Reviewing the Praga R1 at Atlanta Motorsports Park. Respected American racing driver and journalist, Randy Pobst, takes the lightweight, high downforce Praga R1 for a full track test at AMP - and he’s never seen AMP like this before!
The R1 is a full carbon-fiber, single-seater race car by the Czech manufacturer, Praga. Now in its 5th Generation, the R1 is powered by a 2-litre turbocharged engine built by the specialist racing division at Alpine Renault with bespoke engineered parts by Praga, producing 365bhp.
The R1’s lightweight design, weighing just 1418lbs, combined with its advanced aerodynamic package, enables drivers to experience up to 3G of lateral force in corners, all within the safety of a proven, full carbon fiber monocoque from a brand with over 115 years of automotive manufacturing and engineering heritage.
As the number of R1 race cars on US grids continues to grow, in Spring 2023, the Czech brand launched Praga Racing USA as the exclusive authorized Praga R1 dealer in the United States, serving all new and existing US-based R1 owners.

After watching Jimmy & Gordie win in the Praga 2022 series (which I thoroughly enjoyed) with the R1, then the release of the Bohema, it is so awesome to see Praga in the USA with Randy P! Outstanding Vision & engineering that just has to be shared! Bravo Praga!

This is an amazingly well designed race car. Really love the engineering expertise and creativity on display here. And as an added bonus, having Randy drive it is such a great choice. His driving talents, passion for the sport, AND ability to explain things are off the charts.

Thanks to Randy for this cool review. He knows his stuff for sure driving so many types of saloon v. a designated racer. Praga looks like quite the track car. With high down force, killer power to weight ratio and sweet design with central seat and world sports car series vibe. So cool 👍

I race the R1 in the UK, I would definitely venture across the pond when you have an R1 race series in the States, AMP looks like a fantastic track to drive. An excellent review Randy.

I can't even imagine Randy driving the mcmarty Spielberg pure on track. Especially if this made him so tired afterwards. For his age he is fast af. Randy for 4 wheels & MCN presenter Michael for 2 wheels are 2 of the GOAT racers reviewers. I would love to see a head to head between these 2 old but not obsolete racers.

Very cool car. Let’s be clear on one well worn trope though. If a car generates its own weight in downforce at X mph then it’s ‘only’ overcoming gravity at that speed. You certainly couldn’t drive it upside down. You would have to be traveling significantly faster so the car was generating more than its own weight in downforce. A car like this that can generate its own weight at 124mph is a very serious bit of kit!

I remember randy driving the viper acr and he said the same thing back in 08, faster you push it, the better the car becomes on the track.

That is so very true! With the high downforce capability of the R1 the faster you push it through the corners the better it sticks and the greater confidence you feel. The car is more than capable. The driver is the one who must mentally decide to commit.

That's right! The R1's power-to-weight ratio, out-of-the-box, is insane at 0.257. But it doesn't stop there because the R1 can be tuned to 550hp with its Garrett turbocharger. At 1,418 lbs that puts its power-to-weight ratio at 0.388. Any way you slice it, it packs a serious punch and is more quick and nimble than any production car or GT race car through the corners.

The only other time that I've seen Randy on camera having to focus / make such an effort to drive a car was that awful " Faster with Finegan " lowered S10 that had about an inch of rear suspension movement in bump.

Nope. We are growing around the U.S. Many different race series accept the R1 in their prototype class, such as AMP; NASA; SCCA; FARA; PSSA/SVRA

Having the same downforce as its weight is NOT sufficient to drive upside down. That would result in neutral traction for steering, braking, and acceleration. The tires would barely be kissing the ceiling! And God forbid a bump occurs, to upset the ground effect while upside down. Needs MORE downforce than it's weight. One unit of downforce that equals the car's weight, and something on the order of ANOTHER unit of down force to restore the traction characteristics while upside down, that it has when sitting right side up on the ground. Edit- I see a few other people have had the same comment

@PragaRacingUSA having Randy drive your car is a great endorsement, but if you want to advertise your car to motorsports drivers and enthusiasts using the review from a pro driver... 1. Ditch the music. we want to hear car noises. 2. show a full lap from one camera angle or have a Picture in Picture with the other views. 3. show the driver view and cockpit. 4. Have the pro driver talk more about what makes this car different than other cars in its class - he only casually mentioned the LMP car in comparison. 5. more car noises.

It is both a trackday weapon and a serious race car for sprint and endurance racing. Current R1 owners can race the R1 in several different series in the US, such as PSSA/SVRA, FARA, NASA, SCCA and local club races with unlimited or downforce classes. We had many owners race their R1s this year and look forward to more fast and fun racing in 2024.

Braking competently and correctly is one of, if not the biggest lap time difference maker in racing. 95% of your time will be found with how well you brake into corners. And if you dont believe me, do some sim racing and take notice to how easy it is to make massive gains or losses at hairpins and chicanes.

Tell Praga those door struts are upside down. The seals need to be wet while in the closed position and rods down.

That would be amazing but no. That was the price of the Gen 1 Praga R1 back in 2013. The R1 platform has been significantly improved and refined since then. Nothing is perfect but Gen 5 is darn near close.

We hear you! Who doesn't love the sound of high-revving NA engines?!!! The R1 used to be NA but you save a lot of weight and gain a lot of power with a turbo'ed engine setup. Being a purpose built race car, weight savings is critical to setting quickest lap times and wining races.

Those look absolutely incredible and I’d love one, but even if I sold both my Monos (yes, really) I’d be a bit short 😙 If either a) an R1R comes up for sale or b) I win the lottery I’ll be in a Praga without pausing for breath, amazing cars👏 I’d have a Bohema in a shot over a La Ferrari or a P1 though, so much more purposeful.

Set at 365bhp from the factory (designed for durability and reliability) and weighing 1,418lbs, the Gen 5 Praga R1's power to weight ratio is 0.257 (far greater than most race cars let alone sports cars). The engine is tuneable to 550bhp elevating it to an entirely different stratosphere (power to weight ratio: 0.388). It accelerates out of the corners like a rocket.
