In my first non-music, non-stream video in almost 2 years, I decided to rank every single Mario Kart track theme. It is over 2 hours long. I have opinions.

My 64-loving opinion is really feeling the heat on this one, because for pretty much all of your remarks (barring DK's Jungle Parkway, Banshee Boardwalk, and the Battle theme, which I don't think were that good to begin with) I feel like shouting "that's the point!" It's understated, it's a little muted, but the point is that the melodies stick with you. This is a game where playing with more than two people means the music simply can't play, but you and your buddies can do an impromptu a capella rendition of, say, the Raceway theme or Choco Mountain without skipping a beat. It also has the best "results" theme in the series, though that's not a terribly high bar to clear.

Re: MKDS Rainbow Road: While yes, it is a very by-the-numbers rainbow road theme, the loop is actually twice as long as most people realize. While the second loop is very similar, some subtle reharmonization of the a section melody does occurr, and it's something you'll appreciate when you notice it. Personally, I think that Double Dash has the weakest Rainbow Road theme. Yes, it's a classic, but it's the most by the books of the rainbow road themes IMO.

Wow! Okay so, I originally threw this on for some background noise, but I must admit, you had me HOOKED dude, in a way I didn't expect 2 hrs of music rankings could. This video is just MASTERFULLY edited like, holy crap. The part with the piranha pipeline or whatever it's called where you edited in the "artist's rendition" because you didn't have access to record your own gameplay??? I was BUSTING UP soooo hard omg hahaha. You did NOT have to go so hard, but you did and this video is aaaaall the better for it. I honestly almost never comment on KZbin videos but i needed to let you know how superbly edited and written and delivered this whole video was, start to finish. Loved all the humor, you articulated your actual points super well even to someone like me with very minimal musical knowledge, and it was a treat to watch (yes, WATCH, with my eyes glued to the screen and no secondary activity going on) the entire way through, and i super appreciate all the care and effort you clearly put into every aspect of this. Interesting video, liked the commentary from someone who probably knows more about music than most of us. Since you asked, I do like Block Plaza. It's nowhere near my #1 but I think it's funny. I'd recommend listening to the Tour versions of Sydney Sprint and Los Angeles Laps sometime - they are very different from the 8DX versions. I'd like to see what you think.

Absolutely LOVED this video. As a fellow music nerd who adores Mario Kart's soundtracks, I've wanted to make a video like this for a while, but honestly, I don't think I will because this analysis was so much deeper than I ever could have hoped for. I absolutely loved how much detail you gave not just to the songs' vibes, but to the specific techniques the composers used to make each song "work." Great editing and fantastic sense of humor as well! Definitely earned a subscription on that. Hope you make more videos like this for other games/franchises. :)

I would like to point out that, while playing MKDS with headphones, I heard some Pianta sound effects on Delfino Square. I’m not sure if that was a part of the OST or not, but I still think it’s a cool detail. Also, swap DS and Wii’s Rainbow Road themes and you’ve basically got my list.

Those Pianta noises are in Wii's version too. My guess is that they're separate audio files from the song that are programmed to play when the piantas are nearby. My programming knowledge only amounts to two high school computer science classes, though, so it might be good for someone else to confirm.

One of the best music rankings I've seen. You combined your own opinion with concrete analysis and still managed to make it entertaining and fun. Those two hours passed at just the right speed. Also, I'm SO happy to see my favorite Wii songs get some recognition, especially Dry Dry Ruins. My main disagreement is that I'm a complete sucker for the rock-style themes -- namely Rock Rock Mountain, London Loop, and GBA Bowser Castle -- and as such feel they're a tad underrated, especially Rock Rock Mountain, but that amounts to personal taste.

As somebody not too familiar with the themes, it was fun to have this video on in the background and be able to guess the course style based solely off its scale/instrumentation/orchestration. Also Choco Mountain is far too low. It is easily in my top 5.

Daisy Hills is really underrated. One of my favorite Mariokart courses ever. This track was the first one I played that really showed how cool the glider mechanic was, and 11 year old me loved it from first sight. Also, some of these courses I am legitimately traumatized by, namely Piranha Plant Slide, Shy Guy Mountain, Thwomp Ruins, Bone Dry Dunes, and some others. Why you ask? 200cc. That is all.

Very fun analysis (even if I hate so many of your opinions) Block Plaza somehow manages to be a calming AND exciting retro-cafe-speedcore hybrid I COMPLETELY adore it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to feel unhappy when listening to Choco Mountain. From the uplifting harmonica to the sneaky baseball-halftime-show-ass organ its so crazy to think someone could be as SOULESS to not be completely charmed by it GBA Rainbow Road Deserved so much better and I don't know how to put my disappointment into words DS rainbow road has what is -in my opinion- the second most satisfying choruses of all the rainbow roads (but I can forgive this one cuz the rest of this song can be a but slow to get to its climax) GCN Rainbow got torn apart completely for doing exactly what 3DS rainbow road does but so much better I CANNOT BELIEVE ANYONE can rank Mario Kart Stadium this highly. In my head, it is the most generic of generic songs in the entire series and I was baffled to see Mario Circuit as high as it was, and lost my shit when I saw how insanely high you put this one Madrid is a fucking masterpiece that starts out riddled in conflict in the same way Spanish dance often creates this sort of spicy conflict between partners, locked in synchronized battle, before the chorus kicks in with some incredible hits, some satisfying backing applause pushing the melody forward and the most triumphant tone imaginable as the conflict reaches its dramatic peak Moonview Highway's placement was well earned, but I NEED to emphasize how heavily the brass hits completely steal the show at the chorus in the 8 deluxe version. They have the impact of a super hero punching a bad guy in the face on a Saturday morning cartoon 3DS Rainbow Road is overhyped as hell and I will never understand its appeal and why it tops every single list (especially with how contrasting the tone it has is compared to 64.) The rest of the list... is actually pretty respectful though. I was pleasantly suprised to see berlin byways get the love it so deserves and thwomp desert was a pleasant surprise that I never realized just how much I slept on

