Howler's draw ability is actually way stronger than it looks - if you are able to discard cards one at a time, you can stack many triggers on one creature, which means when it hits you draw a card for EACH trigger you put on it!

One thing I feel like it's not mentioned enough about Sab-Sunen is that while it looks, at first glance, like a classic simic durdle engine, it's both humongous and has trample, which very few of the simic durdle engines have. A little ramp, +1/+1 counter sources and a bunch of removal and counterspells and you're garanteed to attack with a double-digit-power indestructibe trampling commander.

I do agree that Temmet is being underrated as an include in existing Esper Zombie decks, as a slightly berserk anthem. Varina (or Nevinyrral to be a weirdo like me) have a clear value each turn, whereas Temmet is at his best when he is not clearly advertised in advance. Someone is going to hold up a Swords for when you try the mega-anthem.

Temmet is at worst a redundant copy of Knowledge is Power in a Varina deck, which makes it one of the 3 or 4 best cards in the 99. Seems like an extremely reasonable take.

Aatchik is 1000% NOT an insect tribal deck, but is a Golgari Aristocrats deck. Throw tons of creatures and artifacts that want to be sacrificed (ie; Accursed Marauder, Steve, Mishra’s Bauble) and then a few sac outlets like Phyrexian Altar/Ashnod’s Altar to sac all the insects you’ll be making and racasting Aatchik. After sacrificing all your insects you could sac your now HUGE Aatchik to Greater Good to draw a massive amount of cards. It’s actual a really good commander!

Avishkar is a perfect rival as it too has gone through rebellion and revolt. And no plane can rebuild like Avishkar. Hazoret may have the most fearless racers at the Grand Prix but the inventors from Avishkar rival Urza himself. The glorified chariots of Ahmonket are up against the best engineering in modern memory.

Hazoret is acting as the race marshal. They would be the person to officially start the race. Since they are a god they are likely acting as an honorary race marshal

While wheels can be good for Howler one of the best cards in the deck by far I've found is Ghostly Pilferer, being a way to wheel by itself when it connects after discarding your hand to its own ability, or other such repeatable effects that discard one card at a time.

I'll defend Pia till I die. She isn't bad, she's just not a turbo value engine. Kids these days see a Commander that doesn't say "draw a card" or "copy" on it and suddenly it's a bad Commander

I felt that she could've skip the first ability, while letting the player to choose and create two to three different kinds of vehicle instead of one. Or, she should allow players to put counters of different abilities base on energy you pay, on target creature or vehicle. She IS the mechanic, right? She shouldn't be this limited.

@@Cyberium nah, both of her abilities feed into each other. All it takes is a measly thopter to hit someone and you're off to the races. Start making Aetherjets and smacking everyone evenly to make even bigger Aetherjets. I honestly like her more than Saheeli, because she benefits off Energy, but she doesn't require you to play Energy cards. I know Saheeli doesn't either, as she only requires you to play Artificers or artifacts, but her abilities and spot on the mana curve fight with each other. You're either playing bad cards that make energy before her so you can copy something right away, or your ramping into her early, and then not having any Energy to copy something when she comes down.

Pia Nalaar can feed into itself though. your vehicles make more energy when they deal combat dmg and therefore you can make bigger vehicles

I built Caradora as a Ledge Shredder secret commander deck. So the 98 is built around self-milling and landfall +1/+1 counter synergies

I think the idea behind Oviya over Kona would be where you have a focus on untapping Oviya. Kona is limited to once at the beginning of your second main phase.

Vnwxt seems interesting. I’m thinking about building looters and Tim/pinger tribal. So you have the easy engine speed with the pingers and looters become card advantage late game. Maybe that wizard legend who taps to draw 3. Some interesting tapping synergies ties everything together.

