"Range Confusion"? Which DMMs Have This Problem?

Some multimeters give erroneous readings when the selected current range does not match the designated jacks the leads should be in. I went through some of the DMMs I have and let's find out which ones have this problem.

You have the most oddball collection of DMMs I've ever seen! Just checked my Fluke 87V and EEVblog GW121, as I never thought of this problem. They both have a single position for A and mA, so the range is dictated by where the probe is inserted. Both also have a separate uA selector position and will beep if the probe is in the A socket, showing "LEAD" on the display.

Nice video. I will include such a test in my upcoming multimeter reviews. Owon continues to pleasantly surprise me, and over time, I'm growing to like it even more (despite the highly non-intuitive signal adjustment on the oscilloscope). Zoyi unfortunately is the worst in this regard. If I saw over 2A instead of the expected 20mA during some tests with my face close to the PCB, I would immediately jump up from my chair :D

5:20 My Fluke 87III does that too, but it's MUCH too "polite." It squeaks softly, no doubt because it doesn't want to startle you.

Thanks for the chapter marks. I just checked the 61e+. There are so many more choices since I bought that meter. Seems I just need to keep agreement between dial selection and input plug used. Meter works fine for me.

Thx kerry wong it give out a great point of current measure,And for the series of test current be careful of never turn the selection switch of multimeter when power still on,it must burned the meter ,for my meter dead now😅.

This can be an annoyance, but it's something you should be double-checking before measuring current because if you get it wrong the other way around you'll blow a fuse (by Murphy's law will not have spares on hand). If the meter doesn't warn you you're on the wrong range *before* you try to take readings it's not a very good meter. If it gives the wrong results while beeping loudly at you, that's OK IMO. If it can use a single set of jacks for μA through A, that's even better (though that's usually reserved for bench meters).

Have you ever opened multimeter? Did you saw shunt inside for 10A range? If you plugging probes in wrong holes, what you expect? RTFM!

I think that both you and Dave Jones are asking too much of manufacturers, and not enough of users. I have many of the meters you have both tested, including the 702S and am never confused. But then I have been doing electronics since 1955, using a Simpson 260 and a Triplett 310. But wait-both of these models are STILL made almost unchanged. I guess they just make them for us codgers who read manuals. YOU do the most thorough reviews and I appreciate it and vote with my purchases. I trust you a lot more than Dave.

Interesting. I always use Amps, because my Amps have so much resolution to measure even less than 1mA and can support up to 20A for 30 seconds.

Greetings, I have three UNIT UT61+, UT89XD, UT191T multimeters and a GOLDSTAR DM-311 from 1996 +/- ....and I performed those tests measuring current, which you did and none of them gave me a bad result, they all measured perfectly. use loads from 5mA to 40mA in DC and AC... they all measured well, when changing the place of the probe and changing the dial as you did... without problems 👍 saludos, poseo tres multimetros UNIT UT61+, UT89XD, UT191T y un GOLDSTAR DM-311del año 1996 +/- ....y realice esas pruebas midiendo corriente, que tu hiciste y en ninguno me dio mal, todos median perfecto. utilice cargas desde 5mA hasta 40mA en DC y en AC.... todos midieron bien, al cambiar las sonda de lugar y cambiar el dial como tu lo hiciste.... sin problemas 👍

4:05 Here the meter is not confused....The user is....Meter does what it should.....Just put it in the right range...Seriously....Those are NOT incorrect readings but incorrect SETTINGS.

not really, this is still a good point to bring up as sometimes you might make such a mistake and get wrong readings. Knowing about such issues will ensure the mistake doesn't happen

Agreed. Even worse.... ALL of my meters give the incorrect Volts and Ohms measurements when I have the probes in the Amperage jacks. Go figure!

Give me a break, anyone who does any work with DMM's will make this mistake more than once. Sometimes you get so far ahead in your troubleshooting or checking that you completely forget. Yes, thats never happened to you, but for the rest of us mortals, it does happen.
