Range Rover Key Fob Battery Replacement - Smart Key Not Recognized or Can’t Unlock Door

If your Land Rover Range Rover gives you an error message “Smart Key Not Recognized” or you cannot unlock your doors with your key fob (maybe battery dead), this video is here to help. I do this with my 2019 Range Rover Sport but it should work with many other models of Land Rover’s.

Thank you for this. My husband's smart key battery died and he couldn't start our Evoque with it. Luckily, I have one whose battery was recently replaced by the dealer so he used mine. (When they told me they swapped out my smart key battery when my Evoque had been serviced, I was like, huh? I have had Cadillac, BMW, Lexus, etc. but Range Rover is new to me, and I wasn't impressed that my key could die because of a battery. I mean, come on.) Anyway, my key fob is a little different than yours, but your tip about putting the fob against the lines intrigued me, so I went out to see if it would work before I replaced the dead battery. The vertical lines WERE NOT present anywhere on my steering column much to my chagrin - it was completely smooth on all sides, however, I placed the key fob, buttons out, against the exact spot where the lines should have been, and pressed the button and voila!! The car started! I should have double-checked to make sure it wouldn't start the normal way with the dead battery, but my husband couldn't start it two days ago with it, so I assumed it still didn't have enough power to start it the normal way. GREAT TIP. Also, thank you for sharing how to get in the car! On another note, why in the world didn't my dealership go over all this with me? They should be telling their customers these tips, not making them find them on the internet when they're in a bad way. Thank you again. Good stuff and I can't wait to show my husband all these tricks.

Ive changed my battery but now my key fobs are dead do you no why ? I have to use the key to get in and then hold the key to the steering wheel for it to start? Lock/ unlock not working on keys :(

Got this issue with my Dad's vehicle but the steering column is in such a way that hides most of the lines on the side. Will it still work?

I just got the 2022 sport, 2 weeks out my smart Ket will not start the car but I can get in. Had to use the fin technique to start. Why is this happening? I Changed out the 2032 batteries on both remotes thinking that was the problem, no luck. Help me out to avoid a trip to dealer.