I think caelorna is actually a pretty interesting commander for sea monster decks. Usually those decks can get blown out early before you start tempoing out the big dudes. Having an 0/8 body every game on turn 2 makes it significantly harder to attack you and could work out as a pseudo-propaganda effect, which would really help you as you build into the end game

Eh, it doesn’t ramp or draw cards or help you overrun the board. I’d rather have a commander that propels me into casting my sea monsters than have a do-nothing blocker. I’d rather cast a signet than Caelorna.

I was really low on this set until I actually played sealed. My sealed deck had two (2) copies of Captain Howler, from the same pack, no less! It felt very good to trigger him and have the threat of killing my opponent at any time. I'm excited to see how he'll play out in commander. I never actually built an Izzet commander deck, despite my first commander deck being the 2011 Riku of Two Reflections precon. I got a copy of Ketramose in the box my boyfriend and I bought, and it was very sweet of him to give him to me. It was in his half of the packs. I'm planning to make him a soul sisters / blink deck to balance out the life loss of Ketramose. Another early commander deck of mine was Teysa, Orzhov Scion. I really like how neither deck steps on the other's card pool. I'm glad I can build a new deck in one of my favorite color combos without dismantling my favorite Orzov deck. As a gay man, it helps that I find both characters hot, reheheh. Howler's got a nice, bulky body. Ketramose has abs and is at least 6'8". If either of these men asked me out, I'd say yes, reheheh. Excited to see how Tomer makes his excited cards, especially since both cards I'm excited for are in the Tomer's Favorites list. I felt disinterested in building commander decks for a little while. Honestly, only a month, but it still feels like forever in Magic Time™. Glad I actually went out to play sealed this weekend. My boyfriend and I had a great time, and we felt good playing together.

He barely mentionned the Trample (which like you said is a nice anti-durdle tool) and the counters which is IMO a big upgrade compared to Kona . I cant see why it is worse but maybe I just like the trample so much

Thanks for the reviews Tomer! I'm not too keen on vehicles so generally this is not my set, but there's some nice ones. I actually think Hashaton would make a great budget commander because he can make cards that are usually just way too expensive (in mana and therefore cheap in $, like Blazing Archon), or 0/0's that usually require a bunch of counters before they take off (like Threefold Thunderhulk), very playable. That's why I ordered the precon before the decklist came out, and I'm trying to build a Hashaton deck like that.

Daretti is a Mindslaver commander for sure. Return it each combat. Can be the "fair" way once per turn cycle or you're taking extra attacks and taking EVERYONE'S turn.

You can easily make a very JANKY Hashaton deck. Just fill it with jank creatures that are too mana inefficient to play normally. The "force" spells come to mind right away (Tidal Force, Celestial Force, Baleful Force). You'd never play these normally, but for 3 mana they are not super terrible. Maybe Ashen Rider for removal. That kind of thing. I bet you could make a fun deck that is SUPER budget friendly AND tops out around a 5 in power without too much effort. I challenge you do do it :D - My first goofy thought is to "combo" it with Capitoline Triad. Pitch a couple big spells into the graveyard, discard / copy Triad then exile cards to get the emblem that makes all the other copies you have 9/9 :P - Another thought is to load up on creatures that replace themselves like Phyrexian Triniform and Triplicate Titan, or that create many tokens like Threefold Thunderhulk (which gives you a 7/7 and 7 1/1s for 3 mana, :P ). - You could also use this commander to make a very interesting Kozilek, Great Distortion counterspell deck. Biggest issue there is reliably getting Kozilek into hand by Turn 3 or 4. Part of me kind of wants to try this one. (This would probably be VERY high powered, but likely not fast enough for cEDH... maybe though) - Finally, this could make for an interesting Cycling commander. Pay cycling cost to discard and draw and trigger Hasheton. Pay trigger to create copy zombie creature.

