It's the one I get back most to but it has flaws as well. The diplomacy system is worthless. Alliances mean nothing and you often can't get the AI to accept many deals that any reasonable human player would accept immediately. The dynamics of crusades vs jihads is also broken since there are only 3 Muslim countries vs a dozen Catholic ones. AI initiated Crusades often succeed unless you the player personally oppose them but I have never seen an AI initiated Jihad succeed except the one for taking Baghdad from rebels.

Top 3 is pretty expected. Obviously Warhammer 2 is the most popular these days but it wasn't quite as well received when it was new, especially before Mortal Empires was added. It's just gotten an enormous amount of great updates and DLC content in the last few years which has massively increased its variety, depth and replayability. However, there should still be older reviews lying around on Steam so I didn't expect it to beat Rome 1 or Medieval 2 on there because those games are already super well received by virtually everyone for a very long time already due to how brilliant they were for their respective time periods

You can't really argue with that Top 5: Napoleon: The best of the games focusing on gun/artillery based warfare. Shogun 2: The best of the games set in the far east. Warhammer 2: The best game with fantasy elements and the best of the most recent releases. Rome 1/Medieval 2: Most people's favourites and the games that helped make the series the powerhouse it has become. Rome 2's launch and Attila's unforgiving campaign mechanics meant they never really had a shot. Would be interested if you did one of these for the big DLC expansions (curious whether Caesar in Gaul or Rise of the Republic can compete with the stuff from Warhammer 2!)

Through this, the AI could bring you realy fast into food shortages and you could bring the Ai into food shortages. It creates a certain kind of dynamiks i think. The game is much faster especcialy since you don't have to think about buildings in minor settlements all that much. Also most minor settlements are in reach of major settlements and therefore armies. So when you don't play to agressive and don't overexpand, this system is pretty balanced. I’d say medieval 3 would come first since it’s easier and Victoria/empire 2 would have to be a real quality title and quality has subjectively been dropping. Should Victoria ever come it would have to be worked on for at least 3 years to make it enjoyable and done right considering how much warfare technology and uniforms had changed in the time. But if it were done right I do believe it could be the title with they best expansions. Primarily looking at 2 player campaigns. Lord knows mods could do to such a title. Anyway Medieval 3 would just be far easier that’s my conclusion.

I know. The video was looking at Steam Reviews. You also have to consider, that if I was to go by numbers, then thereally old titles would be at a mssive disadvantage as they released on disc first. And Newer titles will have the disadvantage of having enough time to build a fan base. So, if i did take the maount of reviews into account, then it would greatly favour the Empire - Attila TW games over the others. As said throughout, my system is not perfect, and, using only Steam data, no system is perfect.

@@martindarebnik4455 The fact you had captains, and don't need generals to move an army. That your upgrades on your units, meaning armor, actually show that your units got armor. Cavalry charges (though they fixed them now luckily) actually had an impact. Units, when fighting, actually team up in combat. (you could have one guy fighting someone and another guy would stab him from the back.) Units had animations for killing others without fucking up the combat like in rome 2, where the animations only play in 1v1 causing weird shuffling. You had to actually recruit a diplomat and send it over to another faction to talk to them, instead of clicking a button. Which I'll admit is easier, but I didn't mind having to move a diplomat around.

@Prince_of_Dor-lomin4 жыл бұрын
@@martindarebnik4455 Oh I agree with that. I didn't mean to imply that there has been no innovation whatsoever. Warhammer is really awesome, the skill trees are an improvement and the old games didn't have them. It's just that from a realistic standpoint I think the old games did more. I mean you used to have to build roads. So your troops could walk faster, or watchtowers to get line of sight. All of that is still gone. I will also say that when CA improves something, they also downgrade another thing. Examples are sieges and naval battles. In Warhammer 2 sieges are really really boring, and naval battles aren't naval battles. They're land battles. Another thing they're fond of doing is, claiming they've added new things, when the old games already had them before. Renaming cities for example. Or trading regions. They can certainly innovate, they just need to stop removing the old stuff. Also to be clear. I don't hate the newer games. I just prefer the older ones.

Maybe you should combine total downloads also to get more accurate ratings

Issue there is, then you have to take into account the date of release, and those that released on disc - so the data would then be super one sided for the Empire - Attila Era.

I can't stand this mainstream critique of Shogun 2 that everybody has: "The units are the same". Aside from the fact that it makes sense from a historical standpoint, the fact that the units are similar is exactly why Shogun 2 is unrivaled to me. The greatest strength of Shogun 2 is balance and challenge. You can not beat the game by simply having better units while at the same time you can beat it with the cheapest units in the game and with every campaign you feel that your skills have trully improved. The replayability comes from the challenge the game offers, but not unnecessary challenge. You don't have huge garrisons in every city, you don't have a passive AI that camps a city with 2 stacks for the entire game, you don't have hoards that respawn. I get that this is a personal preference but I don't know how many strategy games manage to have massive content, smart AI and perfect optimization all at the same time. Blaming Shogun 2 for not having a lot of units is like blaming chess for only having two sides.

Honestly, I hate Medieval 2. I never liked the castle system, and battles just feel like drawn out melee slogs.

I disagree so much, thrones of britannia was a great expérience for me and all the new mechanic in the campaign made it clearly one of the most interesting for its internal and external diplomacy

well for all his faults (empire) i can still enjoy it how it is but i do see the rot was setting in then and there. including napoleon that brought me into the game serie. and medieval and rome 1 ar just simply the best but i would prefer medieva above rome 1. and setting empire/napoleon, but that is ofcourse a personal interest in time periods
