This is such a great medium. All the knowledge that you have taken many, many years to learn is shared and preserved. I really appreciate the fact that you do things in a way that the average guy can do. No fancy equipment, a bit oven cleaner, maybe spend a little bit on a valve compressor and purchase a second hand twenty five year old valve lapping tool off of Ebay.

Thanks Harvey - this is the point of this channel - not to show off, but to show you that you can have a go, and do a lot of jobs yourself - When I came to Canada I didn't have a screwdriver, so you make do with what you have and eventually buy tools you need, not what you want! I am working on a series of videos on a 300tdi 110 that came in for a vibration job, and the Montreal mechanic said he needed CV's, etc, etc, $$$$$! but in reality, the axle was saved as it was caught in time, as all it needed was stripping, cleaning and greasing up -- something that most guys can do.

Well looking at that fine job I might look at my P76 v8 engine and see why after paying 1200 dollars to have the heads done it came back and started leaking in the same place again , it must not have been machined properly I guess, confidence building watching you Mike 👌😀

Can't believe I missed watching this vid earlier ..... missed my daily dose of Mike inspiration! BTW I fully agree that it ts most important to lift and separate when starting the valve seating process .... I've made many, many boobs in the past by not taking that advice

Power of Cardboard Mike, a piece of cardboard please if you are going to put the mating surface of the head on the bench which will have bits of crud to scratch or embed in the soft aluminium. Also all valves ( and springs and collets) kept in order with valves pushed through cardboard . Don't blame me, this was mentoring in my youth from ex WW2 aero engine fitter parents' neighbour who did cars on the side. Why did my French teacher pick on me in his lessons for having oily hands ? Dennis's Garage was much better education than the fountain pen of my aunt. Textbook lapping technique anyway Mike!

I had a new sheet of steel on the bench just as good as cardboard - if you notice the valves were still in order

@@BritannicaRestorationsI'll let you off with a caution then! Hope no arc eye from the new welder!

I need to get a lot more kit yet before I fire up the welder - a bottle of argon for a start! The bottle rental is $200 a year - empty! Then a good face mask, fine leather gloves etc - I hope Santa is listening! Going back to the cardboard, I used to use it but when cleaning off the heads sometimes bits of hard crap would get embedded in the cardboard, and scratch the surface, so i have a clean bit of sheet steel which I can easily swipe clean My bench surface is real bad now with welding splat etc , so I just make a temp cover to work on

@@BritannicaRestorations I had a supply of CO2 fire extinguishers many moons back; they very nearly got hooked up for low cost TIG experiments. I had problems carbon arc brazing breathing the fumes, apart from causing the street lights to go out when I struck an arc. Hope your power supply is robust after storm damage.

@@BritannicaRestorations We are on the same wavelength then on mechanical cleanliness. I'm terrible on most clutter issues but OCD kicks in when things are dismantled.
