It's made to be reliable for only 50k-60k miles. That's because it's a tax write off vehicle for business owners to put money back into the economy. It's not a Honda, Lexus,Toyota. You only see old foreign luxury vehicles being purchased in the young people usually in poverty stricken areas or people who want to look like they have money.

As a private dealer and former car sales, my advice is to stop purchasing expensive luxury cars from carmax, carvana, and other side lots. You buy luxury from the manufacturers dealers only! Places like carmax and etc... cannot fix nor back those vehicles with technical warranty issues. Most dealers don't like to even touch them because they aren't certified and inspected to their standards. Word to wise stay away from German, Swedish, Italian, and swiss brand auto makers unless purchasing from that particular brand dealer. Japanese brands are your most reliable to purchase elsewhere.

I'm a woman and own an auto repair shop (mechanic and collision)... Those types of vehicles are not the type for you to buy used, much less drive reliably on a regular basis. If you can't afford thousands in repairs on a regular basis, you better learn to fix it yourself like in my case. I'm extremely vigilant of my german cars I drive every day in Los Angeles, and if it weren't for my expertise and my constant due diligence... my cars wouldn't last for shit. Range Rovers are ticking time bombs and yours is no exception.

There are only 3 kind of people I know who own Range Rovers. 1- People with heck lot of money, who have several cars parked in their garage and they really dont mind sending their RRs for repairs regularly. I have few friends who are big fan boys and dont mind spending money on them, but they can afford to. 2- People who think they are getting a deal on older used ones since their prices implode harder than Ocean Blue Submarine. This particular kind of people are under an illusion that repair costs will come down just because the car costs less. No surprise the repair costs dont come down. These are the kind of people who doesnt know any better, but in their minds they do. 3- People who want to look rich, when they are not. The need to look successful instead of being that is real and a lot of people suffers from it. Hope your ordeal has stopped and you have sold it off. Best of luck.

I’m an over the road driver so I deal with DEF systems all year long, and the sad thing is that 98% of the time there is no mechanical issues it’s always software. The National Transportation Safety Board requires auto manufacturers to derate or stop the engine from operating for any reason when pollutants associated with exhaust are out of range with any of the many DEF sensors on a vehicle. The software can sense microscopic changes in emissions and this is why this happens. That engine can run for 10 years there is nothing wrong with that car except highly sensitive emissions software.

So my first luxury car was a jag, but someone immediately crashed into it and totaled it and it wasn’t even worth buying a new one so I went to Honda and Honda has been treating me right but for the longest time I’ve always wanted Range Rover, but I dated this mechanic who told me to NEVER buy a jeep Wrangler, a range or Mercedes. He said that the $$$ fixing is just it’s not it’s not worth the headache in terms of the money if you’re gonna buy, you should just lease a new one and never buy a USED one. my friend has one though and her check engine light has been on since she’s bought that car. She just stopped taking it into the shop because she said she’s over. She said she’ll never buy another one.

Sorry you had trouble. You’re right, they are amazing vehicles. So 1) always use OEM DEF BMW, Audi, VW, Jag or Land Rover. The peak DEF sucks and can throw codes and the dreaded shutdown. The vehicle can’t measure the quality of the DEF, it measures the NOx output and if it exceeds a certain value it sends the bad quality alarm. Three things should be done after this; 1 drain the DEF tank and refill with OEM DEF. 2 reset the DEF alarm, 3 remove the injector and clean it with a toothbrush and alcohol. They tend to get gunked up with urea crystals. I hate to say it but the story for you is that you got ripped off by the dealer/mechanic. A new injector is about $250 and takes 10 minutes to swap out. But I doubt it needed that. I’m a long time owner and also an engineer, so I do my own work. I even have a top notch computer for diagnosis etc. better luck next time.!