I just watched two hours of video so of course something long comes out, but this is basically just recommendations for you. Welcome back! I love the effort you put into the editing; I can really tell you are both a musician and that you care from how you edited everything to the beat (both the visuals, but also if you skipped ahead in a song or between variants, it was on measure lines which prevented me a headache). I can't really say anything about the opinions, but I would like to address the Tour soundtrack (thanks for reviewing Pipeline, and then complimenting it during the Pipeway section at 1:38:04): The Tour soundtrack is full of songs that sound the same as a previous version, which makes it really difficult to go onto KZbin and find the actually interesting songs. Almost none of the good ones should be able to change your rankings, but I'll list a few that I think you should listen to to get a better perspective. Tour surprisingly remade a lot of GBA songs in ways that actually upgrade the song, and so I think a few of them are worth a listen (even if you didn't talk about them in the video). I'll skip a lot of songs that sound almost exactly like the BCP version: - Tokyo Blur: It's similar to the remake, but the horns have weirder chords so you miiiiight appreciate that. I promise the list gets more interesting. - LA Laps: Definitely listen to this one, the remake isn't even close to the original (which is why the remake was also very divisive). - Sydney Sprint: More MIDI like the rest, but the solos are also cool (and a little more natural). It's less in your face, and has more piano. - Amsterdam Drift: No jaw harp and more tame, but it has a custom looping point that they took out for the BCP for some reason. - Do NOT listen to Squeaky Clean Sprint. The other sprint did a good job with a 'saxophone' that sounds a little nostalgic, this one sounds like garbage. - GBA Boo Lake: I'd describe it as taking the strings that are in 8's arrangement, but exercising self-control with the drums and melodic instrumentation. - GBA Sky Garden: __100% must listen__. It goes in the exact opposite direction to the BCP, and still actually transforms the song. You didn't need to hear it before, but now... Listening to all of the Tour cities on KZbin would be a decent way to appreciate the newer versions, and where they came from. That should take between 1/8 and 1/4 of the time it took to watch this video, and a much smaller portion of the time it took to make. I actually like the original better for a handful of them, so that could happen too. Finally, although I've tried to keep my own rankings out of this since there are hundreds of songs, as a Super Bell Subway fan, it hurts me when people compliment the highlight reel version of Dolphin Shoals without even thinking about the highlight reel version that Subway has (I think a lot of people don't even realize it has one!). Kazumi Totaka actually does the vibraphone for Subway (uncredited), and both the vibraphone and accordion solos go really hard. I don't think Subway needs a higher spot, but I really wish you had acknowledged the existence of the extended version. Thanks for either reading or skipping to the end! Have a wonderful day. As someone who played Mario Kart Tour, it's both exciting and saddening to see Berlin and Amsterdam ranked so high. My 3 favorite Tour city track themes are LA Laps, Amsterdam Drift, and Berlin Byways. And Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just changes so much about them. - LA Laps was one of the weirdest Mario Kart songs I've ever heard. With odd vocals and a weirdly experimental feeling to it. MK8DX's may be a better song, but it's just much more forgettable to me. The original's weirdness makes it reign supreme - I loved Amsterdam Drift for its simplicity. It's so simple and joyful and I can't help but love it. MK8DX complicated it with a whistle, and a bunch of obnoxious childish instruments. It changes the feel of the song to feel more like a bustling market or jovial festival, which is fine, but it completely removes why I loved the original. It also CUTS OUT LIKE 10 SECONDS OF MUSIC BEFORE THE LOOP?? I swear I'm literally the only person who has ever noticed this. I remember being extremely disappointed when it came to the Booster Course Pass and it just didn't play. No one I've told seems to care, but it's just criminal that they cut the song short. I wonder if the music team even noticed. - Berlin Byways is probably in my top 10 Mario Kart songs. It's so good that it's even my ringtone on my phone. The MK8DX version is good, but it goes for a different vibe. The mobile version is so so so so freaking good though. The grating synths opening up the track, the little pops in the middle, and the lower pitched boom of the symphony. It's all so fantastic. I still love the MK8DX version for what it is, but man, the original Tour version is so much better to me. Basically every other Tour track is better in MK8DX. London Loop went from one of the most forgettable to actually a pretty solid song. The live instruments really helped improve a lot of the painfully midi-feelings of the originals.

The fact that the worst track in Wii's special cup ranked as #17 speaks volumes to how great that cup is, dry dry ruins, moonview highway, wii bowser castle are some of my favorite tracks in the entire series, and it ends with arguably the best track entirely with wii rainbow road. For me it isnt just #1 musically, but overall it is still my #1 track. Wii's special cup really lives up to its name of being special.

Wait, did you skip Galaxy Colosseum from Mario Kart Wii, or did I miss it in the ranking? It's super obscure since the track was only ever available in online tournaments, so I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't included but I love the music there so I was curious where it would be ranked! Banshee Boardwalk is this low!?!? The eerie tone is absolutely perfect and the sounds were amazingly implemented. Truly creepy, and does not deserve such a low placement. Even ghost valley is higher when it has that stupidly annoying high pitched sound that doesn’t sound scary at all.

It's so weird to me to see Mute City and Big Blue so far apart on the chart. For me the two themes are very similar, with a slight edge being given to Big Blue. Yet here Mute City is nearly 20 places above Big Blue. It is very possible I'm just the world's biggest sucker for rock tracks, given I practically grew up on Crush 40 final boss themes.
