶🐾🐺
@ranchothedog3 жыл бұрын
I'm a little afraid that he's one of those that will never grow out of it :( I've never heard of a rubber stick, just now, I googled it... sounds interesting. Do you think it actually works? We tried some human carsickness pills (vet approved) and those didn't work at all, then our vet prescribed some other pills but they didn't work much either, maybe we should give them another try though. Thanks Cindy.

@@ranchothedog you can find it when you look for anti static strip for car sickness, for Kiyew it did work.

Rancho is not fond of car rides because of motion sickness, poor baby but a comfortable safe traveling crate is important. I like the reinforced fiberglass! Yes! If you want quality, you will have to spend more. You definitely did your homework on the crate. You are both great pawrents taking precautions and making sure Rancho is comfy as much as possible when taking him on car rides. Please! Someone suggest a solution(s) to how Rancho can better enjoy his car rides. 😥😔 We love you Rancho! Love the new Crate, hopefully in due time, Rancho will learn to love it too. Bless his heart. 🤗 🥰💋🐾

Thanks so much Elena. ❤ We hope he will too. He loves going for trips and traveling, just not the 'getting there' part.. poor boy. After reading some of the comments, I decided to try some another carsickess pills, maybe that could work, we just need to be patient. Have a great day 🐾

Nice! Tove has a handmade crate because we had the exact same problem! 😊 I once had a comment of people passing by that I shouldn't lock her up in the car. My angry reply was: Do you put a seatbelt on your children? Poor Rancho, we have no experience with that luckily. She LOVES car rides and her crate. Have fun! 🚙 💜

Exactly, dogs are much safer in a crate. People can't walk around in a car either. It must be great to have a dog that loves car rides. We envy you a bit. 😃

Hi! We have a 10 month old female Terv, and early on car rides were very stressful for everybody. We tried transporting her in 2 different kinds of crates, but in the hard-sided crate she would cry the whole ride, and in the wire crate she ended up always vomiting or pooping (or both). Not surprisingly, she generally hated car rides back then. Our vet thought she would be helped by seeing outside and being near us. So, now we use a hammock-type seat cover in the back seat and she wears a harness and tether. We started out going on VERY short trips and added length slowly. She has never been sick in this configuration. I am happy to report our girl really loves car rides now and is comfortable both sitting up looking out the windows or lying down in the back seat. We go on trips of all lengths, including hours long:) Hope you find a solution for dear Rancho.

Hi, I hope you can answer my message. You mentioned in the video that if varioCage would have had the right size, you would have picked that one. Can you share why is that? They are both crash tested. But is it VarioCage safer? Looking forward to your reply. I’m struggling to pick one.

When our kids were young they would get car sick ALOT. We solved it by buying a strip that secures to the bumper and drags slightly on the ground. It apparently takes the static electricity out of the air in the car if I recall correctly. I was skeptical, but it worked amazingly well. Sold it stores like Canadian Tire.

The crate you choose looks great for Rancho, very interesting to hear about the other two you were considering as well. I hope that you are able to find a solution for Rancho's carsickness. Smudge has grown out of hers, but she still dislikes going in the car from the memory of it. 😊

Hi I am glad to find your channel. I wanted to get Gunnel crate but it does not deliver to Europe. I am glad that you also mention that. Are you an American living in Europe with a dog? I am and having difficulty finding a Breeder, trainer etc near where I live… how did you go about it?