Having previously done customer service for them, I was always shocked at how people will pay so much money for such old vehicles, with high mileage. The vehicle has a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty, which had already expired via years seeing as it was a 2016. So called luxury vehicles come with really high maintenance costs, that only increase after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. I took so many calls from people like you, who are unaware corporate cannot help. The manufacturer of your vehicle can only essentially help while the vehicle is under their warranty. After that, you are indeed on your own. I am so happy you got a brand new car. God is good and you are so blessed compared to many of the other horror stories I heard about. FYI, dealerships will still buy that faulty car from you with no problem and sell it to someone else. Also, if you can buy a $50,000 used car, you can buy a $50,000 new car. Few luxury vehicles are actually luxury. People need to pay less attention to hype and do their research. Honda and Toyota are still the King because their cars last. They are quality over hype.

My issue is 2 fold. When they say get rid of it what do they mean? Scrap it or pass the problem to someone else who they will give the same “get rid of it” advice? Secondly if they can’t fix it then this is a standards issue. Not sure how it works in the US but trading standards should get involved when registered businesses are selling the public products that are not fit for purpose.

Diesels are very much unreliable, even the Toyota Landcruiser VX which is a V8 engine has nightmares with clogging injectors among other issues, so does the Mazda CX5 diesel. Get a gasoline powered car and half the unreliability will be gone! I have a Range Rover Autobiography SV with 96K miles and it runs beautifully with no issues at all. Also, you should watch LR time channel, they service and fix their Land Rovers in person and they have demonstrated over and over again that the dealerships don't really know what they are doing for the most part and at one time, got quoted 2,800 euros to fix a problem that required zero dollars to fix, no tools, and would be fixed in less than 30 seconds, now think about that!

Comedy of errors. I’ve owned Land Rovers for 25 years. I currently have a 2017 D5 with the TD6. DEF is common to all modern diesels. If the vehicle hasn’t been driven for awhile the DEF can crystallize in the tank or clog the injector. Both are an easy fix. You clean them off. The dealer and service tech didn’t know what they were doing. All they had to do was follow a simple diagnostic procedure on topix to identify the sensor or wire fault. Not sure what was changed for $1300. Any sensor can be purchased from LR Direct and they come straight from the UK by DHL in a couple days. $450 for an oil change is a crime. You can get factory recommended oil and filter from Atlantic British for around $100. If you don’t do the service yourself, you should be able to have any shop change the oil with your oil for $50 or less. For any luxury brand there are indy or independent repair shops that are usually run by factory trained techs. Indy shops are often cheaper and offer higher level diagnostic services than dealerships. Dealerships tend to just change expensive parts without doing true diagnostic work. I’ve been in the Army for 30 years. I can’t recall using DEF in our vehicles. LR vehicles are used here in Colorado because they are unstoppable on mountain passes and snow.

Good work on buying a brand new car, I myself was taught the same lesson by a Pre owned BMW which was gonna need a new engine on top of the 10 repairs it had already cost me within 12 months, so I replaced the trash with a brand new Japanese Pick Up and never looked back. What you went through ruins people's life savings and you've learned the lesson in your youth so be glad. I feel bad for you . They all drained your wallet for no reason. You were dealing with dealers and mechanics that are not diesel experts. This was a simple cheap fix. You have 1 DEF injector on that TD6. It sprays directly into the exhaust. You can lay on the ground and remove it yourself from the exhaust. Take it out and clean it and remove the uretha crystals yourself. Reset the code with an OBD scan tool, and the message will change. Then the message will clear after driving a few miles. As long as you clean the injector once a year, it will never come back. Americans should not be afraid of diesels, 1/2 the cars around the world are, you just have to have experience with them.

