I'm always surprised seeing HoMM V so high. It's so goddamn slow, AI takes 5 minutes per turn on bigger maps. There is a reason why campaigns are straight paths because AI gets overwhelmed with open maps. And being forced to simple, small maps kinda sucks. I once made a proper time comparison between HoMM III and V and for similar maps it took 3x more time to play HoMM V, insane difference. One of those games where technical shortcomings really affect the feeling of it.

Heroes 4 original campaign has by far the best writing, surpassing even some narrative driven rpg games, and it puts every other turn based strategy game story to shame.

Yes, vanilla H4 campaigns are epic. Like reading an interactive book. Especially Death and Chaos. (Sadly the expansions campaigns are trash.)

​@@ffarkasm Oh you don't even want to know how cheated I felt back in the day when I found out there's TWO MORE full campaign expansion packs, only to be met with SPAZZ MADICUZZ and other "story" bits that makes the story of even the first Heroes to be like reading the Lord of the Rings in comparison.

I was always more of an Age of Wonders player, but I do like and respect Heroes games! So far, AoW hasn't had a bad game in the series.

HoMM 2 will always bring me memories of my childhood doing hot seat with my best friends around a single computer. It was the first PC game I remember getting into in any sort of passionate way. 3 and 5 of course are amazing themselves for different reasons. Im really hoping the one in development is at least able to reach 5's stature.

My personal favorite would probably still be homm2 due to how they nailed perfectly both music and creature design, but gameplay wise homm3 it's the best, though homm5 is also really fun. Honestly, everything up to the 5 is good, it's after that that things start to go downhill...

The most remarkable thing about 2 and 3 IMO, is how they manage to build upon the previous instalment. H3 manages to improve upon H2 almost as much as H2 improves on H1. And the other 'sequels' just don't seem to be able to reproduce this. And yes, H2 is my favorite as well, even though H3's gameplay is more evolved and refined. It's such a shame The Succession Wars project for H3 got stuck in limbo. Having the H2 setting, units, art style, factions and campaigns in an H3 engine would be my best of both worlds game.

Hello there, Homm3 because of mods like Hota which sounds more an unofficial expansion for me, it would be number 1 then Homm5 as you mentioned because of abilities and probably few mods. Even though that I did try others for quite a time. Anyway, very great list and thank you for the video 👍

I could never figure out the Heroes games after 4, so the 3DO ones are the best to me, and I iagree 3 is the best of the lot. It's too bad 3DO went belly up, because if they'd kept the helm I'm certain the games would have been better. One note I'll make about games in general is developers seem to think making games more complex is a good idea. No, keep them fun. Sometimes the simpler games are more fun. 3 is better than 4 for this reason. 4 revamped a whole pile of stuff that didn't need to be done. Maybe that was why it bombed in comparison with 3 and the studio went under.

Heroes V ... The only Heroes Game i really played... i own VI aswell but it is nothing compared to V... and... having spend so much Time just watching the Main Screen of the Priest and the Archdemon Duking it out with a fitting Mainscreen Music... and also Human City Theme slapped hard never forgot the Time

I'm torn about my order. My main issue III isn't number one is being bitter the planned expansion that was supposed to integrate more of the franchise's scifi elements got scrapped due to Heroes only fans complaining, and I've heard sending death threats in some cases. I wanted more of the Might and Magic franchise's scifi elements in the Heroes games from when I first played through Heroes II and confirmed they weren't in it (I played Heroes I some first but didn't actually finish it until many years later due to RL issues)

It's always refreshing to find people out there that share one's opinion. Especially on the HoMM games. I would say the only change/swap I would do is to place HoMM1 above HoMM4. Mostly because I like it's whimsical art style and regarding its flaws.....well, it was the first one to come. If it made mistakes, it had all the rights to make them. AND.... it gave us HoMM2! 4 though.... it came after the best one, and it's very hard to imagine justifications for the choices made in making it, after seemingly finding the winning formula in 3. As for the games after 5, I think the developers just didn't understand the essence of HoMM games and what made them attractive to their core audience. They both feel like what someone else thought a Heroes game should be like. And I guess that is fair, and each developer should take that approach, but it doesn't mean we as players should like it. Finally, although I agree and understand WHY H3 is the best of them all, for me, the overall atmosphere, art style, faction and unit balance (or lack of), unit roster and sheer sentiment, make H2 my favorite game. HoMM 3 is the best for me and I think for most fans. I am giving you kudos for putting HoMM II on 2nd. This game shaped what Heroes are today: spell and magic system, artifacts, heroes’ skills, creature upgrades to name just a few. HoMM V had really great mechanics and magic system, but I always disliked “WoW -like” graphic style which was very fashionable in the early 2000’s and I personally never liked. Overall it was a good game. I kinda agree with your list. HoMM VI and VII like IV were rushed and feel like unfinished products. Hopefully a new Heroes Olden Era will be better.

I never played 4, so for me the most innovative are 5 and 6 : 1 is a first try, 2 and 3 are a refinement on the formula. 7 just does 3 again, but badly. I've never found mixing & matching different factions creatures that good because of the heavy moral penalty so each faction having its own mechanics and identity was a good move for me, and the turn system and hero progression were the best in 5. 6 had the best creatures (no terrible waste of space that you recruit just to fill the slot) but they went too hard in simplifying the economy

I love how he said it at the end...heroes of might and magic III, there was never really doubt was there...NOpe there was not. Never played any other besides heroes III and I never would. Still just few days ago finished my last map...have been playing it since the 95'

I love heroes 4 from story telling point and it is more rpgish than strategy (and high level hero solo defeating entire armies). Tip - there is hd mod for full screen 7 was killed by ubisoft finances, there is sad story there. 6 was killed by ubisoft forcing online 1 was first for me but when 2 was released there was no going back 2,5,3 - immortal legends :)

Can't really argue with the order... maybe swap 4 & 5 around because UBISOFT, but 2 & 3 by far the best. Hopefully Olden Era can tap in to some of that greatness.

Heroes 5 is my top one for singleplayer, heroes 3 is far better for multiplayer and heroes 2 will always have a special place in my heart. Heroes 4 and 6 had a few things i liked, but were not good, heroes 1 is just an unpolished version of heroes 2 and I never really played heroes 7, because I hate the Ubisoft launcher.

H4 is good in RPG style gameplay, not tactical and strategical level.
