Besides the fact that the Colt Double Eagle is built like a tank the design is brilliant for its time, (1989-1996). The 45 acp used 1911 magazines and all 1911 slide internals. A grip safety that was never needed was eliminated. The hammer didn’t have to be cocked so sheeple could find another excuse to piss down both legs. My favorite part of the design is there is no slide mounted S&W safety. The fact Colt didn’t re-invent the wheel or dazzle the public means nothing to me. I carried one half my law enforcement career without fail. Wish I hadn’t sold it.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed it so much and it served you so well.

The problems occurred when you took the grips off. The double action parts were just sandwiched between the exterior of the frame and the grips.

That is what I heard.

I have one in 45ACP that I picked up via an auction. It is a terrific gun. Works flawlessly and every time I shoot it, it impresses me. Really a terrific gun.

@@thetexasgunvault I bought it kind of by mistake. Didn't expect for my offer to be the winning bid. I had read the mixed reviews online and via KZbin. Took it too the range and was just overly impressed with it. So much so that I called my buddy who is a gunsmith and handled the FFL transfer and bragged about how I was downright shocked. The trigger is impressive, I like the weight to help control the recoil of 230GR, and its very accurate. It really is a gun that maybe got a bad rap because it was ahead of its time. My only complaint, difficult to fully disassemble and reassemble.

I always wanted one of those, but as a young police officer with a wife and child, it was far outside my finances. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

When I first saw this gun on the cover of Petersen´s Handguns in the latest 80s, I thought that it was an interesting prototype. But it turned out to be the actual gun ;) Apart from that, it is somewhat bizarre that Colt never managed to get a modern pistol off the ground and really into the market. The All American, the CZ 2000 (things to come in ownership), the Double Eagle were all well-meant, but none of them caught on.

You are right! Colt never figured out anything new.

There is definitely a third camp that can appreciate a pretty 1911, but buys based upon performance. The Double Eagle is far more interesting for not being a ubiquitous 1911, especially back when the Double Eagle came out and auto options were fewer. I like DA/SA and 10mm; I'd have tried it at the time. Although the bore is well above the hand, it would be thinner than the G20, so there's that.

Very good point.

i like 10mm. colt double eagle seems nice.

I think it has its positive aspects.

That absolute heresy that makes it 'work' underneath the grip panels is probably the biggest reason it flopped. Plus, it looks so similar because Colt wanted to get away with using 1911 frames to make DA/SA pistols, which is what resulted in the aforementioned heresy.

You are probably right.

@@thetexasgunvault I even made a meme video about it using part of the vid that Forgotten Weapons did on the Double Eagle that used the "What? It's just an ordinary Krabby pa-OH MY GOODNESS!" format from Spongebob.

He does so much for me. I use A LOT of ammo each month and without his support, none of this would be possible. I am so grateful for him.