No. Taking ur car into the dealerships is more practical bc a lot of contingencies of vehicle manufacturers engine failures and other mechanical/technical problems can only be replaced if there’s record of it being maintenance at certified dealership. That happened with Kia. They denied millions of people a replacement engine bc they claimed the engine failed due to lack of oil changes. Then when you produce evidence you got it serviced on time everytime at like day, a juffyluve or valvoline, they deny ur claim bc it wasn’t serviced at THEIR Kia dealerships! This happens far too often. So better to just take it to dealership to avoid any discrepancies or denials. They find any reason to weasel out of paying for their shxt mistakes

Long story: I had something similar happen to me when buying my car. Went to carmax and purchased a 2014 Audi q5. The car was below mileage for the year PLUS I was in the market for a compact suv and fell in love with this one. Went in, test drove the car (ran like butter. Had that new car smell)and was already pre approved so the purchase went smoothly. About 3-5 days later my oil light came on out of nowhere. Luckily carmax has that 30 day return policy so I utilized that. Called carmax and they told me my system might have to be reset and of course it was much worse. According to them, the pipe that gave my car its turbo boost was cracked and leaking. They let me know they could fix it and I’d have it back in a week or so. A week goes by and the new part they bought was leaking worse than the original part. I was told it would take another week for them to order and install a brand new piece(I was driving a loaner car at this point). A week goes by and I get no phone call to update me on the condition of my car so i took the initiative and called them first. I was redirected to the folks that have been helping me this whole time and was told AGAIN that it would take another week bc they couldn’t find a new piece for my car. At this point we’re at the beginning of week 4. I had the car for 3 days….(rmbr carmax has a 30 day return policy) Carmax ended up having my car for the entire month. I called them for the last time and told them to stop any work that they were doing on the car and that I’d like to speak with the service manager face to face. Ended up speaking with the guy and he let me know that the service area was swamped and that they have the new piece for the car and It would be ready tmr morning. Before this meeting I found out carmax puts aftermarket parts on ALL their cars and that worried me bc this was a German made car. He reassured that everything would be fine and that they do this all the time but if I felt uncomfortable, I could look into their maxcare program if I wanted to get the car repaired by Audi themselves. The downfall of that meant I’d have to sell the car back to carmax, add on an additional $4000 and buy it back. I put all my faith into this last repair, got the call and got excited. Received my keys, turned my car on and was distraught. Not only did my ac come out really slow but the car was now smoking.. a lot. Drove it right up to the service area and the guy let me know that bc the second piece leaked so bad, there was excess oil left in the pipe and that it would take about 3 days to really burn off. Accepted that excuse and drove the car home. At that point I didn’t feel comfortable with the car anymore. Gave the car another 3 days (all I had left of the 30 day return policy) and immediately gave the car back. The car was not just smoking at this point, it wasn’t just having ac problems but now the engine was revving itself while in park which caused the lights inside to flicker. also when you turn the car off it was STILL smoking like.. engulfing the entire back side of the car type of smoke. Will NEVER buy a car luxury or not from carmax EVER again.

What a story. Sometimes we falsely believe that the more the vehicle cost the better it is. Not so. I read a comment from the guy on a video of this guy throwing a rod with his Ferrari showing off. The guy said supercars are too delicate for the price you pay for them. You can say that for many luxury cars also. I've never owned a luxury car because living in Atlanta (a status town) I've had many friends who have. I was appalled at the high maintenance costs on these vehicles, plus the high labor costs. I was a Honda, Toyota and Mazda man (I had four) before I bought this used 2020 Kia Soul S in 2022. I love it. But I also love the reliability of the Honda, Mazda and Toyota. All of my friends who had bought those luxury cars - got rid of them for something more dependable. Young people don't get caught in the trap of status buying.

First, as a fellow vet, I feel a great deal of empathy for you. I bought a new 2024 Mustang GT for 47K. What a ripoff! Why does anyone need a 50k used car that they finance 100%? By the way, the Mustang felt so heavy and cumbersome that I sold it and bought a new SUV for may wife and took the money I had left over and bought a 2004 RX-8. I love my little car, but I have put a couple thousand bucks into it. We shall see how much it costs me as the RX-8, especially the ‘04 and ‘05 models, are unreliable. The difference here is my car only costed me a few grand to purchase and both the SUV and RX-8 are paid off. This is what happens when a really pretty woman goes to a used car dealership. They saw you coming and served up a vehicle they knew was defective and could not be fixed except by spending a lot of money! With any luck, it will get stolen. I wish you luck.

