My wife died recently and I went through some serious financial troubles. She had one of these doomsday buckets in her room. After she passed, it took me over a month before I could even go into her room. After getting all the bills paid from the funeral and cremation, electricity, water, rent and dog food for 3 dogs, I had nothing left to feed myself. I went about 4 days without food, got desperately hungry and finally went into her room to see if she left any change lying around so I could go get some food. Found her doomsday bucket. Honestly wasn't terrible. It had mac and cheese, a bunch of noodles type dishes (chicken Alfredo, tomato, veggie etc.) and some snacks stuff. It honestly fed me for about 30 days. Enough time to start to get my financial status back. Food wasn't that great, but it was food. When you haven't eaten for 4 days you'll eat just about anything. That's really the only way I see these doomsday buckets value. When there's nothing else left.

As an avid backpacker, I’ve had the biscuits and gravy a few times. The trick is to add more water and let it sit longer than recommended. Also break up the biscuit while it’s in the bag. They are so big that it’s hard for them to rehydrate. After a long day hiking and cold night on the mountain, the biscuits and gravy are really nice.

my mom really liked Jim Baker when i was a kid and believed everything they were saying, so she spent tens of thousands of dollars on his doomsday food without much thought about what it tasted like or anything. One day in the winter when we were low on food, we decided to make some of the food she bought, i had broccoli and chedder, and some kind of sausage and gravy, I remember the broccoli literally hurt to eat, it was like i was eating soap except it made my throat burn, the sausage and gravy tasted like wet sand and i ended up throwing it all up later lol.

Mountain house is king in rations. They even make the Meal Cold Weather meals for the Department of Defense. Pancake mix would be one of the easiest things to preserve. It's dry powder with leavening, sugar, and salt. Just vacuum pack, and sous vide for like 20 minutes and that shit will outlast humanity

Rice bean and lentils too. Just add water and some salt. Pasta is also good. As long as it's in a sealed container and not exposed to moisture or oxygen it can last a decade.

I have a decent amount of emergency food like this stocked up. I hope I never have to find out how it tastes. The key to eating that “food” is to eat all your normal food you have in the house and whatever you can buy from dwindling local supply. Then go without for a day or two until you’re famished. You are starving, getting a mean headache, kinda wobbly on your feet. Then this stuff will probably taste kinda ok.

Yea, this shite is in no way something to eat first day(s) of an emergency - god forbid it ever happens and anyone ever has to actually turn to this stuff - but it’s more for when you’re down to nothing, stomach growling, you’re desperate, and need food to go off of for a period of time until something better … hopefully … comes along later (if environmentally possible), like hunting, fishing, crops, etc. (depending on the emergency scenario, of course, but nuclear warfare may hinder that so this may very well be what gets someone by for long periods of time … unfortunately, but better than nothing) Because most people stocking up on food like this for when SHTF will also have at least other foods on hand that is eaten on the daily right now (canned foods, rice, etc.) that would be used first, then once that dwindles down, this should be your emergency _emergency_ food. Backup of the backups.

My coworker is an older woman who can't get around very well, so she lost her shit when covid started and panic bought supplies. She always told me that she had a bunch of reserves "just in case" but I never understood how much until I helped move her out of her apartment last November. THOUSANDS of canned goods and HUNDREDS of these buckets from floor to ceiling and "tactically hidden" in various other places. Just when he thought we had cleared out the room, you go to pick up a suitcase: More cans. Oh hey, a random box: more cans. Why is this shop vac so heavy? MORE FUCKING CANS HIDDEN INSIDE. We were supposed to he there for 3 hours.....it took 9-10 and i threw out my back. Seeing this was a nice reminder of that insanity 😂

If freeze dried food is crunchy, it means yamm didn't add enough hot water. With Mountain house camping and MCW meals, you add hit water to the pouch, and shake it vigorously and then let steep for 10 minutes. Add more water and mix as needed. Freezedrying removes all water from the food, leaving it crispy and dry, and it will absorb all moisture from your mouth and throat as you eat it. Mixing thoroughly helps makes sure the food absorbs all the water it needs to fully hydrate, and vastly improves flavor and texture. Oh and eggs smell bad because they are high in sulfur.

Fun coincidence: Technology Connections posted a fantastic video on freeze-drying just the other day. They bought a freeze dryer and experimented with a bunch of foods over the course of a month. All these buckets contain freeze-dried foods that honestly should never be freeze-dried. The biggest problem with these is rehydration. It's virtually impossible to restore their original texture and mouth feel by just adding water (or hot water in some cases), so you end up with mush that feels nothing like the original dish, even though it contains exactly the same nutrients. The best foods to dry are certain fruits like cantalope or strawberry (just don't rehydrate them!), condiments like fresh onions or garlic (powder 'em up and, again, don't rehydrate) and raw eggs (powder 'em for compact storage and rehydrate as needed -- they'll make perfectly normal omelettes). People who thought that selling freeze-dried _everything_ without ever testing what the end consumer would end up with was a good idea are fucking psychotic.

Honestly there are so many better prepper foods I can think of off the top of my head... honey and maple syrup for sugar and flavour. freeze dried fruits like you said. Vacuum sealed grains and flour. Dehydrated eggs and milk. Pemmican. Just... ingredients that you have and can cook with that last a long time. The idea you preserve a full on meal ready to eat instead of ingredients is just a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah... They don't really put much thought into these buckets... Because let's say that these buckets are the last things you have to eat, would it really be a good idea to use your water supply to rehydrate food when you could have 'dry' food that you could eat dehydrated and don't feel miserable? That just doesn't make sense to me... If I saw the way the food looked like when rehydrated, I would probably just eat everything dehydrated like a snack and give it a day. Also, Papa Meat mentioned a couple of times that some of the food has gone bad, it makes me think that these companies aren't that trustworthy, if you claim that your freeze-dried shenanigans last up to 10-15 years or more, it shouldn't go bad and taste like vinegar. People just do everything for money, it's disgusting.

Also, beef and four-legged game meat can last crazy long if salted, thoroughly dehydrated, and air-tight sealed. On that, I'm honestly tired of all these jerky brands selling barely dehydrated meat as if it's supposed to be jerky. Meat jerky should be dry as a fuckin bone, not juicy. It should be able to last years, but the big brands' products expires a couple months from production.
