Honestly, I really think Employee Of The Month could be in S tier. I feel like it perfectly encapsulates Spongebob, Squidward, and to a lesser degree Mr. Krabs' philosophies. Spongebob genuinely believes that the award is given to him because of his hard work, and Squidward says that it's just a fake motivator that Krabs made up. But I also like how it also shows us an _inverse_ of the characters' core values. Spongebob becomes so paranoid about losing the award to Squidward that he actively tries to sabotage him, something we almost never see Spongebob do of his own volition. And then because of this, we also see Squidward genuinely give it his all at work. It's also just funny as hell, and it feels like it gets even better as you get older and actually have to work at a job.

Part of what makes Season 1 so unique feeling I think is that it was traditionally cell animated whereas starting with season 2 they did digital animation. That means season 1 has these muted colors and line work that is somewhat jittery between frames. It gives it this rougher look that’s oddly endearing.

I think valentines day is extremely underrated and one of the best s1 episodes in terms of comedy just because of how hysterical Bill Fagerbakke's performance is. I swear his voice in season 1 makes literally anything he does turn into peak comedy.

I also love the sincerity. You can tell just how much SpongeBob and Patrick's friendship matters to the other Maybe Pat is petty for being upset about a handshake, but this is after SpongeBob hyped up his gift. I would be bummed out, too But then he does see the real gift and it is adorable

Out of all the Spongebob seasons, I find this one to have a soft spot in my heart because the art style has a chill vibe when & the pacing isn’t too fast when Spongebob is concerned. Liked how it used cel animation while season 2 onward used digital.

Valentine’s Day isn’t my favorite either, but I think that’s because it doesn’t quite feel like a SpongeBob story. There’s too much real tension and conflict between SpongeBob and Patrick, whereas usually their conflicts aren’t as high stakes. On top of that, everyone loves Patrick, and nobody likes watching pat get his hopes dashed over and over, meanwhile SpongeBob is trying not to reveal the surprise while internally freaking out that sandy is late the entire time. Nobody has any fun in this episode until the very end, and that isn’t fun to watch when you’re watching SpongeBob.

I never thought of The Chaperone being about Sponge and Pearl "dating." He's acting as a chaperone - basically, he's there so Pearl's classmates don't give her a hard time for being alone at prom etc. The only part that's a little weird is the kiss at the end, but even the writers knew so they replaced Sponge with the dummy (still one of the wackiest jokes of season 1).

I think Reef Blower could be argued S tier for how it sets a high quality standard for an episode without dialogue and how a show doesnt NEED to present overused jokes or typical cliche conflict/argument to be good.

I enjoy season 1 for it's chill vibe; it's focused on the atmosphere and slower pace to it's stories/gags, it's a comfort season at the foremost and it succeeds. Favourites-SB-129, Rock Bottom, BubbleStand, Sleepy Time, The Paper, Arrgh, Help Wanted & Walking Small. Least Favourites-Squeeky Boots, Sandys rocket, JellyFishing, I Was A Teenage Gary & Neptune's Spatula.

This is so funny. I would have put SB-129 at B tear and I Was A Teenage Gary at least to A. I enjoyed the morbid and disturbing transition from Spongebob into a snail really much while nowadays, I think (thanks to channels like these) SB-129 is overhyped (and I know, it's not a Season 1 episode, but Squidward in Clarinetland is definitely one that I would put in S tier because I enjoy stuff that is so freaking out there like this episode XD). lol

I honestly don't get the hate for Valentine's Day. Yes, you can say Patrick went too far, but that was after Spongebob spent most of the episode hyping up the gift and kept raising his expectations. Like there's a reason they show Patrick starting the episode excited as hell when he thinks Spongebob's gift was a quarter and at the end when he said Spongebob didn't have to do all this for him. There's clear cause and effect, just from Spongebob having far better motives than when Squidward's plans backfire like in Naughty Nautical Neighbors.

31:02 I think you’re looking for minimalist. And for me, I’d put Karate Choppers in B. Like, I don’t think Mr. Krabs is that unjustified in his reaction considering SpongeBob karate chopped a customer through the floor and attacked him in the bathroom. The fact he wasn’t fired on the spot after attacking a customer is more patience than any real world boss would give an employee. Yeah, his reaction when Sandy is doing karate around Spongebob is harsh, but he gets the facts explained and gives Sponge a second chance pretty quickly. So I don’t think he’s that unfair a boss, least of all compared to middle seasons. And just the karate antics SpongeBob and Sandy get into outweigh the bad stuff, IMO. And I’d personally put Mermaid Man 2 in B or A. I liked the jokes it had, and also always preferred SpongeBob getting a happy ending with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy rather than SpongeBob getting thrown out, even if he achieved his goal of getting them out of retirement.