So in 2020 my wife and I purchased a 2011 Cadillac SRX 2.8T Performance Edition ywith only 18,280 miles on it. Only one person owned it and it was an older lady. The day we drove off the lot it’s been nothing but trouble. On the way home from the lot my wife was following me back to the house when she rear ended me at a stoplight causing over $6,500 in repairs. Then the sunroof leaked twice and blew out the electronics to the rear lift gate. The power windows stopped working, the front suspension and sway bars had to be replaced, the tire pressure sensors went out on all but 1 tire. The navigation screen wouldn’t go down when the driver door was opened. The rear actuators failed for the lift gate and the washer fluid tank cracked and had to be replaced to pass inspection and then this past Christmas….the timing chain had to be replaced! That was a $4,500 repair right at Christmas time. I’ve spent so much money on that thing that I feel like every time I start it something goes wrong with it. My dad always told me that paying the monthly payment on a Cadillac isn’t the problem; it’s fixing it when things start failing on it. I’ve probably spent well over $11K of my own money on repairs after the 2 year warranty ran out. Because of its age Cadillac wouldn’t offer more than a 2 year bumper to bumper warranty. My wife had actually picked out a Range Rover we really liked but I’ve always heard since I was a kid that a Range Rover is a hole in which you throw money into. Now I know Cadillac is like that as well!

NO ONE without mechanical skills should ever consider any used European car. I fixed cars myself and got fed up with BMW, land Rover, Audi blues... There's a reason these cars are so inexpensive when used.. They depreciate soon as the warranty has expired. I would suggest getting new car under warranty if you have no skills and you need a reliable car. Used Japanese cars can be safe purchases.. always research the car before you buy it. Get a report on the car life history and try to contact the previous owner. This can be embarrassing and rude to some people but it's worth a shot.

If you can lease one I would do that. It’s warrantied while you lease it.

I used to sell cars at Carmax and our people would always come in trying to buy used Range Rovers and german cars. I would warn them about the high cost of maintenance on the german cars and also just flat out tell them to not buy the range. Most people who were trying to buy these cars were trying to spend every dime they had to get in one of these cars. The rich folks would come in and buy old toyotas, mazdas and hondas. What im trying to say is live within your means. Stop buying cars for other people to see you in or because you think that you “deserve it “ whatever that means.

Wow! I too love Range Rovers, but their reliability concerns have always kept me away from them. I've heard many similar stories just like yours. I would love to see your story go viral; I think Land Rover/Range Rovers lack of commitment to their customers should encourage even the rich to stop buying them.

Sounds to me that she couldn't afford the car. I mean $1300 for standard maintenance on a luxury car is reasonable to me. She needed to get a car she could afford then she wouldn't have had so many problems. This is an example of broke people "trying to keep up with the Jones!" I mean the fact that she's installing her own fluids is a red flag that she can't afford the car! Lastly, where the heck is her man! If she gets decent guy in her life, he will take care of all these problems. Men are very useful for some things!

Sorry this happened to you! Geez! The best advice I can give you for owning a Range Rover - since I owned one - buy them new. Lease them and get rid of them. Only buy them old IF you can afford to fix them. They are beautiful cars if they are up-kept. I have owned 8 BMWs, a Range Rover and now a Porsche over the past 17 years. All new or two years old and under the dealership warranty- not a third party warranty. I currently have a used Porsche but warranty from Porsche Canada directly until 2028. I want anyone to know who is reading this comment that any high end luxury vehicle will be expensive to fix. Make sure you have deep pockets or know a good mechanic 🧑‍🔧 I hope you have better luck 🍀 next time on your future purchase!! Good video explaining what happened to you! Thanks for being transparent with us sis!
