Brought back some memories! Alejandro Villanueva was in my class. Poor guy was 6’10” and 300+ pounds and was getting the same calories as dudes half his size. He’s in the back row of the grad photo and it looks like he’s standing on a milk crate. I gained about 10 pounds before school and came out about 25 pounds lighter.

Man that was a mental recall for me as well, I joined the army in 1999- 2003, and went to ft. Knox KY. As a 19 delta cav scout and it was o.s.u.t training 16 weeks long and the drill sergeants would give us maybe three four minutes to eat at the beginning it seemed less ,so you damn sure had to cram and jam if wanted to get full, it sucked but I made it it was a tough m.o.s. but I really enjoyed it. scouts out.

Great content as always, in the spirt of full disclosure I attended a shortened version of the South Korean ranger school, It was going to be fun the said, imagine doing this with Korean food! there were NO calorie items in a Korean mess hall! but it was good although be it dangerous training and you got a 4 day pass when you got back! that and a ROK Ranger badge that could only be worn in country! I understand in the very late 80's they stopped sending American soldiers there due to the injury rate!

I remember them from 1982. They were good. My attack plan was always eat the protein first. We had beacon or sausage. I ate eggs and beacon first, then pancakes. Dip them in the syrup. Then potatoes and gravy. I choked the milk down on the way out of the door. The best hot meal was at the end of Desert phase (no longer part of the school). Ranger buddy and I got recycled at the end of desert phase. We were sent to throw trash away while waiting to load the AC for Florida. At the dumpster there was an opened Honey Bun with one bite out of it. We pocketed it and got caught during JMPI. It was either out or recycle - the bonus was we got to sneak into the mess hall for food. I think we had two or three days before the next class jumped in, so we got to load the hump!

Mountain Phase! Thee hardest phase, to me. If I would have recycled mountains, I would have quit. Lucky, my squad jumped into our mission without Cadre. The rest of the jump was scrubbed due to high winds. Once we got half our squad out of the trees, we moved out and made our link up on time. Cadre, said….. No one was there to see your movement, you made your linkup on time. You’re a Go! Do not slack off or I’ll give you a No Go. The motivation of knowing I got a Go kept me driving on. You can only eat this much before going into patrols. Once you’re back in the Barracks, your stomach is closed off to big meals. There is no way to put half of this food down. I was in the latrine, crying because the food was backed up into my throat. And then you get your care package food. I was crying on the bus ride to Florida phase while I was eating chips ahoy cookies dipped in Gobber grape pb&j.

Confession of a messhall chow Nazi: (Which is NOT anti Semitic by any means.) In 1990, the Army was going through an overhaul, where it was decreed that OJT qualified Infantry, certain Special Ops support personell, notably 160'th Aviation Brigade Nightstalkers crew chiefs and door gunners, medics, had to attend 11B AIT. And this was a cycle of brains, class, and talent, like I have never seen. There was even a Senior Brother Rat from VMI! Anyway, as an E-6, I was dragooned into being a "barker" That's what it's really called. At Benning, it was really needed, because they had to pass through 1800 people in 90 minutes. I didn't hold to the 4 minute rule, but if there was a table where soldiers were conversing, "Up. Out. Now!!! You're done, get the fuck out! And I didn't care if they had just sat down. I have to work 90 minutes at every meal, and eat last? No fucks given. 4 minute rule?!? You should see Navy Seal BUD/S training, where they go through the chow line,, and are given enough time to eat whatever they got, in the time it takes them o shuffle to the KP's dishwashing hatch,, and exit. Every. Fucking. Time.

However, I do have serious question on nutrition: Does it make more sense to gain or to lose weight prior to physically demanding military course or school? So should one put on some reserves or rather already get used to the upcoming hardships? Cheers.
