Agree but in a different way, because how I see a footballer's career is by their legacy. Barca fans hated him for how he leave the club, PSG fans boo at him almost every game until he score or assist, his main legacy when he retired will be Brazil's top goal scorer which might be broken in next 10 years, what's his legacy after that? Being the 3rd best player in MSN. I get Lewis's point but he can't make a good argument. Also I think he has the best list, how did Tom get away with this, the comment section is the reason why Tom is getting worse and worse in the show, pamper his awful ball knowledge too much because he is not a current EPL club's fan, his ball knowledge I would argue is the 3rd best but this list is just complete shit.

I dont think Gerrard did "waste" anything, People need to stop believe top football players compare themself, I dont think Gerrard gives a f*ck about how many titles Anderson got. I get the notion that "He could have won more in a better team", but why isnt it better to be recognied as one of the greats? Andersons potential was higher than Gerrards, Gerrard basically cared more and undisputably become the better player that everyone will remember. I really struggle to see that as "wasting a career".

how does theo not understand the difference between potential and career? gerrard fulfilled his potential in terms of his personal ability, but his career was fairly wasted because he could have won more. anderson on the other hand didn’t waste his career because he won multiple prems, champs league and played for man united, but his potential was wasted because he won golden ball and never lived up to his expectations when it comes to personal ability. Theo doesn’t just have no ball knowledge, he lacks basic knowledge
@davidjakobs4948

Mate winning trophies as a subsitute (with no minutes played) does not constitute to your career not being a waste. By that logic Bojan Krkic has had less of a wasted career than Shearer, Kane, Gerrard, Lampard, Drogba, etc. You career is wasted if you didn‘t live up to your ability (rather than potential) because of poor career choices. Anderson isn‘t a wasted career because IMO he was never actually good, he was just extremely overhyped because he was a Brazilian that played for Utd. Had he have played for West Ham instead he wouldn‘t have even received 1/10th of the attention. Hence, why I don‘t believe he is a wasted talent. Gerrard, on the other hand, completely lived up to his ability and had a long and successful career. He‘s Liverpools greatest ever player FFS and he‘s only won 1 UCL and hasn‘t won a single League title. To put that into perspective, Liverpool 19 league titles and 6 UCL‘s and he has only contributed to ONE of those titles, yet he is still their GOAT. Do you know how absurd that is? Yet somehow he wasted his career. Could he have left for some other club and won more trophies? YES. But he‘d likely not be regarded as a legend for either club then, he‘d leave no legacy behind. By staying at Liverpool he has enjured he‘ll be remembered forever. The same can be said about Totti. He never left his boyhood club and in turn the man is revered as a GOD in Rome. So did he waste his career, because he could have moved to Real but decided to stay loyal? No, and I bet you he doesn‘t regret his choice one bit. Or what about Maradona? Maradona easily could have gone to Madrid or Milan or any club in the world but he decided to join a shitty Napoli side and carried them to glory by himself. Did he sacrifice trophies doing so? Yes. Was it a wasted career? Fuck no, the guy is arguably the GOAT. Just because you didn‘t maximize on winning trophies that does not mean you wasted your career.
@buffcorrellfan738

@@davidjakobs4948just because he was liverpool's best player ever does not instantly mean you did not waste your career. I guess you value loyalty over everything else but I value winning trophies way more, ideally with the same club but if Kane stayed at tottenham his whole career nobody is gonna say wow hes so loyal i respect him, ppl are gonna say what a waste, he deserves a trophy and should have left, even tottenham fans felt bad for him and understood that he left. Gerrard is in the same league as lampard, scholes, keane, KDB in terms of footballing ability. But his accolades are shit in comparison to the other 4. When you enter that level of being considered the top 5 prem midfielders of all time, a european trophy and multiple league titles are expected of you. One UCL and a few FAs cup is simply not enough. He deserved way more trophies and should have gotten them, hence wasted career. Imagine if messi played the exact same way he did throughout his career, had the same stats and stayed with barcelona for most of his career but never won a single trophy. Not one. The best player to touch the ball did not win a single trophy, are you gonna say he didnt waste his career cause hes a club legend and had amazing stats? of course not cause he deserves trophies. The same logic is applied to gerrard, for his calibre one UCL is not enough.

@@Damian-wr6bz yeah i think it entirely depends what you value most. In the end roma fans value totti the most and dont think he wasted his career. However, he would be more renowned and more successful by everyone else if he moved around and won titles, champions league and other trophies. The highlight of his career is his loyalty not the fact he won anything cause he pretty much didnt. To me that is a wasted career but to a roma fan definitely not. Only your team fans will remember you if youre loyal to a team that isnt good enough to win anything but everyone will rmbr you if you moved arnd and won multiple titles, i think being loyal is overrated

