Range Rover stolen the day after man returns it due to insurance costs

In video 3 of tonight's 4 part series, we're looking at a story from the Daily Mail about my favourite subject... Range Rover thefts. A man decided his Range Rover was far too expensive e to insure because of all the thefts, so he returned it to the leasing company... only to find out the car had been stolen before they'd even managed to send it to a trade auction! There's a lot to say about this Range Rover issue, but has anything changed, or is JLR just throwing money at newspapers...? Let's chat about it.

I think you’re wrong Geoff. If inflation has risen 4% over 12 months and EE haven’t raised their prices in that said 12 months, then they’ll be earning 4% less in real terms than they were 12 months before. Whilst all their cost such as energy, rents and wages etc have gone up 4%. But also we all know the CPI is BS and probably half what the true inflation level is, as it suits the government to be an under estimate . As they can inflate the national debt away and make the public think they’re better off than they are. Helping MP’s to get re-elected.

If you have paid Vehicle Excise Tax (otherwise known as Road Fund Licence) and are found *NOT* to be insured, then automatically you are found to be no longer taxed.

⚠️Just went past our local Arthur Daley used car lot in Mochdre North Wales where they usually have at least 15 Range Rovers ..........not ONE to be seen. They must have got rid back to auction. Who the hell is buying them and why if they are uninsureable? Is someone stock piling them or is JLR buying them back as a parts source? 😂

Years ago I had a safety recall on my L322 Range Rover (brake hose failure). 4 dealers were contacted and the quickest they could deal with this was 3 months. Why do you think there are so many independent Land Rover specialists out there. Unreliable product plus main dealers who are disinterested in helping once you have bought it. When they work they are great but.............

I watch this Land Rover fiasco with my perfectly satisfactory 2007 Ford C-Max 1.8 diesel (which I bought 6 years ago for £4000) and I think 'Thank God I wasn't tempted to buy a status symbol car'. If I get excited about a nice looking car these days, I'll check myself & think - 'All cars are assets depreciating to Zero. It's just a question of how fast. Just get a solid, sensible cheap one.'

I don't drive a Range Rover as I prefer to get from A-B but out of curiosity I got an insurance quote on a comparison site for a 2018 Range Rover and it was £900 for the year which I thought was quite reasonable...

Out land rover 110 went into land rover Preston for a service ,when it came back there was screws on the floor ,a week later the Land Rover went missing and we never got it back ,some one had taken the tracker out wile it was in for its service

Your assessment on older car's is almost accurate. The problem is when a known high wear part is no longer available and not made by an after market manufacturer. Also, older car's are usually much easier to work on. Unnecessary electronics is killing new cars. Why does the computer need to control the boot release or petrol flap? Yet alone the accelerator. Geoff, you gave the answer to the problem right at the end. Make all RRs electric, so they won't work and no thief will be able to move them. In the once off case were there is a mobile electric RR, it will go up in flames the moment that the thief drives off.

Hi Geoff. The only way to stop the theft of so many rangerover s, is to slash the the price. If they sold for say 30k, it wouldn't be worth the hassle and that figure is still more than the build quality. I'm with you that buying expensive new cars is a complete waste of money, but I wouldn't criticise people who do. If, for example, someone spent £65,000 on a BMW X5 back in 2006, that's the equivalent of spending £108,000 today. It's an obscene amount of money, but that X5 is a real bargain today.

Years ago gangs used to steal luxury cars here in the kingdom, then hire containers and ship them to places like Australia and New Zealand. I watched an Australian police programme (Highway Patrol) and the police stopped a luxury car for something minor. Red bells started ringing with the police officers when it was spotted that the number on the engine block had been erased. They could, however l, make out the number in the very bottom of the windscreen and ran it. Turns out it had been stolen in the UK about a year earlier and shipped over in a container. They then showed footage of the owner in the UK being told that his car had been found, following which he was harassed by the insurance company saying they wanted their money back. If you pitched this as an idea for a television programme, you’d get turned down because it was too ridiculous.

The insurance on these vehicles is obviously cheaper in whichever country they are being exported to. Why not register the car over there and buy a 'green card' policy for use in the UK, might be cheaper. I hope that the thieves paid the London ULEZ charge before they got caught.

I may be wrong here, but I remember a story about the top managers at Range Rover going to China to sell a small part. However, the top bosses at RR got pissed and sold the whole company to them for buttons. That was about twenty-five years ago.

When you divide the amount JLR has allegedly spent on upgrading security by the number of vehicles affected - that's not much on a per car basis. Throwing money at a problem doesn't count for anything, it's how effectively you use it.
