Boxer here. I would have put only the jab as S tier and the cross and hook as A tier just to distinguish how important the jab is. Agree 100% with this It's your most thrown punch, it's your fastest punch, your longest punch, it sets up every other punch by landing or even just obscuring their vision if you smother them with it, you can throw it while moving in any direction, you can condition people with a soft jab and when you need to hit them with a hard one they wont expect it- like.. it's not even close. it NEEDS to be in its own tier above the rest.

Getting to this a year late, but who knows? 1 inch punch is a training tool, not something you use in a fight. It's about training your body to deliver maximum power over the shortest distance. Ideally, you should be able to do it with any part of your body (shoulder, back, hip, butt, whatever) and at no range. Bruce was awesome, but never went deep enough to learn that. Look up a dude named Chen Bu if you want to see some good demonstrations of inch power type stuff. You'll like him, Seth. He's chubby. And surprising.

I think putting the one-inch punch in F tier as it's generally presented is perfectly reasonable. My understanding of it is that it was never meant as a combative technique per se, but rather as a demonstration or exercise to remind students of proper form. If I'm not mistaken, one of Icy Mike's collabs with Sergio had the latter demonstrating the practical application of the one-inch punch and it wasn't like what people actually picture when it's done in demos. Still one thing: It is actually a question of the rules about "backfist or hammerfist": In some Kickboxing games it is NOT allowed to use the Hammerfist, because you have to hit with the padding of the glove like you would with a backfist. (in MMA it is both allowed). One reason I would prefer a hammerfist in both gloved and bareknuckle situations is the different position of the elbow and the forearm. It may be very effective to strike with your knuckles doing a backfist, but you have more control with a hammerfist, can decide how much you extend your arm, also your elbow joint and fist is in better position to prevent injuring yourself. And of course, your forearm bone may still inflict some damage if your hammerfist is to close.

Yea I realized that while editing but nobody comments if I fix it lol

Nevermind. I think the "tier"-rating shouldn't even be taken too serious, but is a good thing for everyone to exchange their opinions. I mean: What punches work best for someone is very dependend on the game he is in, but also on individual skills and even body features. Also there are different versions of some punches that may work better or worse, like "horizontal jab" or "vertical jab". "corkscrew jab and cross" and so on.

Example: Since you are crosstraining in Muay Thai now, have you already seen how some Muay Thai guys punch their jab and cross? because their fist are often horizontal in their guard, they rotate their fist with the thumb pointing to the floor at the ending point, to keep it real straight. Sometimes punching mechanics are depending on the guard (and hand rotation in it) or stance of a fighter.

All punching techniques are good. Internal punches are most effective. Liver kidney, and spleen punches. Strikes to the eyes nose, and throat are also effective. A punch is a punch. The application and target are the key factors that must be considered.

When learning JKD, I was taught to throw a hook punch with my fist vertical and not horizontal and the footwork was less static. Whacking pads like that felt great; I'd be interested to see you play with it and see what you think of it!

The spinning back fist is far from slow, unless you suck. It's S-tier. It's the most useful technique I know. I've won multiple matches and tournaments with it. It's very versatile and applicable. The key is to not throw it with that awkward step, but more by staying still and taking the step after landing/missing. It's a very underrated and misunderstood punch. When do right no can defend.

@@SenseiSeth Glad I'm getting into boxing. I tried it for a month a while back and got back into it after watching your video on martial art tiers. Striking is so different. It's not harder than wrestling or judo but just a different kind of exhausting. Whereas grappling is like constantly and explosively lifting while moving dynamically as if you're muscles are constantly being pushed to the limit. Boxing is more like jogging up a hill with increasing weight the further you travel. While someone punches you. It's mental as heck.