@@sammyquadrosit’s not about that tho, for example someone like Wes Morgan who was so average won a prem and that is an incredible career for his standards, Neymar for how good he was, winning just one CL and only two league titles in a top league isn’t enough compared to what he could’ve and should’ve achieved. No one seems to mention that he also barely played 50% of the games in most Ligue 1 seasons. If someone wins the prem whilst playing less than 50% of the games, people won’t give too much credit to that player. Wasted career all depends on what you achieve relative to your ability. As someone else said, the top 3 players in the world were Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar, EVERYONE expected Neymar to win a ballon d’or at some point when Messi and Ronaldo dropped off a bit, worse players managed to do that being older than Neymar is now and he’s now in Saudi. If you told someone 10 years ago that he would win nothing for brazil except the olympics, NEVER play in a wc semi final, finish in the top 3 of the ballon dor just twice, and have one of the most dissapointing international careers they would absolutely consider that a wasted career given his potential. And french league titles mean absolutely nothing, they bought him for one reason only to win the UCL and they got dumped out almost every year in the last 16. Same thing for me. Nobody doubts what he did for Barcelona and Santos and what he won with them, but because of that and because of the amazing quality that he had the expectations for him were to be just a level below what Ronaldo and Messi where, which is to win several big titles, win Baloon D´or and be the main man in a team that wins the UCL, he himself hinted that he needed to leave Barça to get out of Messi´s shadow. He did not achieve that, he had the quality for it, so it is for me a wasted career.

I agree on the Neymar take. He will still go down as one of Brazils greats, obviously, and I respect the attempt of doing his own thing at PSG. That being said I think he would've been a more legendary players if he either stayed at Barca or moved to any club that isn't PSG. Let's be real, he wasn't overshadowed by Messi, at least not by that much. Everyone knew what a brilliant players he was. Barca would've probably been more stable between 2015 and 2020 because they wouldn't have bought flops like Coutinho or Dembele since they didn't need to replace Neymar and him and Messi with a stable Barca team could've easily won another CL or two. All speculation of course but his move to PSG did him no favor when it comes to legacy. 10 or 20 years down the line nobody will talk about Neymars career at PSG. Also Messi and Ronaldo weren't even the main competition of Neymar for the Ballon d'Or in the last couple of years anymore. When it was his time, he was outdone by Modric, Lewandowski and Benzema, all of which were never considered to be future Ballon d'Or winners like Neymar was 10 years ago.

tbf i think messi still would've won the ballon dors that he did even if neymar stayed in barca and won 2 or 3 more ucls with them. looking at that 2019 ballon dor win, neymar hasn't had a season like that messi season ever and would've been outshone by him anyway. 2023 was world cup year and argentina winning the wc would've gave messi the ballon dor anyway. 2021 was the year that you could definitely argue against messi, but then barca winning the ucl would've just given messi an even bigger chance to win the ballon dor because he would have that copa america over neymar. then the years messi didn't win, 2018 was also a world cup year and assuming barca wins the ucl that season, messi probably wins the ballon dor that year as well if neymar doesn't have more goals. 2020 covid no ballon dor. 2022 benzema was the only exception and the only reason benzema won that ballon dor was due to madrid's ridiculous ucl run, so if barca stops madrid from winning, then maybe if neymar scores more than messi? like the only realistic chance would be the 2022 ballon dor if neymar carries barca to a ucl, but then that assumes he would take over from messi in barcelona and messi would start playing support for him and another fast striker up top. it definitely could happen as messi started playing deeper in psg as well and relied on neymar and mbappe as outlets for goals but then you are assuming neymar would be lethal enough last an entire season scoring a boatload of goals. so basically the only way for neymar to win the ballon dor would be for him to be in his 2022/23 season pre-world cup form for the entirety of the 2021/22 season and beat real madrid to the ucl that year. you can defnitely argue for, let's say, this season if he was to still play for barcelona considering neymar is still 32 and messi's basically semi-retired with every other club in europe looking shaky right now, but otherwise, he wouldn't really have a chance.

