As per the earlier comments - offroad it all starts and ends with traction - and that comes down primarily to tyres. A mild A/T has less than a quarter of the traction of a mud tyre that is also designed to spit out the muck as it goes. In muddy conditions, A/T's just don't cut it no matter how good the traction gizmos. What is more interesting is that the Rangie was able to even get up there on that rubber.
@Misadventure4WD
@Misadventure4WD 12 жыл бұрын
The section about the tyres pointing in the wrong direction was a test we ran to see if the A/T's combined with the traction control would have enough grip to climb out of the deep ruts. Close but no cigar. I think it would do it with the muddies on. You can see how easily it handles the same section on the return run through a few moments later. Have to say that the Cooper LTZ all terrains are by far one of the best A/T's on the market.

you have to remember that the RRS is essentially a short wheel base D3 with stiffer suspension. It also has independent suspension all around and cars with that system combined with the shorter wheel base and harder suspension will get a lot of wheel lift. Having recently been out testing a new 200series Cruiser though we saw a lot of similar dynamics including the continual wheel lift.

The Rangie certainly is luxury on wheels. Once you're out of the mud you can punt it around the black top like a race car. So much fun to drive on road and so comfortable. The big leather seats with fold down arm rests are like sitting back in a lounge chair. The Triton by comparison is like most work utes. You wouldn't choose one as an on-road only vehicle.

Probably need to look at the tyres again for clues as to why you would need two different driving techniques. In really muddy conditions like this you have to do a lot of compensating if you are running A/T's (as compared to the mud terrains on the Triton) In the RRS, the traction control also helps but only to a limited degree. Most cars on A/T's wouldn't make it through some of those sections. The main compensation is that you need more momentum to get through each section.

@bcatz454 I was joking with my mate in the Triton about how good the Cooper A/T's were and was bragging that they could even pull me out of the deep ruts on this well known puddle. It was close but no cigar this time. We've done this section more than a few times for fun and it was just a bit of experimenting to see how far I could push it. Must remember to go back and try out the new STT Muddies on that section.

This is not a full RR but a Range Rover Sport with a 2.7ltr turbo deisel putting out around 440nm of torque. It does weigh in at 2.5 tonnes though. DOn't forget that in this video, the Triton (L200) is running BFG mud tyres and the RRS only has Cooper All Terrains on it.

@william49suzuki The Sport has an intercooler and one of the big jobs is keeping the mud out of it. The intercooler is set very low at the front of the engine and there is actually now a kit available for a high mount intercooler with wider fins specifically designed for offroad. At $1400 its still a ways down the list of options I need to bolt on. Rock sliders are next ;-)

We have a lot of different vehicles in our club and there are pros and cons to all of them. Sometimes it's the diff wheelbase that helps/hinders them in certain sections, sometimes it is the clearance etc. In the end it's just personal preference and just because one person likes one brand/model doesn't mean they are right or wrong about anything.

It's actually a very steep section. The video doesn't do it justice. The ruts are also deep enough to have you dragging your belly through lots of sections so you need 4WD to keep any kind of traction.

Correct: Better tires on the L200, the RR tires in the mud were just coated and couldnt shed the mud in order to get good grip. Plus a better driver in the L200 compared to the RR, he seemed to not know where his front wheels were pointing and was pretty heavy on the gas by the sounds of things. As for diffs, the RR has centre locking diff (if turned on) and I dont know about the L200. :)

G'day to everyone at Carribean Rovers Puerto Rico! Glad you were able to drop in for a look at our vids. In answer to your question.... No. Neither vehicle has lockers. The RRS has the standard centre lock differential and traction control. The D2 has a manually locked centre differential and tractions control (circa 2000 version). Glad you like the vids. More coming your way soon including offroad tests of our new toy, a fully kitted out SVX Defender! Cheers

The RR driver needs to know which way his front tyres are pointing... interesting to hear how much harder the RR is working, presumably compensating for the traction control applying the brakes all the time. It also seems very short on articulation. The Triton looks more at home.

I agree - it could be down to better driver skills but the Mitsi looked casual in the way it dominated. The landy was having to build up speed to charge through a lot of stuff because you and I know it wasnt going to get there. Having to nag it about to get through looked like a repair bill waiting to happen.

The triton has aftermarket tires, and difflock which give it some advantage on here. But in the other hand, the triton also is clearly lighter and has more flexible suspension because of live rear axle. Overall can't say which is superior or actually better, does it even matter? They are quite different type of vehicles anyway,

Shame the RR Sport didn't have mud-terrains on but it did well with the A/Ts. I know which of the two I would prefer for every day use. I have Cooper LTZ's fitted to a 'grown up' Range Rover and I think these are better than the A/Ts. The Nitto Terra Grapplere are better than both but noisier on the road. For every day and off road use the LTZs Rule...

Imagine if it had some beefy tread it probably would have crawled over the tree they had to chainsaw! LoL! I like RRS not a huge fan but still like them. I own 2008 Lexus GX470. Just FYI. The triton, in that shape is either 3.2L or 2.4L The RRS is a TDV6, both the TDV6 and TDV8 make more torque at idle then Triton at peak. The RRS / Triton on similar rubber - no contest - Even with Rear Difflock option on Triton the RRS TC, Rear RDLk & TR system will beat the Triton hands down. The Triton is capable in its own right, weigh ~1800kg with driver vs 2500kg on the RRS. Never had issue with any vehicle offroad from lightest (Vitara 3 door) to a kitted Defender at 3400kg loaded.