Honestly, I think the strongest thing that this card can do is tutoring for someone the vehicles that have +1/+1 counter synergies, and acting as an always available Hardened Scales while tutoring for Bulwark Ox for protection, Lumbering Worldwagon for Ramp, District Mascot for removal, and Thunderous Velocipede for even stronger counter shenanigans

I'm looking to build Vnwxt as sort of a mono-blue edric style deck. Unblockable on turn 1, Vnwxt on turn 2, gingerbrute as well- And then as many coastal piracy effects as you can manage to shove into a deck, alongside cards like curiosity other 1 mana enchantments that become really really efficient card draw once you've got vnwxt online, which is around turns 3-5 when you'd actually want to start playing those coastal piracy effects. Is it good? I don't know! But that's what brewing is for :)

I can see Vnwxt be a ninjas deck. Fill it with a buncha evasive one drops, and you can even attack with Vnwxt at an open opponent if you have a ninja, then you can get to max speed pretty quick. I can see it struggling if you don't put in good payoffs or finishers. However, if you have a lot of cards, you should be able to do something, right?

48:31 I have to disagree about Nissa. Yes, she’s good as just another energy generator in a deck with more colors. But the restriction to just green makes her unique among the energy commanders we’ve seen so far, limiting the card pool you can use while still utilizing what green does best: land ramp and big things. Personally, I’m going to be building her next month once prices go down and it’ll be my first ever energy deck and I’m excited to do that. She’s definitely among the more unique commanders of the set in my opinion.

I like the idea of Samut as a go-wide deck feat Dragon Fodder spells, especially since she can go infinite with Sprout Swarm and max speed, but... 6 mana is almost too much for me. Especially if you can't get a Start Your Engines card down until her. Could be fun, but I'm not into it tbh

Oviya gives other creatures trample that your opponents own, creating a similar impact that goading does. Howeverm it lacks the problem of losing the game at the end since the commander can still bring the heat itself. You could even use pump spells that effect other creatures.

Far Fortune confuses me - it would have been of a standard with a lot of other legendary creatures if the damage boost was unconditional, it hardly needs the restrictions it makes me feel like it was added as an afterthought or have more of the main set mechanic.

Oviya could be interesting to see if one could build a monogreen group slug. Emphasize enabling trample and other buffs for your opponents (when not attacking you) instead of the cheating things in.

I think the issue is she's kill on sight, or she cheats out that ghalta that cheats everything else out, sp it overwhelms the trample. I kinda wish she had a different second ability because I like the first one

One thing people aren’t really talking about when evaluating the start your engine commanders is that, due to how parasitic the mechanic is, the color identity is super important because it determines the max number of cards that interact with speed. For example the blue max speed legendary is kind of DOA as a commander because you only have access to 9 cards in the 99 with start your engines.

I mean, if your Max Speed guy is cheap and on the command zone, you only really need him once on the field to get your effect. The only thing you need then is evasive attackers or some way to damage the opponent in your turn to get the speed going.

@@Thomazbr That's fair, but it does leave you super vulnerable to being blown out by a counterspell if you are relying on your commander alone. If you don't have another way to get speed up and running in hand it's kind of ggs at that point, assuming that your deck is build around having max speed active.

Not sure I understood the strategy for Caelorna in a Stitcher Geralf deck. Geralf creates an X/X zombie based on total power not toughness for creatures you sacrifice. Why would an 0/8 be useful ?

How is 7-8 not high power? If you say you play at a 7-8 but don't play high power, what's the variance and where does high power belong? I've always considered cedh to be 9-10, then high power is like, 7-8. Most casual players don't play at more than a 6 even though they want to assume their deck is a 7. A 1-10 scale doesn't make much sense if you start 1 at "random pile of commons that don't work together". People don't build decks like that. The lowest power decks are generally the "theme" decks with strange deck building restrictions. Most of the time they play worse than precons, though that depends on the theme. I don't consider precons more than 3-4, though some of the recent ones have been much stronger lately. The new Eternal Might one and the RB one from Duskmourn are possibly closer to a 5. If we look at power scaling like that, most people are actually a 6.