Hi, long time no post from Rancho... Tess had motion sickness too, and it is true... she grew out of it. However, as you state, during traffic jams or especially when maneuvering to park the car in a narrow space, meaning backing up, turning and forward again, she can still drool and/or vomit from time to time... You could try Touristil, if it's still available... our previous dog, Xenna, a GS, benefited from that drug... but she got drowsy because of it so it's not really a win-win situation... As for a dog crate: we don't use one. I created a partition wall - removable - in the trunc of our Toyota Verso which gives Tess about 2/3 of the space, and we still have 1/3 rd of the space to use for luggage... exactly as wide as a collapsible shopping box, and we can stack 2-3 of those on top of each other... very useful for running & mountain shoes and for Tess's gear and food. And she is well trained, so she won't jump out of the car if we open the trunc. Good luck with Rancho's motion sickness... One trick I heard would be to have him lie in a 90° angle to the car's travel direction, such as on the back seat or so... the stomach endures slightly less motion in that angle, they say. Don't know if that's true, but you could try if it changes anything...

Hi, looking for any advice in choosing the right size of crate: My Boot size is a follows Width 112cm depth at edge 89 depth at centre 94.5 From this it narrows down my options. Dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback, 10 months and withers 62/63cm (seems smaller than your dog but doesn't look it), he is relatively small though, around 35kg, and labrador sized, but probably still got some growing to do. I would like to give him the most room possible without totally compromising boot space, and be able to use part of the boot for bags/shopping etc. I think the above dimensions rule out the Pro 3 & 4 large as the depth is 93.5cm So I am left with Pro 3 medium, Pro 4 small and Pro 4 medium. Do you think the Pro 3 medium would be too small and outgrown quickly? If I were to opt for the Pro 4, I would be better going for the medium, as both are the same width, and not saving space in front is not really a factor. As a reference his current (fabric) crate is only 90Wide x 45deep x 57High, so any of the above would be added space for him Thanks for assistance, and sorry for the long comment!!
@ranchothedog2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the question. I think the Pro 3 M might be enough, he would be able to lie down which is the most important thing. Your dog is a little shorter than Rancho but also heavier, Rancho weighs only about 28kg (at his best, and often less). So your dog might actually need a bit more room cause there's more mass to fit into the space. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of boot space, I'd probably go for the Pro 4 M just to give him a tad more room. But I don't think the Pro 3 would be so bad since they say it's up to 40kg. Now it's just up to you. We were facing the same conondrum before deciding for the Pro 3 M. Hehe.

Just a hypothesis, couldn't it be because he is faced backwards. Perhaps the same when we had man's sit in a train and sit backwards. Some people get sick because if the awkward motion. I remember one of my older dogs also got sick when she was in the trunk. When she sat beside me upfront in passenger seat she was okay. I first took her weeks on a leash so she couldn't move all over the place, eventually without a leash. I live on a island so we don't drive that fast, all windows open and she hang out of the window catching some fresh air.

There is hardly any airflow the n the back of a car. Perhaps tryi to ride with the windows opened a bit so there is a better airflow

I bought a MIM Variocage 4 system for my dog because he is also 66 cm high but his head is positioned higher than his shoulders. I hope you understand what I mean, for give me I'm Dutch. So with this system he has more free space of the car to sit properly without bending his head towards the ground. About the car sickness, our new dog a little puppy also suffers from car sickness. He had also some bad experiences with driving in the car and also had to throw up. So the car is a lot of stress for the dog, not the driving itself. So the car must be a place where it is nice. We are giving the dog his meal in the car now every day and we don't drive with the car the coming weeks. I. Hope we can reduce the stress and make the car a place where the dogs wants to be because he gets his meal. Then after a while we can start the motor during having his meal. And later we can drive a little bit but very slowly. So you have to be patient with your dog and take little steps to make him love the car. There are a lot of training videos on KZbin about this subject. You have a beautiful dog. Greetings to you and your family from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

My dog had motion sickness and then I got her motion sickness pills from the vet that I gave before every car ride for a couple of months. After that I stopped giving them and she doesnt have motion sickness anymore. She broke out of the habit of feeling sick in the car. But some dogs need to take medication before car rides for the rest of their lives.

How many dogs do you know that have been in a car crash? Or who have been injured in a collision? I have a dog, same as Rancho, and will NEVER put her in a cage. Dogs aren't designed to be placed in cages.