If he had stayed at Barca, he might've won 10 la ligas, more champions leagues. imagine if MSN could go up against that unreal Madrid team and battle for the champions leagues those years English clubs and Bayern were terrible. The borders/everything taken into account for the list are : - how they done in their career - the possibilities of where they could've gone - their ability at their peak - loyalty won't always be credited - players whom had peaked towards the latter stages don't really count on the basis that bigger clubs wouldnt spend. 10. Harry Kane (the reason he's number 10 is on the basis he could possibly now more than ever win a trophy or some form of silverware than add to his status as one of the best strikers in modern football and one of the more complete players we've seen.) 9. Dimitri Payet (Controversial opinion however, he easily had one of the most entertaining individual seasons in the modern Premier League era. He then was homesick, left back to Marseille and never really was the same phenomenon we once witnessed in the Premier League.) 8. Phillipe Coutinho (at one point of the best Brazilian talents in the world at the time and the driving force of Liverpool's team when everything wasn't going right. The catalyst and the player who happened to be the domino to start the Liverpool Era with the move to Barca which proved to be a mistake. ) 7. Paul Pogba (one of the most polarizing characters in football, at the peak defensively solid and a multi mixed of a 8 and 10 with hints of a 6. Moved to united and never really could fit into a club with a lot of turmoil.) 6. Fernando Torres (sacrificed his career as one of the deadliest strikers to become a World Cup Winner. Aggrevated injuries in all fairness killed his career sooner than what we had hoped for El Nino. And was rushed to come back when it was obvious he wasn't at his best.) 5. Oscar (was apart of that Confederations Cup 2013 Brazil team as well, with Phillipe Coutinho and Neymar. Was compared to the likes of Kaka but because of the dying role of a Number 10, was never really able to adjust to the international stage post 2015 and moved to China and is still there.) 4. Marco Reus (easily one of my favorite players I've ever gotten to watch as a child and now adult. sad that he never got to reach to the heights of world cup champions. he's body couldnt, injury prone but when not injured was easily one of the best players in Bundesliga. Loyalty killed his career as well. Had the opportunity of moving to a bigger club like Barca or Bayern but chose the club that chose him.) 3. Francisco Totti (a club legend. The poster boy for the giallorossi. Through and through bled the orange and red. He was never a gun man, the false 9. Loyalty made his career but Roma fans wouldve allowed him to leave and come back. Roma fans are understanding and probably the most loving fanbases I've ever seen. I wanted Totti as one of the first names people throw in for best players we've ever seen. He gave everything to Roma, sad that he wasn't rewarded as much as he should've. 2. Steven Gerrard (same with Totti, and Marco Reus. The Liverpool man. Loyalty is amazing but sometimes you're forced to do uncomfortable things for the greater good of your career. Henry did it to win the champions league. So if Gerrard would've done it for a trophy he shouldn't be criticized but commemorated. Leaving for a better club to come back with a mentality of winning everything motivates and cultivates a team to a brand new level and Gerrard could've done that. That would've killed the conversation on who's better between Scholsey, Lampard and Gerrard or at least, make it purely Gerrard and Scholes because of trophies. 1. Neymar Junior (easily the most polarizing character in football. the whole PSG situation has caused such a stain on his career as a whole. The off the pitch antics. the playing style which he plays is viewed as risky and wild. players are not really allowed to express themselves. The football which neymar plays makes it obvious that he would get tackled on a regular basis. He was even quoted as saying "I dive in order not to get an injury". The move to PSG to step out of Messi's shadow is understandable, however the price is still so ubsurd to me. I could go on for hours on what could've should've and would've done but it's done. And I appreciate for neymar blessing us with his football style which became a dying breed.)

I'm not mad at the shout Reev made about Gerrard wasting his career. I will say that Stevie G was a phenomenal player, helping Liverpool win the Champions League in 05, and winning them 2 FA cups and 3 League cups. However, he never won a league, despite the massive amount of talent that he had. If he had gone to a Chelsea, when Jose Mourinho was there, or to Man United, with Alex Ferguson, then he would have had more league success. Theo saying that because he's a club legend he should get a pass is a disingenuous argument. Heck, Paolo Di Canio is a legend at my club, West Ham, and he got us into the Europa League when we were a club that wasn't even worthy of being in that competition. But I wouldn't say that he didn't waste his career. I know that it's not an exact comparison, because Di Canio was not on the level of Gerrard, but saying that he's above criticism because he is a club legend is wild.

There's a video about Neymar titled "The prince who never became King", I think you lot should watch it. It perfectly explains how Neymar wasted his career. You could easily use the Gerrard explanation for Neymar as well - did this, did that, but should've done a lot more, that's what a wasted career means and Neymar was supposed to rival Messi and Ronaldo, but never even got close to it. Left Barcelona cause he was being shadowed by Messi and ended up being shadowed by Mbappe. If Mbappe ends his career at PSG winning 25 titles, that would be seen as a wasted career, because he's supposed to achieve much more.

as a Brazilian, I cannot disagree with Lewis on the Neymar argument. Neymar is perceived as a loser in Brazil. His only accolades for the Seleção were the Olympic Gold and the Confederations Cup (which doesn't even bloody exist anymore). We won the Copa America he didn't play in, the next time he played, we lost to Argentina (Messi's first ever international trophy). Was a worldwide joke in the 2018 World Cup for his diving. The closest he came to becoming a hero was the Croatia goal, which we all know how it all ended. Don't get me wrong, I fully know he isn't at fault for his career not being as good as it could've been. So so many injuries ruined his potential success. In 2014, he got snapped by Zuñiga and let down in the 2020 UCL final, when the entirety of Brazil was rooting for him, he was also always so unlucky. For me, ending his career with that single UCL with MSN and a bunch of nothing league titles with PSG (many of which he spent most time injured for) simply aren't enough for Brazil's biggest talent since Ronaldinho. His most successful stint will always be Santos to me

What a massive contradiction to have Gerrard here for not moving from Liverpool (where he won trophies) to go to Chelsea. But have Torres on the list for leaving Liverpool (where he won nothing) to go to Chelsea and win the biggest trophy in club football, as well as others.

He fulfilled his potential and more, but should have won way more than what he did. It’s a team sport, I know. But Gerrard could’ve experienced what Bellingham is now but with Zidane along side him, we could’ve succeeded in international tournaments as he would’ve known how to play alongside Lampard, could’ve won the treble with Inter, the list goes on.