The topic of this video is so stupid that I refuse to watch it out of principle! How can you rate punches on a tier list? Its like rating tools in your toolbox! Is a hammer better than a screwdriver? No, because they are used for different things! The usefulness of the tools depends on the situation and how well you can use them. It has almost nothing to do with the tool itself! Are you fighting a tall guy, a short guy, a guy with long arms or short arms, southpaw etc? Does he have a loose guard or a tight guard or a low guard or a high guard etc etc. These things determine how good a punch is, not the punch itself.
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty easy to rate what’s in your toolbox.. some things are way more useful than others. How often does the AVERAGE PERSON need a pair of vice grip pliers compared to a screwdriver?? It’s pretty easy to answer. Statistics are present everywhere
@DaXia3334 жыл бұрын
@@SenseiSeth Uhh...ok? So because something is used more frequently than something else, its better? So glasses are better than hearing aids? I mean glasses are way more common. China is better than USA because there are more Chinese people. Crutches are better than wheelchairs. Cars are better than planes, the list goes on. If feel sorry for you if you dont understand how statistically flawed your "logic" is. The "average fighter" will on average have better punches depending on his build, maybe he has short arms and can do sick uppercuts, maybe he has long arms and can do sick jabs. Maybe he has a lot of short twitch muscles and can generate extreme power with his right cross. He will jab more to set it up, but its the cross that KOs the opponent. Is the jab more useful than the cross or do they both depend on and compliment each other?
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
Meanwhile in China to the average person, glasses NOR hearing aids are very useful tbh. That’s how average works
@DaXia3334 жыл бұрын
@@SenseiSeth Thanks for clearing that up. Lets compare something that the average person uses. Whats best, shoes or shirts? How about cars. A Honda civic vs a Ferrari F60. Since most people cant afford a Ferrari, Hondas are obviously better cars than Ferraris, right? BJJ vs Kungfu? Since more people in the world practice Kungfu than BJJ, eagleclaw would obviously score higher on a list of effective techniques compared to a rear naked choke since it would be useful to more practitioners, or as you put it, "the AVERAGE PERSON". How about women? Are blondes prettier than women with darker hair? Some people would argue that everything is relative, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all kinds of bullcrap. Obviously those people are wrong. Nothing is situational and there is a clear cut tier list for everything. You keep using your S+ tier screwdriver to drive nails, I will use my hammer for that.
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
Well yes, since most people don’t have the skill or money to drive a Ferrari, you could argue that Hondas are better for the world than Ferrari’s

I was expecting to strongly disagree with at least one decision here... but I don't. I think you underestimate the liver shot a little (Shovel Hook). I would've rated it at least a B, as having a fight ending blow at both elevations makes you twice as dangerous. But that could just be chalked up to a difference in experience. I'm a only boxer, so I don't know the danger of throwing that against someone who's ready to kick me in the head, and I also don't know what other body-knockouts are available to a kick-boxer.

@nuclearlefthook50084 жыл бұрын
a shovel hook is arguably the most powerful punch when thrown properly. Not like a "wolverine claw" - a hook should never travel in a straight line. But like a mix between an uppercut and a hook. the centrifugal force on a punch like that is ridiculous.

Have to say Jab should be S tier and everything else that you put in S should be knocked down to A tier. You can have a bad hook or cross and be a decent fighter as long as your other punches are good. If your jab sucks, you’re not getting very far. Or you can make an SS tier and put jab there. I don’t care. Also spinning back fist is a gimmicky, highly-telegraphed punch that has very little actual use and deserves F tier. It’s basically a Falcon punch in that you really only use it to flex or you get super lucky. Superman should be right next to it, though maybe it gets D tier because it has a niche use in sports, but it’s practically worthless in the streets. If a streetfight goes 30 seconds, it’s long so nobody cares about you faking a leg kick. Now in the 3rd round of an MMA fight when you’ve punished your opponent’s legs and midsection for the previous 10 minutes and are looking to get him to open up his defense for a knockout punch? Sure, throw a Superman. But a niche like that doesn’t get you out of D imo.
