I spent over 10 years coaching in my local area from under 7s up to under 15s. I should say I live just north of Portsmouth on the south coast. With the league, cups and tournaments we played probably 50+ games a season. In all that time not once did we see any scouts or were contacted by any of our local teams ( Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth plus many lower and non league teams ). Despite winning many promotions, leagues and tournaments they seemed to only be interested in certain fashionable teams. But Chelsea were a completely different organisation absolutely class. We saw their scouts regularly we knew them by name and 7 of our players ended up in their academies.

Derrick Ombass. I'm a Chelsea fan who likes to follow the academy teams as much as possible. Yes, Chelsea's academy over the last decade has been very impressive but so too has Man.City's academy & their development of young players. In fact there was a good rivalry between Chelsea's & City's academies for a few years. For three seasons in a row, 14/15, 15/16, 16/17, Chelsea & City contested the FA Youth Cup final. Chelsea managed to win all three times but City eventually got some revenge when defeating Chelsea in the 19/20 final to finally get their hands on the most prestigious non-first team competition that we have in England. Chelsea's dominance has dropped off a bit in the last 2/3 years. It had to at some point, it's not realistic to think one club can remain dominant indefinitely. It's incredible that Chelsea's academy was able to keep the conveyor belt going for as long as they did. Four times Chelsea's U19's have reached the finals week of the Uefa Youth Cup that is held next to Uefa's headquarters in Switzerland every Easter time. The two semi-finals on the Friday & the final on the Monday. Chelsea have reached the final 4 times, winning the tournament twice & coming R/U twice. No other English academy has managed to reach the semi's or the final as of yet. I'm expecting Man City's academy to do so in the near future though. The one big negative regarding Chelsea's academy for quite a few years was how none of their academy players was being given a decent enough opportunity to become established in the first team. Thankfully though this eventually changed & in the last few years several youngsters from the academy have become established in the first team. Against AC Milan in the CL last week half the outfield players were from the academy (& it would have been 6 players if Mount hadn't been subbed off). Unfortunately though the club can't keep all of them at home. The summer before last, for example, the club sold 4 academy players for transfer fees totalling £80 million. There's no doubt a few gems have gotten away over the years. In the summer of 2019 the club lost 16 year old Jamal Musiala to Bayern Munich. To rub salt into the wounds he decided shortly after leaving Chelsea that he would represent Germany & not England (he has a German grandfather). He's still only 19 but already has 17 caps for Germany & has played over 100 games for Bayern's first team. As if losing De Bruyne & Salah some years back when we didn't need to wasn't bad enough.
