Ripple. My sister and I cost my dad a Premier League title. The year is 2003 and Leeds United are selling Nigel Martyn due to their financial issues with Martyn’s wages being higher than Paul Robinson’s at the time. There are two clubs going in for him, Everton (who he subsequently goes to) and Chelsea. Both clubs were offering a second choice keeper role behind Wright and Cudicini. Myself being 10 at the time, I remember vividly my dad, being the great father he is, asking me how I’d feel if I had to move away down to London. I wasn’t that enthusiastic of the idea as I had my friends up in Leeds and was settled at a school I really enjoyed. My sister was also in the same situation. This meant that my dad chose to sign for Everton and drive across to Liverpool from Leeds every morning for training. Unfortunately for Richard Wright, he got injured a few games into the season and Nige was called up, performed incredibly and then kept the number 1 spot for the subsequent 3 years. Also making some extremely important saves and clean sheets that actually kept Everton from being relegated that season and Leeds went down after Nige left. (So one could say, if one were so inclined, that I helped keep Everton up that year? 😉) Nige was also instrumental in helping Everton finish 4th (Everton’s highest Premier League finish) in his second season. David Moyes then goes on to say that Nigel Martyn is his best ever signing. However if Nige had gone to Chelsea, they wouldn’t have needed to buy Petr Cech (so where does Cech end up then?) and he would’ve been in the Mourinho team that won the league with 15 goals conceded and I feel he could have pushed for the first choice spot from Cudicini like he did against Wright at Everton. So in conclusion, I’m tangentially (kinda) responsible for keeping Everton in the Premier League, costing my father a Premier League title and Petr Cech going to Chelsea. 😂 Only Forwards 🐌

The Ramsdale point is good for Petr Cech, but also totally ignores the fact that keepers start with a much higher position now so they can sweep easier. I think it's easy to compare Cesc and Van Persie and their legacy at Arsenal but they feel very different in my mind. Cesc went home to Barca first of all, he gave everything to Arsenal (I'll always remember him scoring a penatly for us in the champions league with a fully broken foot), captained us through a miserable period, and I feel more sad than anything that we didn't do more to keep him. He also never has a bad thing to say about Arsenal to this day. Wenger rescued Van Persie's career and stood by him while he was injured perpetually, he then had two hot seasons at Arsenal, then immediately left to United, then started showed up on TV badmouthing his old club. Very different legacies in my mind.
