I LOVE the M3 Infrared. The thing about it is that it lets you play a very aggressive assault style as a sniper/pathfinder. Pop down a spawn beacon and park yourself just inside a capture point, and enemies can’t figure out where they are getting shot from because of the silencer and lack of directional hit marker. Yes, you can play aggressive sniper role with other guns, but none are silenced like this one, and that feature alone more than makes up for any other shortcomings. Kill a few, let them see your location on the kill cam, then reposition yourself. 9 times out of 10 they spawn in and rush right over to where you were, and you just pick them off again. I think people HATE getting killed by this gun, they start playing angrily and that never works lol. If they do happen to locate and swarm you, which is typically how I end up getting whacked while playing as this class (that or a friggin tank) just respawn at your beacon, rinse and repeat. Very often I can take over a flag solo against a bunch of defending assault players with my gold M3 as an aggressive stealth pathfinder.

Good to see the M1 got a hardy recommendation. I used it constantly as a close quarters rifle since it came out back in chapter 5 and it stands as my most used rifle sitting at just under 1,500 kills.

The odd thing about the infrared sniper is that irl it was impossible to carry it around, because one as you mentioned it's pretty dam big and two you have to carry a battery around to make the scope operational

tip for the m1a1 carbine: use the 3x scope and try to hit headshots, headshots are very easy to hit with that scope and if you have a good triggerfinger it will help you a lot.

I like the M1 Garand a lot. Also Gewehr 43 and Ag/m 42 are nice. I try to stay at a decent range so the specialization extending or improving effective range makes a difference for me. M1 Garand with Heavy Load Spec has same killing TTK range as Gewehr 43. Only drawback is 2 less bullets per reload than Gewehr 43.

The turner SMLE has spec for increased ammo capacity to make it 20 rounds although slower reload but larger initial capacity. Damage is close to m1 grand and ammo capacity more than double the amount.

Going to start off and say the Selbstlader M1916 is my favorite semi auto for the Assault Class. And I have NO trouble waxing people up close. The recoil thing is a non issue at range as you often can't spam shots accurately and if you want to do that, that's what the Bi-Pod is for. But on the move and on the go, it's very competitive still because it's damage output but also it's high round counts. The Gewher 1-5 compared to say the M1 Carbine or Ag.42 is easily the best of the 3. M1 Carbine being the exception for up close because of the higher ROF. The recoil on the Gewher 1-5 is low or low enough that spam firing at max ROF and being accurate is no chore and can easily be worked into the mid range roles. Sure the Ag.42 has a higher bullet velocity at range and a longer range for the 3 hit kill potential, but it's just all around a worse M1 Carbine and the Gewher 1-5 being better than the M1 as a whole makes the Ag.42 the worst rifle on this list. I've toyed around with the Johnson a bit and much like the Selbstlader M196 yes it has the same kill potential but with a lower recoil pattern, it falls short to the Selbstlader to me because of the potential for both the bi-pod at long range and the larger magazine capacity for extended engagements. I like it better than the M1 Garand or the Gewher 43 and Karbin but not as much as the Selbstlader. So for the Turner vs MAS I'd say it depends on how you play. With the MAS if you want to go for accuracy at range it's better. However, the Turner can get a 20 round magazine which makes it much better at the mid-close range scenarios. The reload time is horrendously long with that 20 round but it reloads in 5 round intervals so for topping off after an engagement it's not so bad. With the detachable magazine specialization I found it to be quicker than the MAS on the tactical reload but the empty about the same. I like both guns and I can't say one is better than the other as like mentioned it depends on what you want to do. I prefer to be a bit more aggressive so I found the Turner to better suited to my play style. I just can't accept the Ag.42 being better than the M1 Carbine. Sure, 4 hit kill out to 100 meters but at that range the other semi auto rifles have it beat on damage profiles and are more accurate. Up close, yeah it can spam fire but even the basic M1 Carbine has 5 more shots which could be 1-2 more potential kills and with the 30 round magazine it's even better. Comparing it to the Gewher 1-5, it has the potential to be better when standing on each other's toes by ROF alone but personal experience with it I almost always won the gunfight using the Gehwer 1-5. It's probably the worst on the list and I'm not counting the M3. I still think for the rifles closest to the Gewher 43 which would be the M1 Garand, Johnson, Selbstlader, and Karbin, the Karbin or Garand beat the Gewher 43. Gewher only beats the Karbin on capacity by 1 round IF you go with detachable magazines. Otherwise the Karbin beats it on accuracy as does the Garand and the Garand beats it on ROF at the cost of 2-3 rounds. The Johnson and Selbstlader lose on ROF but make up for it in general accuracy and overall performance at range. When everyone else was spamming the Gewher 43 at launch I was rocking them with the Selbstlader quite often. I get why people like it, but I just don't see it as the best semi auto rifle even taking into account how good it once was.
